OK so I dont know what to do!! He looks like he's bleeding from his chest. He's still running around and hyper and stuff and its not gushing or whatever, but I can't get him to stay still long enough to see whats going on! What should I do???????? If you want to call or whatever instead of write back my number is 757-469-8079 I dont know of an emergency vet around here that would be able to do anything if it is serious

First off, how old is he, how long have you had him, any new girls in the house?, neutered or no?
And what color, exactly, on the chest?
Some gliders secrete enough from the chest gland they'll actually get crusties (brownish) and look wet around that gland, particularly unneutered, mature males. Lets answer these, and go from there-don't panic yet.

First, don't panic..
Explain what you are seeing more carefully.. are you seeing bright red inmistakable blood or yellowish orange color in the dead center of his chest??
Is your boy intact?

How old is the baby male? If he's reaching maturity (becoming 'competition') your guy might be secreting more. If you really think there may be a wound, a vet check NEVER hurts, and can at least provide peace of mind. If it's not scenting, and there is a wound, 10 days of antibiotics just as a preventative to infection is a good idea. If you can catch him-either coax him into a pouch, or use a towel, here's a thread that will show how to immobilize him long enough to get a look (by holding as you would to medicate) The first three posts have pics to help: http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/170750#Post170750

its starting to sound like it might be the scent thing.... and not a "wound" - OMG that scared the [censored] out of me... because it wasnt there earlier tonight when I was playing with him. The baby is 3 months old. When I posted on here I also called an emergency vet in the area, but of course, they know nothing about gliders whoa I swear my heart almost stopped. Thats one thing I did NOT read about in my research of gliders - knew about the bald spot... but that?! nope.

It sounds to me like he has an active scent gland in the front of his chest that is working overtime because the new baby might be coming to the mature age.. he's basically showing dominence to the younger male to make sure that he holds his ground as king.. I would suggest making an appt. to get your baby boy fixed ASAP to avoid the boys fighting and possibly killing each other AND avoid inbreeding between mom and son.

3 weeks isn't very long-how old is the young male? It's possible you may need to separate or neuter the young one soon to prevent fighting with new little ones on the way. Because he's in a relatively new place, it's likely scenting, but as soon as you can get a look it's worth checking out. They will also go around scenting after a cage cleaning to make their territory 'theirs' again, too.

I have an appointment with the vet for a well-ness check before they get neutered... but I dont think that vet will neuter the baby male that soon - he told me 6 months. I'm afraid that will be too late because he seems to be maturing fast

Jenn, the thing with e- vets is that they dont know much about gliders.. almost NONE of them do.. but the good thing is as you are calling them, you can post here and get some ideas as to what might be going on.. Its always good to ask here adn then print out anything you can to give to the vet.. Since you momma has a joey IP now, i wold print out everything you can about glider health and breeding from Sue's page and keep it in a binder just incase there is no time to come here before a visit to the e- vet

so, should I keep the baby in a different cage? I mean, I dont want them to hurt each other - and the older male is starting to be more aggressive (he's biting me more often that he did)

as long as you know that the right thing to do in your situation is to get your baby boy neutered - then thats all you need to know.. I dont know much about gliders maturing "faster" than others.. but from what i have read, they are all somewhat the same.. i might worry about the baby IP though, if he starts to show agressiveness towards the mom, he MAY steal her baby from her..
I would look into that more..
Have you thought about neutering dad soon? Eventually you will end up with too many gliders, and if you dont have anyone to sell them to, you might end up with asome gliders in rescues.. You;ve obviously seen first hand how quickly these gliders will reproduce, like bunnies!!!

so with that, gliders obviously make ALOT of noises, but is there a noise I should be noticing that might mean "get away from me" or "i'm going to hurt you" or something that is defensive that the baby and dad might get into a "fight" (for lack of a better term)

You will hear a PSSST or a pffffft.. or sometimes pssstcrab or pffffftcrab. basically anything that sounds like crabbing would be bad.. psssst is usually used for the get yoru foot out of my face! but it could be worse.. if it is mixed with a crab sound, then they are having a little fight.. i would keep a close eye on them and if you feel uncomfortable and the baby is always picking on mom, then take the boy out, put him in a cage right next to mom and dad and have LOTS AND LOTS of out of cage supervised play time together.

Pssst, Pssst noises and crabbing are usually the knock it off or I'm mad sounds-sometimes almost together. If actually fighting, crabbing goes along with. You'll learn their noises as you go, but if you hear a lot of that going on, likely they're on each other's nerves at least. If they ever end up in a rolling, crabbing ball, separate IMMEDIATELY-that's when they're out to cause serious harm to each other. Edit: and as you can see, lol, we're all so eager to help we post at the same time and repeat each other.

ok I'll keep an eye out for that because i've definitely heard a lot of noise from their cage, usually when they are all together in a pouch - but i will have to listen to the sounds online again to really try to notice if its just crabbing or if its both. Thanks for all your help. Sorry to have scared everyone but I was freaked out! It was just SO noticeable. Well, Thanks again - I have got to get some sleep finally - i have to work tomorrow (this) morning.

if its crabbing at each other, i would take them out.. i think crabbing is the ultimate I HATE YOU sound when it comes down to suggie on suggie fighting.. they crab at us because they are scared - usually terrified.. when they crab at ech other, its an equally as intense emotion, but more like anger.. crabbing goes beyond frustration.. PSSTTT sounds are usually squabbles. I have 5 boys and they squabble quite a bit (all neutered btw) BUT then NEVER EVER crab at each other.. if i heard crabbing coming from the cage i would be concerned.. especially if they are in the pouch together.. I dont mean to scare you.. but i'm just telling you how i feel what i hear that noise.. unless something LOUD or startling just happend around their cage - thats they ONLY time they crab when with each other.
