I'll just add my post onto this one since its similar. I'm also looking to get my single male glider, 2 months, a girlfriend but I'm a little worried about how they'll get along. Anyone have experience introducing sugar gliders?

Oh, yes! Been there, done that---twice!

Teri, I would be very hesitant about putting two males together! What I've read on this subject is that there'd be a feud (possibly to the death of one of them) over which one is going to be the alpha male. Possibly the fighting begins when there's a female present? Hopefully Dancing can furnish some more insight on this particular subject---with 12 years' glider experience, there's knowledge far deeper than mine.

On to DrKamchatka's question: I'm guessing that you have a very strong bond to your young male? That will help a lot in reducing the anxiety of your newcomer just by having her watch your interactions.

I'm in the process of introducing one pair of young male joeys to another young male joey(with cage bars in between) and am having delightful results so far! Considering the attitude the 2 fathers have whenever 1 is loose while the other is in the cage, I'm tickled pink! No fighting, no crabbing, just innocent curiosity! I can read the look on their face: "who's this, and why do they look like me?" It's very amusing.

Each of my males have been introduced to a "new" female, because I could tell they were both lonely for the companionship of their own kind. Their reactions were to the new introductions were totally opposite: MoJo and Minka came from the same colony, so their introductions were complete within 24 hours! I had them in separate cages with about 6 inches space between....somehow Minka got out of her cage during the night & was hanging onto MoJo's by the next morning! I opened the door to MoJo's cage & she went right into his sleeping pouch, no crabbing or fighting or anything!

Willy Wonka and Tiger Lilly, on the other hand, took a little more time: He'd lost his mate about a week before, but I knew he needed a new companion. So I went back to my friend where Minka & MoJo came from & got Tiger Lilly. Once again, I put them in separate cages, but this time the cages were much larger & T.L. couldn't get out! I put a sheet over both cages so their "smells" could intermingle & they could see each other. I brought one out of the cage at a time, and let them see the other. After a week of this process, I brought them both out at once. Willy was so happy to be able to get closer to Tiger Lilly, he forgot his manners and started doing "something" she didn't want yet. I explained to him that she was a lady and "proper courting procedures" were required if he wanted her to be his mate, then put him back in his cage. Next night, I tried again: he shyly approached her, started licking her scent gland on her throat, then started toward his own cage. She followed him to the cage entrance, then licked his scent gland. He disappeared into his nestingbox, and she followed him in--no fighting, no crabbing, nothing. I closed the cage door & they've been mates ever since!

Good luck to both of you!

Would it do anything if I got them both neutered?I really want to get him a companion, I know steps on introducing and all that. And I cant find someone that I would LIKE to buy from that has a female.I am really hesitant about it because if they don't get along I will never hear the end of it with my mom, and I am not looking just to get another one, all I want is for my baby to have a friend.thanks

I would like some thoughts on this also. I have a brother sister pair. The male is neutered. I was thinking about getting another male to put with them (when they are older) so I can have some babies.

Another thing to consider about introducing gliders is that you should have a quarantine period for 2 - 4 weeks, to make sure that the new one doesn't have something that the existing glider could get sick from - even if you get a clean bill of health from a vet.

Well, first I want to clear something up. I have not had gliders for 12 years. I have had gliders for about 6 years.

Teri- introducing two adult males has a high chance of NOT working unless they are neutered. After neutering, it takes 6-8 weeks for their hormone levels to drop. So if you were to get a male now and have both neutered, you would need to keep them housed seperately so they can't fight for about 2 months. But during this time, they can have their cages side by side (6 inches apart) so they can chat and get to know each other. During the last two weeks, you might try supervised play time, being prepared to break up any fights (if there are any).

gracieangel--As for putting an intact male with a neutered male and his sister. Not sure about that. The intact male might act aggressive to the neutered male especially if/when there are joeys.
I do have a colony(2 adult males, 1- 4 /12 month old male and 2 adult females and a joey) and the youngest is a 6 week old joey that the hole colony is raising. They all take care of him and he is very well protected and worried about. Colonies can work but the twin sister of the 4 1/2 old male had to be removed from the colony due to her brother getting very mean with her.

DrKamchatka--getting another little glider as a companion for your little one is (in my opinion) a great idea. I would suggest since he is about 2 months old and males reach sexual maturity as early as 5 months, I would get a female that is about 6 months old or older. That way when he is sexually mature, she will be also. An older female would more readly accept a younger male, especially one that has not sexually matured so introductions would probably be pretty easy. Getting a younger female runs the risk of her being bred (sometimes by force) before she is old enough.

As Faieie said. A quarentine period should be used to make sure all gliders are healthy (no contagious infections or parasites)before they are put together.

Hope all this helps. I am far from being an expert. I have only my own experiences to go off of, along with all I have read from other's experiences.
Best of luck!

5 weeks old? Are you sure? Joeys aren't ready to leave their mommies until they are at least 8 weeks old. If he really is that young he will need special care - just like a rejected joey.

And is your male neutered? If not, they will have to remain seperate until she is at least 6 - 8 months old. She won't be ready to mate until then, but the male will "force" her and that could result in injuries or death to either one of your gliders.

Also, don't forget the quarantine period I mentioned.

Again, if she's that young you'll need to give her special care - see the breeding forum for rejected joey care, and consider having a vet check her out and offer suggestions for her care.

Good luck to you!

Dancing, thanks so much for the words of wisdom! Two gliders seem to be a decent number for me. If I were to add one I know it wouldn't be as big of a change as if I were to add two and having separate pairs. Maybe someone will have tried it and/or I can see what happens. I know that gliders are just like people where as they may not get along just because you want them to.

Thanks again!!!!!

I just got a 10 week old female glider(Kaiya) today and I already had about a 15 week female(Shelby) who I am almost completely bonded with. Anyways, I have the new baby in a little cage right next to my other bigger cage for Shelby. Today I had Shelby out and Kaiya was in her cage. Shelby went up to the cage and started climbing on it and smelling inside it and Kaiya quickly climbed up and they started fighting and crabbing on both sides of the cage. I quickly pulled Shelby away and she hid in my hood. It seemed that Kaiya was the one who started it but could it be because she's just very new to her environment? I'm obviously not trying to force a relationship because I know that it takes time, but is there a possibility that they might not like each other? Any ideas? Also, how will I know when they are okay to be in the same cage together?

They are both from the same breeder btw. Shelby is a buttercream and Kaiya is a standard grey.
