I am in the process of planning out a new cage for my babies. I want the cage to be 5-6 foot tall and plan for the front to open like a side by side frig (bad analogy but couldn't think of anything else). My question is has anyone done this and is it wise for me to put a smaller door into the big door just in case?? Hope this makes sense. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />
Also has anyone used the hexagonal mesh from Klubertanz?? If so do you need a frame with it or is it strong enough without? With their other vinyl wire does it need a frame? Thanks for any advice!!!
I am also thinking of putting a door inside a door for a cage. It is a good idea. I would do it, since it will be there if you need it and if you dont it wont cause any harm.
I ordered cage supplies through the same company, but it wasn't the hexagon. my cage is 2'x2'x5' tall it's huge...well at least to me since i'm 5'1". I love the cage. It is kind of like a ferret cage in the way that it has levels w/ ladders around the perimeter working its way up, and then at the top it is a little more open w/ diagnal shelves. My boyfriend and I made it 2 years ago and only spent $75 on supplies and shipping. It is perfect, one like that I figure on other ones would be around $300-$400. There are hammocks and w/ the extra wire we made a little loop that is covered w/ vines. We just used zip ties (a lot of them) and that is basically the framework. I think that you will really love the equiptment from that company...I sure did. I will never get rid of the cage, it took almost a whole day to cut and make. It was hard work. We almost got boxed inside while working on it and stuck inside.
[:"blue"] The hexagonal wire that is sold by Klubertanz is not strong enough to be self supporting in a cage of the size that you are proposing. If you use that wire, you will need to build a frame. Also be careful, because Klubertanz sells coated and uncoated wire. You need to be sure you order the vinyl coated wire. [/]
<<<<<red face>>> I was thinking so hard about the gauge and the coating issues that the mesh size never even entered my head. NO....that wire will NOT do!!! The catalog says the wire has a 1" mesh which is way too big for gliders. Sorry!![/]
[:"blue"] The Klubertanz wire that most people use is the 16 gauge 1/2"x1" vinyl coated wire. It is pretty stiff and will make a 5 or 6 foot tall cage without needing a frame unless you plan for a very large footprint. What dimensions are you considering for your cage?? [/]
Also I think I remember people saying they will cut it for you if you give them dimensions, can they also give price estimates if I were to call?? Will they cut a door too?

[:"blue"] Call Richard Klubertanz at 1-800-237-3899. Yes, he will do all of the above.
I have never made a cage that big with the Klubertanz wire so I can't say for sure. The 16 gauge wire is pretty stiff; but the front of your cage is going to be an unsupported 6'x6' and that will be a little "floppy." Since you want to put a couple of big doors in the front of the cage, I expect that you will need some structure to support the weight of the doors. There some construction tricks that you could use to stiffen up the cage and allow it to carry some big doors; but my guess is that the best solution would be a frame to create the basic structure of the cage. Here is a link to a cage photo in the GC gallery. If you haven't viewed the gallery yet, you should do so. You will get a lot of good ideas!!!
That's an awfully big cage for a normal residential environment. If you can accommodate such a cage, that would be great for your gliders. But you should be sure it will fit through doorways and any places that you might have to move it!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinkerg.gif" alt="" /> [/]
