I saw Lilo has a small lump next to her cloaca this morning. Last night she hissed just a little when she was going to the bathroom, but by the time I could get my eyes focused in the low light she was done. I don't know if she was peeing or pooping when she hissed.

This is a pic of the lump this morning. She has a vet apt at 1 pm today, but my reg vet is gone. I am seeing my back up as I did not want to wait til monday to get her checked out.

I am going to make sure they do a fecal and UA is there anything else I should ask for? One more thing, she may be prego. She and Storm were mating on 8/6/07 and she probably did take, as I had kept her with me for the last 2 heat cycles to make her take a baby break.
You don't think me not letting her mate for two cycles caused this do you? shock

I will ask about meds that are safe for a joey but, I know it is cold hearted to say, but if it is between my Lilo getting better and losing a joey, Lilo is WAY more important to me than a "maybe" joey.

hug2 Oh dear!, I don't like the looks of that at all! I'm glad that your taking her in this afternoon to get it checked. It's hard to determine what really is the cause at this point, but I don't feel that having her miss two cycles would do this. I agree, if there were a choice your heart is the best choice to follow.
Please keep us posted, and I will keep you and Lilo in my thoughts and prayers. heart

Snowmanda had a glider w/anal gland probs. I know the vet gave Clavamox for the antibiotic. She's not online right now, but you may want to pm her. I had talked to her about it a few weeks ago and she said that the vet did a culture on the discharge and the first one was negative but the second one was loaded w/bacteria. You may want to see if the vet today can do a culture, but I would also plan a follow up visit w/your regular doc as soon as he gets back. You're right about not waiting though. Let us know what you find out.

T, I'm so glad you're taking her in today and not waiting until Monday because like Suz, I don't think that looks very good at all worried Sure hope Lilo is feeling better soon! Please keep us updated and let us know how she's doing and what happens at the vet. hug2 s and prayers headed that way!

Well, I think Becki meant LINDA when she said she agreed that it doesn't look good, but now that I'm here, I'll agree too roflmao
Seriously though, I'm glad you've made an appointment for her so quickly. It looks like it may be an infected anal gland OR an infected scent gland... either way, see if the vet can get a sample to send out for Culture & Sensitivity.

Any idea what would cause that? She has not been constipated or anything. It seemed to just show up over night.
Obviously the vet will know how to get a sample without expressing it right? I read in another post that they should not express it because it will cause more damage. At least she is acting normal and it doesn't seem to hurt. She peed and pooped today without any hissing.

You may want to get ahold of Jen (Xfilefan) to see what her recommendation would be. I know she's dealt with a similar infection before...

good news and not so good news.

Lilo's anal gland is not infected or inpacted. She has an absess. Possibly from a scratch or some excessive mating. wink
The vet called and confered with another exotic vet and they think that the best thing to do is to use a warm washrag held on the spot for about 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day and gave me a topical antibiodic cream to put on it following the warm compress. He said to hold her or play with her for a few minutes after applying the cream to give it a chance to soak in, but it will not hurt her or her baby (if she is prego) if she does lick it off. I am to call him every day to tell him if it is getting better or worse.

She was a good girl. Doc said it looked painful, but that she sure didn't act like it was bothering her. He was very impressed with how nice she was. He kept laughing because everytime he let go of her, she ran right down my shirt again.

Now for the not so good news. Lilo was NOT happy about being in her Sissy ( she's very much a bra baby and that is where she wanted to be exclamation ) while I was checking her in, she pulled the zipper apart from the inside cry I put it back together for the ride home and within 5 minutes here she was up my shirt sleve and back in "her" spot. crazy So I have lost my only Sissy pouch. cry

Thank You for the update! Hopefully the treatment plan will take care of the infection. Was the vet able to determine if she is pregnant? It would be good right now if she isn't.
She sure is a stubbron little girl.....persistant....is her mommy that way too? roflmao
Good luck and keep us posted!

No we do not know if she is prego or not. They were just mating on the 6th so the joey will not drop IP until the 22nd. When I told him that I had kept her from hubby for two heat cycles, that is when he thought that they may have gotten too aggressive and she tore alittle bit causing the absess. It was funny, he was blushing when he said it. blush

And No of course mommy is not persistant, mommy is a calm, patient angel. angel roflmao

btw: I forgot to add, I asked about a C&S but he said that since it was not leaking any fluid and it was not hurting her, it would cause more pain and problems at this point to use a needle. If it does not get better in a few days or gets worse I am to call him at home and we will change tactics.

T- I am glad that you have the issue under control! I have been dealing with anal gland issue's with popeye and the pic you showed did not look like is, but i'm not saying it could not either. Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind was an abcess too. That's so good to hear that it does not sound like treatment will have to be invasive right now, and I am hoping for a speedy healing for lilo!

I would also talk to Jen, she is who I talked to about Popeye, she is really helpfull!

I'm sending you, and Lilo many hug2!

Did they say whether the anal gland was, in fact, involved or not? If this is internal (meaning you can't reach it all with an external cream) I would highly advise using an oral antibiotic along with.

And it isn't that the anal glands CAN'T be expressed, it's that they are multi chambered and very easy to damage or rupture. Abscesses need to be cleared out in order to heal, as they heal from the inside out-if it closes over without healing on the inside, sealing infection in, you're going to go through it over and over again as it keeps forcing it's way out. It needs to be done very gently, and carefully, and it may take two people if the glider puts up a good fight and you can't do both at once (hold the glider and work with the gland(s)).

In a case where the gland or it's chambers are already ruptured or badly damaged, expressing it is likely only to make things worse, and spread infection further into the body, possibly accelerating a systemic problem.

No the anal gland is not involved. He really checked into that before calling the other vet. He knew that about the damage that can be done and was already explaining it to me when I was pulling out my notes from this board wink I had all sorts of info and phone numbers in my pocket. He still thinks that she got a scratch or something from Storm holding on to her or grooming her privates too aggressively when they were mating. He also did a full body check on her to make sure there were no more scratches or absesses we couldn't see under her hair. I was pretty impressed with the amount of time he spent with her.

I just called and asked the doc about oral antibiodics after reading this, he said the other vet did not think it was necessary, but it could not hurt if I wanted to use them. I'm going up to get them now, I'll use them along with the warm compresses (she hates those)and the topical cream. I will try to get a pic later. She was not in the mood for bugging this morning. But the absess looks WAY better and smaller this morning.

BTW: he's ordering amoxicillin and I'm to give it twice a day injected into a mealie for 14 days. He said it was the least likely to hurt a joey if there is one show up next week. Do you think he was right?

wave tbull, I am happy to hear that your baby is doing better! I feel that having her on an oral antibiotic will help alot! Injecting it into a mealie is a wonderful idea! That is what I've done with my gliders when they were on medications and it really works great!
Your doing a terrific job with her! Thank You for the update...still sending you lots of hugs and prayers. heart

Lilo's little bum looks so much better today. The swelling is down and the color back to pink. She still stays on her meds for the whole dose but I can't believe how fast it got better.

Amoxicillin is probably one of the best when a joey is suspected. BUT-be aware in most gliders it can cause really bad diarrhea as well (usually within the first 24 hours or so-frequently by the next morning if it's started in the evening). Riker can't take it because we can't get it under control with him. So just be aware of that, and ready with some oatmeal flakes, canned pumpkin, pedialyte if it does happen. With this one, it tends to last the length of the meds, though occasionally it will firm up some as treatment continues with one here and there. Edit:(meaning an occasional glider-it didn't sound right like I wrote it)

Great news that it's improving! Keep us updated smile
