About a month ago I posted that I was going to try astroturf in the bottom of my cages. I wanted something other than bars for my gliders to sit on and thought about the outdoor carpeting. I only covered the bottom half, and pushed it towards the back. My feeding dishes are up front and this allowed leftovers to fall through to the pan underneath. Astroturf is realtively cheap, about 3 bucks for a 12 inch by six foot piece. So I would cut a new piece, easy to do with any scissors, and replace the old one every week. Of course there was still feces on it and probably pee, but the old stuff I just through out. Well, after these past four weeks, I wanted to share with you that ALL of my gliders loved it. They would grab a mealworm from me and run back to their patch of grass and just chirp and eat. Many times I saw them sitting on it, sometimes scratching it. So I guess I would call it a success. I would suggest that if you do put some in there, to pull at the threads, especially on the sides, to see if there are any loose fibers. I didn't have an issue with anyone trying to eat it or use it for bedding (like fake leaves). I would be interested if anyone else has tried this or thinks I am just off my rocker.

sounds like an interesting idea Mister Ev... I'm glad it worked for you, and would consider it, but not right now, maybe in the future.

thanks for sharing your results!

...Not to mention, astroturf makes one of the most attractive and naturalistic cage/enclosure beddings, that is also quite easy to clean!

Great job and very interesting, Mister_Ev! I am an astroturf fan, as well. Though I've never used it for gliders, I have used it with much success for many other animals.

I've used the out door carpeting before in my cages (I used to use it in my repts) and my gliders loved it as well. I like the carpet better than astroturf though because you can toss it in the wash and reuse it. Also, it absorbs the pee and other odor causing stuff.

Home Depot, Lowe's any hardware store sells it. Here's a quick google site I found.
