I got 2 male gliders about 10 months ago as a rescue from a traveling animal show. One of the gliders died the next day because they were very unhealthy and very malnutriened. They were fed 75% grapes and the rest was other fruit. He told me that when I got them. Anyway..Tango seamed to be doing good. We put him with a female and they bonded. The only thing is they are both of breeding age as they tango is now 19 months old and his mate Teeki is 16 months old. Never have any babies come. Also Tangos bald spot is really small compared to my other male. I never really thought into it.
Tango stopped eating about a week ago. I took him upstairs with me and gave him some fruits and some of his favorite foods. He ate them and went back to playing. He was completely normal. The day before yesterday I went to check on the gliders at about 10:00PM..and Tango was in this basket thing I have in his cage. He was also in there the first time he was sick. He was barely moving. He hadn't eaten all day..or the night before..i tried hand feeding him but he wouldn't eat. It was Sunday so the vet was closed. Then yesterday he started eating a little. He was bouncing around and seamed happier. He was doing a little better. Just to be safe I made an appointment for the vet for this morning at 9:00AM. This morning he was all disorientated. I was heartbroken..he seamed to be doing well. This was at about 7:00 and we called the vet and she aid we could bring him now the vet should be there in a half hour. She is 20 minutes away so we left right then and there..in pajamas. On the way there he started twitching and seizuring. We thought he was dead more than once but he would wake up. When we got to the vet I told them not even really to bother he was so weak that I would rather have him die in my hands instead of the hands of a stranger. I figured he wouldn't last more than 5 minutes. They said they wanted to try and stabilize him..i laughed in between tears because I never thought that was possible. He was barely breathing. They put him under oxygen for a few inutees and looked at him and did some tests. The vet said that it looked like liver failure because of his orangy color. I explained that his color has gotten at least 50 times better since I have gotten him which is completely true. She said he has been sick since before I got him it just never kicked in until now. Imagine my suprise when she said he has had a liver problems for over a year!! I felt horrible. I always thought that he was a healthy glider. The vet said that thanks to BML diet he has been on with me and his big cage and lots of love he has made it this long. he was also hypoglysimic (sp?) from not getting sugar because he was not eating. She said she cant see him making it either. I had to leave him till tomorrow when I would either pick him up in a cage or in a bag. I called a few minutes ago and she said.....that against odds..he has stabilized! There is still a high chance we will lose him but I thougt that you guys here on GC help out so much maybe everyone can say a prayer for poor Tango. I will keep everyone updated..

Thank you for loving him so much...At least he will leave happy and loved...but I'm not giving up...I send all the glider prayers, best wishes, and luck I can find...I think you need it more for your little on than I do for my trip!!!! LOTS of luck!!! I'm going to worry until I get back on here August 1st...Hope at that time I will see that the little guy made it!!

Cassie, that's one courageous glider! Regardless of the outcome, it is clear this is a special glider who has fought valiantly for his life. I'm glad you got him to a knowledgeable vet, and hope he continues to stabilize.

Cassie: prayers coming your way from Glideroo & crew. I agree wholeheartedly with your vet that the BML diet and love you have provided to Tango has helped to keep him going for the last 10 months. Please keep us posted on how he is doing.

My heart broke as I read your post. Please know that my prayers are with you and your little one.
As many of us have had to go through something like this I can say we know your pain.
I just don't have the words to say more, except tell him to keep fighting.
Glider love to all of you.

you can move this into real storys the false hope was because of the sugar injections they gave him. Now he is with his brother i guess Thank you all for all your kind words. at first i felt so guilty because i didnt take him to the vet in the first place. i can kick myself for it now. The vet said a liver problem is usally an uncorrectable problem anyway, but i still feel like it could have been prevented some way. She said because of his size he had never grown correctly. The comfort i have is that she wrote me a paper saying that said he has been sick due to improper diet for over a year. I am going to send it to the "animal guys" (animal show name) and let them know how devistating this had been. Also, i realied, there is such a small chance they are USDA lisenced at all (and they have 1 or 2 breeding pairs that they refused to sell me) and i hope to god i can shut them down. how can they call themselves "The animal Guys" ?!?? i have been crying all day. What makes me sad it that his mate, Teeki, knew that he would die today. she wouldnt even let me get him out of the basket this morning before the vet appointment. Poor Teeki!! Thanks again for all your sweet words and prayers. I am going to print this out and bury it with him. He was really cared about and loved and i just hope he is in a better place now. Even if it isnt with me.

Cassie, we are all crying with you. IT is so sad to lose a little one.
We all beat ourselves up when they go. In your case you must know that you gave that little guy the happiest time of his life. He knew he was loved and cared for. And you have done all that.
Again I am so sorry.
I would love to be able to be on the band wagon when you go after that ANIMAL that has his traveling show.

Casey, I feel so sad for you and your glider who is now gone. But you have done your very best. Tango was loved for the short time he was in your care and he knew it. Be content to know...a very special glider once owned and loved you too.

Casie,

My is hurting for you right now. Please don't feel guilty. Like others have said, you gave little Tango a happy life. You were, and always will be his hero. Tango is in a better place, waiting with his brother until you get there. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
