I awoke this morning and when to get the bowls out of the glider cages, as normal, and noticed that Maddy and Lance hadn't ate a whole lot last night. I want to check on them and they had chewed through the liner of the pouch they were in and were in the "inside" of the pouch (inbetween the liner and the pouch). Luckily, I found them when I did. They were a bit dehydrated but they are now fine. Just another word of caution. We have had alot of pouch incidents lately. i check my pouches regularly but these guys can do damage to a pouch in merely one night. The pouch they chewed through hadn't even been in their cage a week...but luckily I noticed the odd behavior (not eating much) and now they are doing just fine.....

since I am reading all those warnings I am checking my pouches every day. I make sure no strings or anything of this nature is loose.

This is very dangerous. I had no idea that they would chew through the pouch?

Might try using a pouch without a lining...Can always cut fleese to make blankies to the gliders can sort of tunnel safely inside the pouch .

Thanks for the words of advise Judie. All my gliders do have little fleece blankies in their pouches, although most of the time they end up on the cage floor before the night is over. I have a variety of pouches that I use, some are lined, some are not. This particular glider pair I had never had a problem with them chewing before through pouches, etc. HOWEVER, I have one pair that has chewed through EVERY pouch I have placed in their cage within the first two days...sigh. I am just glad that I do check my pouches regularly and noted the odd behavior before it was too late.

I no longer use a pouch. The problem for me was her nails were getting caught in the fleece material. I found her hanging by her foot so I cut the nails which worked fine for a couple weeks till the nails grew back again at which time she once again was found dangling by her foot. If I hadn't spotted her I'm sure she would have broken it or chewed it off trying to free herself.
I now use an enclosure made of plastic.

I have found the chinchilla bath houses to be of good use JAck and Clai loves theirs plus it gives then the extra space for when their joeys come OOp with lots of cut material for blankets in it they love it, RIght now they are using my old tennis skirt from high school to sleep in it has my smell on it at all times , that way even though they are tame and bonded they still stay with my smell weather they are out on me or not . they love it and the other gliders all have ferret hamicks with blankets of MAterial with my smell on the hamicks that they bury them selves in to keep warma dn sleep in

our gliders are just like our 'other children' so just as kids get into trouble, so do our little furries. Therefore, if you use pouches...which I use for all my babies + plant pots and I also make and sell my own window traveler, cup drawstring, cage pouch, and corner hammocks. Make sure that the pouches you buy have NO raw seams that the gliders can start to dig on. And for pouches with liners, check them in the am and also at feeding or play time. If you have a digger, as I have, ( he started when they had their joeys) best to stick to fleece or flannel pouches. With fleece, the seams pretty well hide themselves, but flannel must have hidden seams. These little guys are our responsibility, ans ANY product is only as safe as you make and keep it.
