It is so difficult for me to post this as I'm sitting here crying so hard I can barely type. I just went to check on my gliders & found Tyler hanging lifeless by his left front foot from the top of a hanging sleeping pouch I had put in two days ago for him, his mate & baby to use. Somehow one of Tyler's nails got caught in the fannel fabric at the top of the pouch opening & he couldn't get loose. I don't know how it could have happened. I just clipped his nails last week and had checked them last night when he came out to eat and his nails were fine. I also checked on my gliders this morning at 6:30 A.M. & nothing was amiss. All gliders were asleep in their pouches. Sometime after 6:30 A.M., Tyler must have tried to crawl out & gotten his nail caught. He never crabbed or barked to let me know anything was wrong.

I feel so horrible that my first precious glider is gone. He had such a special place in my heart. As a rescue who had not been handled the first year of his life, it took me almost 1 1/2 years to gain his trust but when I did, it was the happiest day of my life. Then he went through a bout of lumpy jaw with secondary systemic abscessing necessitating a partial tail amputation due to loss of circulation in the lower half of his tail. It took him almost four months to recover but recover he did as he had the heart & spirit to live.

Somehow, I feel that I have betrayed the trust that Tyler gave to me. This was the first time I have ever used a hanging sleeping pouch & to have it end so tragically for Tyler is more than I can bear. I will never again use a hanging sleeping pouch for any glider I have.

I will miss you so much Tyler as you were my first glider & taught me what true love and patience are all about. I know you are in a wonderful place across the Rainbow Bridge watching over us and that Tia, Piper & I will see you again one day but even knowing that does not ease the pain and ache in our hearts that we are feeling right now over your loss.

Glideroo, I am sooooo sorry for your loss I know that no matter what anyone says it will not ease the pain and guilt you must be feeling. I have not lost a glider but I have recently experienced the loss of a friend that was truly close to me. Just take comfort knowing that you gave Tyler the best and because of you he DID love and trust and knew that feeling while here with you. What an awful loss that would have been for him if he had not ever felt that! We're sending lots of glider hugs and prayers to you and the remaining crew.

I'm so sorry you lost your baby. It seems there has been a lot of loss lately. This isn't your fault though. Lots and lots of people use the pouches with great sucess. You couldn't have known it was going to happen like this.
You have proven you loved him and cared, for one thing simply by having the patience to bond with him when he was so scared and so resistant. He KNEW you loved him. He wouldn't blame you and neither should you. I'm soo sooooo sorry for your loss. Prayers and hugs coming your way.

I am so sorry about Tyler. I know the hole losing a beloved pet can leave. Sending glider hugs and prayers for healing and peace. You had no way of preventing this, you checked on them frequently, you did ALL you could! That is all any of us can do. Sometimes, they're needed in heaven before we are ready to let them go.

Oh, Lois, there are no words to express how sad I am about Tyler. I know how very, very much you loved him, and I know he knew that, too. He was a special glider with a unique place in your heart. I am SO sorry.

I want to thank everyone who has offered their condolences. Tyler was indeed a very special glider & will never be forgotten. I know it may sound morbid but I wanted to be sure his mate Tia and their joey, Piper were aware that he was gone so I laid him gently inside their regular sleeping pouch & watched as Tia came up, sniffed/touched Tyler & then walked away to the back of the pouch. Then Piper came up to sniff/touch her daddy, turned and went to the back of the pouch and curled up next to her mom. It was so sad & yet at the same time wonderful to see them say a final goodbye to Tyler.

Glideroo--I do not think it was morbid. I think what you did brought closure to mommy and the baby and they are probably glad to know what has happened than not know. Plus, Tyler's life will go on in the joey because he has prodginy to carry on his genes. That alone should bring you some comfort. I think that was a very fitting tribute to Tyler! Humans do it all the time--so why not gliders? They got to pay their last respects and I agree with your decision to do this and do not think anyone in our forum would take offense to that tribute! May God Bless You and give you strength.

Lois,
I am so sorry to read of your loss. I know how much Tyler was loved by you and how special he was to you. I know he will always hold a very special place in your heart. I will always remember that very adorable picture of him munching on a cricket that you have on your website...that is how tyler should be remembered I do not think it is morbid that you allowed his family to say goodbye. I have done that with several of my gliders who have lost their loved one. I do believe it does them some good to know what has happened rather than think that they were just taken away from them.
Know that Tyler has some wonderful company to play with over that rainbow bridge.
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your glider family during your time of loss.

oooohhh Glideroo, The wake you gave for Tyler was VERY touching I got a visual and started to cry...unfortunately I'm at work otherwise I'd still be bawling...That hass got to be THE sweetest tribute anyone can giv their glider and remaining family I know that Tyler really appreciated all you have done for him and his family after his passing...And you think you're awful????? How can you even think that with such tenderness and care you exhibit during the most devastating time....You are a very strong, and caring glider mom...

Words cannot express the sorrow in my heart for you. I will miss Tyler as well. But he will live on in your heart and in his family. His life had come full circle. May God comfort you now and help heal your broken heart.

Glideroo--There is one thing worth mentioning that may help you work through some of your grief. There is a Memorial Section at the bottom of the page where members can post a fitting tribute to their deceased gliders. That way their story can live on and you can recall the good memories that you shared with Tyler.

Again I want to thank everyone who has expressed their condolences on Tyler's passing. I buried Tyler beneath a tree in the back yard after wrapping him in one of his favorite blankies.

It's still so hard for me to believe my special boy is gone & I continue to find myself crying on and off without warning. While I know the board has a Memorial Section, I have chosen to put up a special Memorial Page for Tyler on his website. I hope some of you will stop by to check it out & perhaps sign the guestbook to honor his memory. Please be patient as it may take a bit for the page to load:

Glideroo,
The wake you had for Tia and Piper to say their final goodbye to Tyler has really hit home for me. I am crying right now, as I had done the same thing with my little Levi. Levi's parents, Harley and Angel and sister Dixie sniffed the body of Levi and went back in their pouch. Angel, on the other hand, was circling the ceiling of the cage like crazy, looking for her baby. I felt so bad for her but I knew time would only heal.
You are not the only one who is in this ordeal. There are many others who share this with you, including me. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Like I said, it had hit home with me.

ok i use hanging pouches - how did he die from just getting his nail caught? Couldn't he have just sat there or somthing? Anywho, I am very very sorry about Tyler and I havnt lost any gliders but I lost my kitten (she was an adult so cat) and that was so hard for me but the gliders comforted me through it. Kiko (the kitty) slept with me every night and i just loved him so much. I feel so sorry for you. My gliders and I will keep Tyler, you, and the other gliders in thought + prayer. best of wishes. How is the other 2 gliders coping with this????

there is a statue outside the scottish rites children's hospital in dallas that is inscribed,
"TO LIVE IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WE LOVE IS NOT TO DIE." animals aren't children, but love IS love.

tyler lives in your heart now ...

peace in your grief.
