Right now, I'm using "Kage Kare" as a disinfectant for my cage cleanings. I need to get a refill, but it's $35 for a gallon of it. I'm looking for something cheaper and I've heard that you can mix bleach and water. Is this safe? If so, how would you mix it?

Bleach is a good disenfectant to use. Solution should be made in a ration of 10% bleach and 90% hot water with an antibacterial soap added. Once clean...rinse well.

I use what Judie said and it works great. I also soak toys in hot water/bleach for an hour then soap them up. Just rinse well!

How often do you clean with the bleach?

I only use the bleach once every week or 10 days. I wipe down the cage in between. It works really well

I read in some past posts that simple green was a good product to clean with. I always just used really hot water and soap and scrubbed it good then rinsed it. But, I could not get the pee smell out of the vynal coating. So, I tryed the simple green and it work's great. I rinse the cage and scrub it then I spray it with simple green and scrub again and rinse again and there is no smell left but the clean smell of the cleaner. You may want to try it.

I may be way off base here but I think I remember learning something in school (whoa!) about bleach and soap cancelling each other out? I thought you were supposed to use one or the other... then again that was a while ago!

You know... the more I think about it the more I'm not sure if I did learn that! Maybe I dreamt it while in class...

The moms said maybe I was thinking about ammonia and bleach?

Yeah, ammonia and bleach is a very bad combination. The fumes are really toxic.

Thanks for all the responses!
