This is my first time posting. Sorry if i sound a bit parranoid. I just picked up my first glider about a week ago. I see all everyone on these forums have such great bonds with there gliders. I realize this takes time but im not sure im making very much progress. My glider no longer crabs at me when i try and take her out but she still bites me(not hard). She wont just come to my hand either i have to kind of grab her to get ther out of the cage. I give her mealworms from my hand and stuff but it doesnt seem like the bond is getting very strong. I take her out for at least 4 hours a day(alot of time in a bonding pouch). Also another thing she does is if i am close to the cage she will jump off me onto the cage and go back in. Is this all this normal? How long does a strong bond usually take? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Eric

When you have to "pick up" gliders they really don't like it. I usually kind of "scoop" Damon up and he hops on top of my hand, so he's easy. PMS won't though. Usually I try to get her to go into a bonding pouch and then I put the pouch in the cage. If she hates being grabbed or picked up as much as most gliders do, that could be what is setting you back.

Does she jump back in the cage during the day or the night? If it's day she may just be sleepy and want out of the light.

How old is she?

Does she bite repeatedly or just once or twice when she first sees you? Is it a mean thing, or a "what do you taste like today" thing? Sometimes if your hand soap is scented that can cause it, too.

Good luck, hope some of this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply. She is around 8 months old. She jumps back in both day and night. As for the biting thing goes its not hard or anything but its until i move my hand away from her( i know they say not to but after a few bites it starts to hurt). Im going to try the pouch thing instead of picking her up. How long does a strong bond usually take?

That really depends on the glider. Some bond quicker, some take longer. They all have individual and unique personalities. The more time you spend with her, the "quicker" it will be, allowing for her own personality.
My Riker, who is so bonded to me he talks to me, so far won't accept a cagemate, and gives himself a mohawk if I don't spend an inordinate amount of time with him, will NOT climb on my hand. It may have something to do with the fact that it's one of the areas humans sweat and produce quite a bit of scent. So usually I offer my arm with a long sleeved shirt or jacket, and he climbs right on. When I do want him in my hand, though, I found that holding a clean washcloth or fleece square for him to climb on over the palm and he doesn't have a problem with it that way, and on up my arm he goes.

Depending on how much your glider was handled by people early on, it could take anywhere from a few weeks to many months to bond. I wouldn't be surprised that after just a week he doesn't seem bonded. He's still just settling in. Keep up the good work, and I'm sure you'll both do fine!

Grabbing your glider to get it out if anything is going to really hinder your bond. You said you just got her a week ago. A strong bond takes months, sometimes years. I just got another glider after being without one for over a year, and he has kind of ceased on the biting, but he still crabs non stop. He does allow me to hold him sometimes though. bonding takes time, a lot of time. I imagine my little guy will be a couple months to bond, he was completely wild when I got him. When a glider does bond to you its the most amazing thing in the world. My old glider Taz was awesome, went with me everywhere. But it does take quite a bit of time to get that far. They're kinda like mini people, takes them awhile to decide who they want to be friends with, and how close. I am sure you will do just fine though! Patience is the key. My only advice, stop picking her up. If she wants to play with you, she will come out on her own and climb onto you. This may "suck" and she may not come out on her own for a month, but give her time, and she'll be just fine. Licky treats really help to get them to come out on their own. Even my crazy little guy is starting to come out on his own, a couple times a week. Not every night, but he will come out when he feels like it. Just keep at it!

I have a glider that I raised by hand and she trusts me implicitly. Loves to be inside my shirt. but when it comes to play time she often would rather be in her cage. I will leave the door open and she will run inside and get in her wheel or hang from the top and look out asking for a treat. She is 1.5 years old and a sweety so be patient and let the glider call the shots for a bit there and you will begin to see what her preferences are. I have 5 gliders and all of them are different and loveable in their own way. Have fun!

Well i read that you are supposed to carry them around during the day in a bonding pouch while they sleep. How can i do this if i cant get her out of the sleeping pouch myslelf? She isnt going to come out during the day. Also where can i get these licky treats?

Many people start off by placing their bonding pouch they wish to use in the cage at night. This way you dont have to worry about switching them over to another pouch until after your bonding process has begun on its way.
As for licky treats, you can use many things. BML, Yogurt, baby food ect.

Most of all bonding requires time, patience and consistancy.
But once they are bonded it is well worth every minute invested in it!

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

You can also turn the pouch inside out, with the glider in it - just kind of pull the sides down, while holding her loosely through the fleece - and offer the other pouch to her. If it doesn't smell like her, she might not want it though. Make sure you put blankies that already smell like her in the bonding pouch.

If you put the bonding pouch in the cage, make sure it's glider safe - no drawstrings, or anything.

Oh, and my gliders let me kind of scoop them up out of their pouch. I try not to cover their heads, and keep a very loose grip. They don't like to be held or confined any other time, but this seems to be an exception for them. PMS will crab at me once in a while for disturbing her beauty rest, but as long as I put her in the other pouch she's usually fine with it. hehe
