I woke up around 6:30 this morning and heard Kayla barking - I know the sound of her bark. I went in, saw her on the side of her cage, and thought she just wanted to play. But when I opened the cage door, she didn't jump to me like usual. Instead she started biting at the cage bars. I looked closer and realized that her hand was stuck through the bars. When I looked at the outside of the cage, I saw that her entire hand up to her wrist was wrapped in the sheet that hangs on the wall outside her cage! I panicked. The sheet is about 2" from the cage, but I didn't have enough room to get my arm far enough back to help her. I started to move the cage farther from the wall (the sheet came with it), and then she managed to pull herself free somehow. It's tender to the touch, but she can still use it to climb and grip. I checked on her this morning and she doesn't seem to be favoring it. I don't think anything is broken, but I'm sure it's sore and she probably strained a muscle trying to pull herself free. Luckily she also didn't lose any nails, and everything seems to move fine.

I have no idea how she got herself caught in the sheet. Since it's so far from the cage I never thought it could be dangerous. But now I know that it can. I have taken my sheets down, and I'll have to find another way to protect my walls from flying BML. But at least my babies will be safe.

Another lesson is to never ignore your glider if it barks - there is always a reason, even if we don't understand it at first. If I hadn't come when I heard her bark, she might have resorted to chewing on her arm instead of the cage. Luckily I heard her, because she had already chewed the coating off the bars in an area larger than a quarter trying to get at her hand.

Please learn from my mistake and find another way to cover the walls.

Brittney

Brittney, I would have NEVER thought about the sheet as being dangerous. I wonder if plastic would have the same danger? I'm so glad that Kayla is okay. Thanks for posting this.

I'm so glad you found your glider in time! That story could have had a much different - and worse - ending.

Some other options: Marie had her walls covered with contact paper, and she just wiped the walls down with a damp sponge. Robin tacks up shower curtains to her walls; those wipe down as well - and are easily replacable.

Hi all,
the way i contain the "flyin' mess" is i put their foodbowls under a small plastic tub that measures aprox. 5 by 10 inches and about 4 inches deep !! My husbad drilled several tiny holes for air in the sides and one entrance hole made with a drill used to make holes in a door for the lock ! Works like a charm and they seem to like the privacy they are getting while eating !! And if you'd like to be able to watch them then get something that's fairly clear plastic !!

Brittney, I just got your e-mail about this, I can't believe that happened! The sheet seemed so far back for such a little creature to be able to reach! I'm so glad everything turned out okay! Jeez what a scare! Points out that it could happen to anyone because I KNOW what a good glider mommy you are.

I'm kinda new about Sugar Gliders. And I didn't know they make messes with BML. How do they get it on the wall, and does it come off the wall? If it's frozen you think it wouldn't make a mess?

I'm glad you were there to help your Glider, she must of been scared. I want to thankyou for the warning so I know that when I get my Glider.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I had actually thought about using contact paper, but I would have to tack it to the wall because I rent. I might try a shower curtain. THey are only $1 at Dollar Tree, so they are definitely affordable That's what I used for a while under my bird cage to protect my carpet

sugalover - when gliders eat BML tehy somehow end up throwing it everywhere. Sometimes I think they are just being artistic, LOL. IF you don't cover your walls, in a few days you will notice these little brown spots of goup on the walls. If you can get to it while it is still wet it's not too bad to clean up. But if you leave it for even a day, then it dries and you will spend hours scrubbing to get it all off. That's why a lot of people just use sheets to protect their walls. Now tha tI know it ca nbe dangerous, I will try shower curtains or contact paper. I like watching my babies eat and rubbing their backs while they eat too much to cover them up

hey, ya'll mught want to try putting plexy glass on the wall. it's easy to clean and if you ever want to take it down all you have to do is fill in the screw holes. that way your wall still looks like the rest of your wall, no danger, and it shortens your cleaning time. hope this helps.

I went and bought some thick clear vinyl sheeting from a fabric store. I just thumbtacked it to the walls around the cage...its clear so its not too noticeable and it wipes off easily. Cost is only a couple bucks a yard.

Sugalover: (the BML melts pretty fast)... Hehe, I swear if there was a Glider Little League Baseball team...Id sign mine up! They have great throwing arms! I dont know how they get some of the stuff they get that far away from the cage! (Im beginning to wonder though....my dog likes the gliders and sleeps next to their cage alot.... weeeell, I know why now - I think they throw food out just for the dog...LOL! The dog watches when they eat, and when they throw something, she "catches" it! Yum! )

I use corragated plastic sheets behind my glider cage. I even use them on the floor for easy clean up. They come in 4'x8' 1/8" thick sheets and you can cut them to the size you need. They are strong and stand on there own. They even come in different colors as well as clear. You can get them in the building section of Home Depot for super cheap. I even made my litter trays out of it.

I had some teddy bear wrapping paper when I was moving them into their current room. I cut it to fit and taped it to the wall. It looks cute, cheap and disposable!
I hope Kayla is ok. When we get their new room done, it's tailor made for the gliders, they will have a shower tile board behind the cages to catch the bml and make it easy to clean. I was even thinking of maybe spraying some pam on it so it wouldn't stick quite so bad!
Will let you all know how it works out.
Chey

I actually put fabric up on my wall before I even realized how helpful it would be for the glider-food. I live in an apartment, so I can't paint, but I wanted some color on the walls. I bought some cheap sheets from Target, ironed and starched them so that they were very taunt. I used TONS of small nails to attach it to the wall at the top and bottom. This way, it is just like wall paper, but it still keeps the wall clean. Also, it looks nice. I bought the matching pillow cases, cut the open edge down so that it was the shape of a square, stuffed them with cotton, sewed up the open side and I automatically had matching throw pillows.
