Well, we are in day two with our new baby female glider whom we named Bella.

Last night when she first came home, she wanted nothing to do with us so we put her in her cage (where we collectively must have spent over $300 on beds, toys, etc) and she seemed fine. Well, at about 4:30am I heard a lot of crabbing and I went and read to her ("If you give a pig a pancake" seems to be her favorite, but she seems to like "If you give a mouse a cookie" too... go figure) and she quieted down and I went back to bed.

At around 6am the crabbing began again and she had gotten out of her tent and was on the side of her cage. I talked to her and she kept crabbing so I opened the cage and put my hand in, she was very cautious but she climbed up my arm to my shoulders and stayed there for a good hour just looking around. She started to fall asleep so I put her back in her cage and put a slice of watermelon in as well.

At about 11am, the crabbing begun again so I opened the cage again and she immediately ran up my arm to my shoulder. She hadn't touched the watermelon, so I picked it up and held it for her and she at the whole little slice! She ran around me for a while and I laid down on the couch for a bit and she moved to my chest (she didn't like her pouch very much) and curled up in a little ball and went to sleep and I just put her back in her cage where she continues to sleep.

What can I say, this college guy is in love with that little ball of fur. I am a bit worried though, I've put two different kinds of glider food into her cage in addition to a water bottle, a bowl of normal water, and a bowl of glideraid and she wants nothing to do with any of them. As far as I know, she hasn't eaten anything except the watermelon and hasn't touched the water, should I be worried?

I have a question that is kind of off topic, but related to your post. I was wondering if giving the glider attention every time she crabs is a bad thing. It seems like rewarding the behavior would just make her crab more in the future. I am not stating that this is my opinion as I don't even have my little girl yet, I am just curious. Thanks in advance for the help.

David

Ok. This kind of behavior could simply be her getting used to the new environment. I have a couple of questions though. How old is this girl? Is she your only one? What do you know about her prior home? She doesn't seem to fear you, but I wonder if she is missing a glider she was bonded with back at her prior home. Also, has she been for a vet check and is she using the bathroom ok? Sometimes gliders get backed up and it hurts them to go potty. You can put a layer of paper towels down and check it to see if she is pottying. Others may think of other things to ask, but these are basic wellness questions. Crabbing is most common in a new glider when they are being approached, either by the new owner or by another glider. But before you begin to be concerned, answer these questions and we will begin to eliminate the possibility of illness.

It sounds like she is in love with you.. on a side note I would really take out the bowl of water try and see if you can get her to use the water bottle and teach her how if she doesn't know. But a bowl of water in my books is a no no just in case she some how ends up face first and can't get out.

Good luck!

She is 7 or 8 weeks old and she came from a recommended breeder outside of Chicago (they seemed like great people, very caring and have already emailed to check up on her). As for the bathroom, oh yes, but she seems to love to poop on me! It's been runny (not to be disgusting) and she has pee'd on me a few times, but she's a baby and I understand that and it's easily cleaned up. She crabbed through the evening, but she doesn't seem to be afraid of me and will let me pick her up and even go in her pouch to get her with a minimal if any crabbing. She hasn't lunged at me or tried to bite yet, so I'm hoping it's a good sign and my Bella is just a sweet girl. But her lack of drinking bothers me. I gave her watermelon and mango and she seemed to be licking the moisture off of it. So I just want to make sure my little girl is fine.

Okay. With the info you gave, she seems to be old enough to be on her own. (8 weeks is the youngest date that it is okay to leave mom). So the crabbing is most likely just her way of saying "hey, I want some company." That is a good thing. She sounds like she likes you already.
Since she is pooping and peeing there seems to be no concern of blockage. As for eating and drinking, others may have told you in other posts already, she is just getting used to her environment and not to be too concerned about eating and drinking just yet. Try hand feeding her for a while. Seems she enjoys that too. You may contact the breeder and ask him/her if they have a certain type of water bottle they use. When I got my new girls, they would not use my guys water bottle. And vice versa, my guy would not use theirs. I now have both water bottles in there.
Another thing is that she may be drinking on the sly. To check for dehydration pull up her neck at the blades. If the skin doesn't go back down quickly then she is dehydrating and needs immediate intervention. Otherwise, I would not be concerned.
I welcome you to Glider Central by the way. This is a great family to be part of. I hope I have been of some help. Keep us updated.
