Hi, I am new to gliders and hopefully will have my own pair of girls in March. I am beyond excited. Hopefully I put this question in the right place.I need to purchase a cage but first need to decide where is best to put it. Originally I planned on my livingroom the problem though is that my 3 parrots are in the living room. They are defenitly not as loud as cockatoos but occasionally they can make a bit of noise. They are actually pretty quiet compared to other parrots. How much noise is too much? Should I put the cage in the bedroom instead? Thanks for any advice

Hey! An Ekkie lover! Me too!
Ok, had to get that out of the way before I answered your question. My advice would be to keep the parrots and gliders in separate rooms if that's possible. There are several reasons I say this. First and foremost, for the glider's safety. If there was a cage escape in the night the curious or brave little glider would likely hop over to see what's in the other cage moving around(if your gliders end up being anything like some of mine) and we all know what could happen if a strong Ekkie or Grey beak struck or bit at a glider. That would be a sad situation. Second, the parrots and their noises and constant movements could or would likely make the gliders very uneasy. In the wild a glider instinctively would stay away from a large bird, so I would imagine it could make for a very nervous little glider. Not to mention we all know how much our gliders need their sleep in the day and the parrots need their sleep at night. Unless it's not at all possible I would think the best thing to do would be to put them in different rooms. Just my two cents. Others may have a different point of view.

It is so nice to see someone with ekkies also has gliders. The more I think about it the more I think the bedroom would be better. BTW your birds are beautiful. Thanks for answering my question

My gliders' cage is in my room about 4 feet from my bed. They are noisy at night, but it helps me sleep better knowing they are having fun. You learn to sleep through the noise. Get a Stealth Wheel and unless they decide to bark that night, you should be all set. And for the barking, bribery usually works to make them be quiet. Good luck!

Someone mentioned gliders saftey. i would worry about bird saftey too. Sorry if this is off topic but I remember reading a story about a person with a huge aviary and the bird always stayed on the bottom and the gliders would always stay close to the top of their cage, so the extremely intelligent person decided to house them all together. The next day there was little left of the poor bird. Better safe then sorry anyway - I would guess different rooms too. Again - sorry if that was off topic.

I find it strange that a bird would be on the ground but guess it depends on the bird. Personally I do not want them interacting at all as safety is my first priority. I didnt consider the possibility of escaping and I defenitly would not want one of them to find her way into one of the birds cages. Thanks for the input

My advice is to definitly keep the birds and SGs separate but I would not recommend putting the SG's cage in your bedroom. I know that some people can sleep through the noise, and for the most part I can too, but mine LOVE barking always about two hours before I need to wake up and they drive me nuts! I'm in a dorm so I cant really move them anywhere else so I just have to deal with it. But that's my two cents.

I wouldn't think that larger parrots like an Eclectus or Grey would be in danger from gliders as much as vice versa. Although, even as large as us humans are, a glider bite or scratch to the eye or a tender area is painful. Smaller birds I'd definitely be more worried about, though. Still....better to keep all birds away from gliders for the safety and sanity of all involved. Better safe than sorry. As for the noise, yep...gliders are quite noisy when they want to be. I have 3 reptariums in my bedroom and I think having them in a rept. makes them a lot less noisy with the addition of the above mentioned Stealth wheels instead of Wodent wheels. I only use one WW and it can be heard all over the house, whereas the Stealth and RPM wheels are almost silent. I'm a very light sleeper and had trouble staying asleep when we first got gliders in our bedroom, but even I can sleep through the noise, now. (except for barking of course) I guess it just took some getting used to. Plus, I like having them nearby for the same reason as mentioned above...paranoid Mommy gets to check on them during the night. BTW, thank you for the compliments on my birds. Yours are beautiful, as well.

I'm in agreement here. Gliders stress out over things you don't even think about. We have two grown cats, and the gliders are completely used to them, Azure in fact plays with them through the cage all the time, with my female anyway, I think they got some jungle love goin' on, LOL. Anyway we brought a little kitten home and she was only there for a couple of weeks but my gliders pretty much pulled out all the hair on their little heads. Something my male never does, my female is just kind of a freak, like me though. It never crossed our minds that the little kitten would stress them out so bad since we already have cats, but she did. Now that's she's gone to her new home their hair is coming back and there haven't been any more signs that they have been pulling it out again.
In your room might be hard, they are certainly loud, and there are nights my gliders just decide to bark all night, but I wouldn't keep them in the same room as the parrots.
