I was told that gliders are illegal in GA, then I spoke to a vet in GA who treats gliders. . . . she told me that I would have to get a license from DNR for the glider. I am afraid to call DNR- what if the vet is wrong and they try to take my glider, what if they just tell me "no" and I can't get a license- they will know I have a glider and may take her. What should I do?

yea.. dont mention that you HAVE a glider.. just say that someone you know might be moving to the state and has gliders and wants to know what you need in order to keep them.
usually, if they require a license, you need to have an educational, or research reason for having them.. like if you worked at a zoo, or was doing a research project that was governement appointed and required sugar gliders.
I know that there is one person in california who is a wildlife educator and works with a zoo and she has a sugar glider, but she has him as a part of the zoo,,

If I am right - You can breed gliders in GA, but you cannot sell them to a resident of GA.

Rhapsody, sugar gliders are totally illegal in GA, to own or to breed. I thought I read some where that you could breed, but not sale them to state residents in GA and PA. I will see if I can find the article..... if not - oh well, NP with being wrong - she can always call about it still.

You can't breed in PA without a permit, either. And, to the best of my knowledge, they are not handing out permits--so technically, no gliders are currently permitted or legal there. My guess, if that's what you read for GA, it's more than likely the same stipulation. I believe in CA, you can get a permit for educational purposes. However, it's more complex then that--you can't just go to your child's classroom and have a quick presentation on gliders. I believe you have to have an actual business type deal, like an actual business structure with supervisors or CEOs, tax filings, etc

According to the first link marsupials are illegal to own. In the same link the way it's worded your average pet owner will not be able to get a license.
And we could argue until we are blue in the face that a sugar glider is not going to seriously injure a human, but the government most likely will not change anything.

Yeah - I am not for sure..... and the links I provided are not the exact one I was talking about - but I had them on my list and thought they might help the person that is asking questions. ... my husband even remembers us reading it some where that you could breed SG in two certain states, but you could not sale them to the residents of that state. (weird but the truth)

Debate, clarification, same thing. It always turns out the same. No one is ever 100% clear on what the guidelines are for illegal states. Yes you need a permit, no you don't need a permit, blah, blah, blah. It's the same old thing.
If the DNR or the PA Game Commission don't even know their own laws, how is the average person supposed to know them? Call four different game reps and you get four different answers!
All I know is, I live in SC, close to the GA line and we rescue gliders OUT of GA, not import them in......

Shelle is right...this question pops up every few months about GA, PA, CA, etc and has been for years. The laws aren't going to change. There are permits that can be attained, but they either aren't handing them out or they are extremely difficult to attain, thus making it impossible to legally own gliders in an illegal state.

I am from Georgia. We lived in Alpharetta which is about 35 miles NE of Atlanta. I was never allowed to have gliders at all. They are really strict around there and dont allow them AT ALL. I checked with every place I could think of. They said the only way you could get a license to have them is if I was a member of management (at least) at a zoo or something like that. There was NO way to keep them in a personal residence. I know that stinks. One day, gliders will be recognized for the awesome animals they are. You could always push to get them legalized. I started asking around. One of the reps from the USDA said "Honestly, it just hasnt been brought to the right persons attention that someone wants it to be legal." She said no one had ever tried to push them to be legalized. Which I think its one of those "outta sight, outta mind" sort of things. Who knows, maybe you could get that started. She also said that since they are divided into counties that act almost like a commonwelth, you would have to tackle it one county at a time, then the rest of the counties would "jump on the bandwagon" so to speak. I hope that helps. I just learned alot being around there and fighting to get them. Thank God I moved here to Texas, a completely legal state!! WHOOOO HOOO! OK, so I'm just a little hyper, too much starbucks on my flight to here.

i heard that they are completely legal. but on the other hand they are legal to have if you are driving through the state to get into florida. and you have 24 hours to get through the state with the glider before you can get in trouble. but honestly how would they find out if you were there 10 minutes to 4 days...? also how does the state find out you own a glider? unless you have a neighbor whose a jerk and tattles on you or the state sees a cage, pouches etc. being sent to your house after they were spying on you. then how would they know?

doitall48- how did you go about getting a RX from your dr. for "therapy animals"? I have a friend who did that with her cat- she is on anti-depressants and the basically told the dr. she can't live without her cat. . . is that what you did?
suggiemom- where do you live in relation to Savannah? If I would happen to have any trouble with DNR- which I doubt I will- could I make a quick trip and have you keep her until I can get her to my parents in MO? I really don't think that anyone is going to turn me in, most people don't even know what she is!

My husband will be transferred to GA in about a year. I started looking into suggie laws as soon as I find out.
I called their Fish and Wildlife board to inquire about licensing and was told there was *none* available.
Luckily he will be stationed not far from the Florida border, where you can own them, and we will look for houses there. I am by no means getting rid of my gliders because of someone elses ignorance!

unless you are a breeder and willing to become a zoo is the only way I was told it could happen.
