I just found my glider Layla trapped in the lining of her sleeping pouch. She is dehydrated not moving very much, cold, but responsive. I have given her 2.5 cc of D5 subcutaneously. I am warming her with microwaved rice (dry rice in a zip lock bag and trying to orally rehydrate her. We are having an ice storm here, so I can't carry her to a vet. I need advice. How much fluid can I give her before I fluid overload her? And what else can I do. She will not take anything by mouth.

I have given her an additional 1.5 cc of D 5 due to no change in her neuro status. There was band of cotton batton restricting her lower abdomen above her hind legs...I cannot assertain the extent of her injuries due to her neuro status. Her respiratory status is stable at the moment.

I have given her a total of 5cc of D5 over the course of an hour with little response. She is deteriating now she is taking gasping breaths. I am going to become more agressive with the fluids. I need help. Sje is actively dying and I refuse to let that happen without a fight.

Ohhhhh, how sad and I am so sorry your little glider did not make it.

Sub-q fluids are admin by the weight of your glider. With an adult glider...I usually do not give more than 3 cc's and do not inject any more for several hours.

The loss of your glider more than likely was from the string having been tightly bound around her middle causing an internal injury.

May time heal your pain.

May time

How often does this happen to gliders? Were they preventable deaths?

Oh I feel so sad when this happens to someone's gliders. You always think it won't happen to me then we hear of another one or 2 . That is so so heartbreaking. I am sorry noone has answered your question.

Most gliders don't display sypmtoms of illness until they are really really sick. And sometimes they show no symptoms you just find them.

Also, there are "diggers" that love to dig to the bottom of the pouch and crawl under. I always keep blankets in the bottom of my pouches so they crawl under the blankets.

I am sorry for you loss. I know how painful it is.

Becoming trapped under or between a pouch isn't really being sick. I was curious to why these things happen and if they can be prevented so gliders don't have to have such an untimely death.

crittermom and your daughter and sugartails-I'm so sorry for your losses, I know it's hard to lose a beloved pet

Gliderwoman, it can most likely be prevented by checking your pouches often and making sure there are no loose strings or holes.

Pouch accidents happen more than we realize. Probley only second to drowning in the toilet.

Most are from...poor choice of fabric, worn and frayed with stings loose. And lined pouches...one has to check them frequently looking for indications of gliders digging to get between the material. Sherpa lined pouches.... one must watch for wear as this material seems to draw gliders to dig. A blankie or two of just cut fleese will usually prevent a glider from digging as he can snuggle up in the material.

Also, trimming nails helps to keep a glider from being tangled in his pouch. Long nails catch and when a glider is caught....for some reason he will roll....only making his predictment worse. This is something they do in the wild as well when snagged.
