Lucy's baby came OOP on the 3rd of February. All morning Lucy and Monkey have been crabbing constantly (Up until hubby took them out to nap w/ them) When we took them out earlier Lucy had the baby's back leg in her mouth! The baby wasn't making any moise like it was in pain or anything, but I have never seen Lucy do this before. It was almost like she was trying to get the baby to be still as Lucy would get the back leg in her mouth and then bury herself under her blankets and be real still. She wasn't letting go og that baby for anything (not that I tried to take the baby or anoything)
Is this normal? I imagine that if it is normal, I just haven't caught her doing this to her last babies, and I just caught her this time. Right now they are on the couch with hubby sleeping, so they haven't been crabbing.
The last baby she had didn't end up so well as it appeared that mom and dad killed it (trying not to be gross, but those of you who have experienced that know what I am talking about) and I am afraid they are going to do the same thing to this one.

They could have been crabbing for a few reasons. Sometimes when the joey is just oop, the male wants to mate again and the female is not really ready, so for that reason they may crab and squabble. Also, the mother could be crabbing at the baby for trying to nurse. What have you done differently to prevent them from cannibalizing this joey? You may want to consider supplementing the mothers diet with some more insects and possibly some wombaroo so she can make more milk. As for the leg in the mouth, I'd be a bit worried.... She could have been just moving the joey around, but with your last situation going the way it did, I'd be concerned. Try supplementing momma and see if that helps

well.. with one of my girls.. she had two joeys in pouch.. she crabbed alot .. at herself.. or well.. the joeys moving inside of her.. well.. now we have one joey.. and I'm fighting for his life.. she had nipped his front left leg.. and over groomed his wing area... so we are applying neosporin so that he doesn't get an infection.. we are also supplementing puppy milk (even though its not wombaroo.. under the circumstances we needed to start feeding the joey right away).. when we found him.. he had been out of the pouch for .. ooh.. less than one week.. so he was in pretty bad shape.. he's healing up nicely now... and since I've been having him drink some of the puppy milk.. momma has been feeding him too.. and trying to take care of him.. before she would just leave the baby with my other momma..
Maybe your momma just can't handle the joeys... or doesn't get enough milk for them.. and that is why she cannabolized them.. (assuming that is what you were talking about)
as far as that being normal.. I've never seen my girls do that to the kids..

Ok, this was most definately NOT normal Within the time of hubby getting them calmed down and sleeping, he put them back in the cage and I went to lay down (same room as cage) all of the sudden the dad starts running around the cage (certainly not normal this time of day) so I get up to check what is going on and mom is basically "scalping" the babys tail!!! Right now hubby is at pet supply getting all the necessary feeding items and I have baby wrapped in his blanket in my bra to keep warm. Hes sleeping sound right now. There was no major bleeding, but there were a few nics so I put some neosporin on them. I have never had to hand feed a baby before and I am quite terrified right now
How can I tell if mom is not producing enough milk? I hoped so badly that the last time was a one time incident.... apparently not

Here are the directions to hand-feed a joey-there is an attachment at the top. I've never done it, so I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. Hopefully the board members that have will see this. I hope your baby does okay. Hand Feeding a Joey

To tell if he has been getting milk, look at his belly. If he is young enough and hairless enough, you can actually see the milk in his tummy when you hold him up to the light.

I would supplement. They should be feed every 2 hours. I would first try and supplement every other feeding because mom might not be producing enough but keep an eye on them and make sure thats what it is. Here is a link to Joey growth and Development So you know how much to feed.

I just wanted to take a sec and thank everyone for all of the information.... the baby passed a few minutes ago. I don't know why I have never had this happen and I am just devestated I called everywhere I could think of that had an after hours care, but none that were open would take a glider
I can say this much, I am going to have the dad neutered pretty quick. I love my gliders and I love the babies, but I can't handle things like this

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your baby. Sometimes a glider just doesnt want to be a parent. I know it can be a hard thing to go through and my thoughts are with you!!
