[:"green"]Okay, I know it's a strange question... but I was buying crickets at the pet store and noticed the full comet tanks... so I thought, "Hmmm, I wonder?!?" Do gliders like them? Are they safe to eat? I know they're a type of carp and that carp are "dirty fish" but they are sold as feeder-fish, so???

I'm not sure but on a nother note, I don't think it would be any more cruel to the fish than feeding a pinky, mealworm, or a cricket. Goldfish are are slimy are gross though so I don't think I'd do it!

I don't know either.. fist are really different from meat of a pinky or the (guts) of a bug.. I don't think mine would care for the scales.. plus I don't think they would go to well in their stomach.

Stay away from goldfish!!! They produce large amounts of an enzyme Vitamin C reductase. They use it to eliminate all traces of Vitamin C in their body. They do this because, just like all the other carp derivatives (such as Koi, Oranda, and other fancy goldfish) they do not like Vitamin C, it is bad for their physiology. This enzyme gets dissolved in fat and is very hard to get rid of, once it is in an animal. Fish and reptiles that are fed exclusively goldfish, quickly die, and those that get fed goldfish intermintently are often sick. this may not hold true for gliders, but it's definetly a concern when there are plenty of better alternatives for food out there (afterall how many fish do they catch in tree tops of Australia). P.S. I definetly agree on the bones.

They are very young (newborn) baby mice. I do not have any pictures, but I am sure you can find some using a Google Image Search. Imagine a small naked mouse, the size of the tip of your pinky-shaking and shivering.

I won't feed pinkies, I just would never be able to, I used to raise mice, and I just got so attached to the litter my Rose had, it was her first litter and the 10 little babies were the sweetest things in the world! She was such and good mommy too!!

Great info about the enzymes. I wouldn't have worried about the bones (I assume pinkies have bones), but I probably would have hesitated, not knowing if gliders have the digestive enzymes needed to digest fish. As you said, how many fish do they get in the treetops? Flying fish maybe? I had no idea about the Vit C stuff.
On the pinkies, some of the people who feed pinkies get them frozen, so no squirming, and I guess freezing is more humane than feeding them to the gliders live.

I don't think pinkies have bones, newborn animals tend to have cartilage till they're older.

Does anyone feed live pinkies?? It's illegal in the UK to feed live rodents to anything. Alot of people think it's cruel to feed insects too!!
Snakes need to eat rats and mice, it's not an option. My o/h has a rescue corn snake that was fed beef for much of it's life and it has severe metabolic bone disease/

feeding pinkies, or fuzzies... frozen more humane? try being the one that puts them in the freezer(while they huddle to get warm...or squeek)... or "thumps" them to end their lives quickly to prevent live freezing. It's a tough choice either way, one i'm not fond of either.I Don't feed pinkies to gliders. Used to raise mice for color variations. Many pet stores ask for "fresh Frozen" pinkies fuzzies, hoppers, and adults for the herp owners, tarantulas, etc. Part of life cycle for some animals.I no longer raise mice, as most people dont like "pet" mice (stigma i swear!) and my health is deteriorating.
I would think the "leftovers" from the pinkies would turn most peoples' stomachs also. Everyone has a line they draw on what they can handle, accept as to what pertains to humane. some go to both extremes. For me, if the animal must die to feed another, I would try to make it as painless as possible ... if that makes sense. But if it were me and "eat or be eaten"... i would eat... I will stop rambling before i get on the subject of kids being treated humanely vs animals...

I talked to someone who sells rodents at reptile expos they told me that the pinkies feel a warmth before they freeze.. I'm not sure how they know this, but if its true then freezing is much preferred to thumping them to death...

Fatalbert, I'm pretty sure that gliders leave no leftovers. There are people on GC that feed pinkies and apparently the glider eats everything. I don't see it as cruel, as you are not "wasting" another animal's life. But just my opinion.
