i have a pair of gliders who are very social, friendly, loving, etc.. one in particular, marley, is so special to me.

i found her tonight dead. i held her and cried for a good hour, and then.. she moved her head. and then her front feet.. he back feet were paralyzed for another hour or so. right now she is crawling all over me.

but her jaw is paralyzed i think.. she grabs food and just moves her face around on it. her bottom lip is all limp and hanging all over the place. she also seems to be blind now. she comes to me when i call her name but she is a bit wobbly still.

what happened to her??? i feel so bad.. she cant eat. i think the only thing i can do is uethenize her tomorrow :*( but it makes me so sad.. she came back to life while i cried and said her name..

please help...any info...i dont think she'll make it through the night without food/water

okay i did the skin pull test and she is very dehydrated..
i attempted to feed her some juice and miraculously her jaw works now! right now she is eating some cheese..seems to be doing a bit better. is there anything else i can do? she wont drink water, only juice for now so i will try and give her some more before i get some rest.

wish us luck

The only thing I can think of is that she had some kind of siezure. When my dog has them (from epilepsy) she can't move right for a while. With her being so much smaller it just may have had a more profound affect on her. I would definately take her to the vet for a check but it sounds like she pulled through it ok. Try mixing a little water in with the juice for extra hydration. Keep us posted! I'll keep her in my prayers.

[:"green"]Oh my goodness... Try giving her Pedialyte or Liquilyte if you have it or can get it... Apple flavor is best for gliders. If you don't have either one of those, try a bit of Gatorade... You need to get her rehydrated as quickly as possible. Then, get her in to the vet ASAP so he/she can give her sub-cutaneous fluids. Also, have her calcium level checked - make sure she isn't getting hind leg paralysis from hypocalcemia. If she is, they can give you a special supplement to give her to try to reverse it (I had to do this with my Uromastyx lizard and it was quite successful) - I've heard of some success with gliders for this too.
Good luck & I'll be praying for you & Marley...

[:"green"]I forgot to mention that I have given my glider joeys Pedialyte & Liquilyte before for dehydration. My vet told me it is a good home-remedy for rehydrating little ones. It does need to be given along with water - mix it half & half...

What I recommend until you can get her into a vet asap, is to force food/fluids with a syringe (no needle) or an eyedropper. Place as far back as possible. Pedialyte 50/50 with water, diluted gliderade, juice, anything. If you use BML, or have Ensure, either of those can go down by syringe, also. Keep her as warm as possible, preferably on you, either in a pouch under your shirt/jacket, or just in your shirt/jacket if she likes that better. If there's any way to get into a 24 hour emergency vet for sub-q fluids, fecals and UA, I would recommend it, though I understand sometimes one just isn't available. In that case I'd go to your regular vet 1st thing when they open, no appt, as an emergency-most won't turn you away with a critical animal. Praying for your little one!!

Should add, probably about .5 (1/2) CC every hour or so on the force feedings. Their tummies aren't very big, and you don't want it coming back up.

thank you everyone for all the suggestions and concern.

i was gone for the night last night, but she was doing pretty well before i left. she is still a bit slow, i think her sight still isnt all the way there..but everything on her seems to be working adequately.
she is sleeping now..i will check on her again in a few hours when she is awake and give another update.

i am going to try and get her to the vet within the next day or two.

thanks so much once again, everyone!

im hoping its not diet related and you got her on a good diet like the bourbons leadbeaters diet plan. it has saved many gliders from alot of bad diets out there, ive seen the results firsthand with my glider since shes been on it. but, you shouldnt wait for vet care. if you are careful and bundle her in your shirt so she dont get in the least bit cold park in front of a vet and run in and have him run a direct fecal float and urinalysis let her pee in a plastic kritter keeper or plastic something and just empty it into a cup or vial let the vet ck it for any UTI infection if he thinks he need s to have her x rayed for anyreason. the safest anestesia is isoflurin. gliders hide their illnesses and the quicker u go to a vet the better of a chance she will have but please dont put this off its crucial u bring her in and not wait anylonger so she can get the proper treatment to make her well again.

she is gone...

her mate, cooper, is very healthy..but i do not want him alone for any longer than he already has been. if there is anyone in the MN area that would take him in, where he can be social with another glider(s) please let me know.

I'm so sorry you lost your little girl. You may want to have Cooper checked by the vet, and/or a necropsy on Marley to find out exactly what happened, and if the other glider is at risk. You wouldn't want to send him to a new home without knowing if he was ill also, if whatever this was was possibly contagious.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss of Marley. She'll be at the rainbow bridge.

Hi Marley, sorry for your loss. Why not just get another friend for Cooper? I'm sure you would be happier getting another baby then giving away the one you already have.

hey everyone - thank you for all the support. i am still so sad.. i miss her a lot.

i would get another glider to keep cooper company, but i work full time and am in the process of looking for a new apartment - most of which do not allow pets. i am just trying to be as selfless as i can be, and find cooper a home where he can getr ALL the attention he deserves.

OMG I'm so sorry for your loss, Marley. You will definitely be in my prayers. Your sweetheart was a fighter and is definitely waiting for you on the other side. I'm certain she knew how much you cared for her. Keep strong and we are all here to support you in this time of tragedy.
