Lately I've been trying out a fun new project for my gliders.
I took a large manzanita branch and drilled some decent sized holes in it. I took some acacia gum powder, mixed it with some bee pollen granules and added some passion fruit juice to make it into a sweet gum with little "treasures". I took the gum mix and squished it into the holes and put it into the cage for my gliders to have fun with!
Some of my gliders loved it, others weren't so crazy about it. My younger ones cleaned the branch as if it were the best thing they've ever had
It kept them occupied for quite some time and obviously filled an instinctual void in their lives, which is to forage for gum from tree branches.
Anyways, thought it was a neat idead that I'd share.
Next I'm looking for a larger syringe to use to inject the gum to make it less messy, but the gum is pretty thick stuff so who knows if that'll work!

I love watching those busy little minds at work, looks like I will be trying this at home with my own gliders. Excellent! Where did you get the idea to do this?

Mother Nature herself inspired me to create this, lol Just trying to duplicate her handiwork in the cages of my gliders.
Actually though I also read an article about the use of enrichment feeders for marmosets who also are gum eaters. In the article they used these feeders and drilled holes into logs and such. It helped create a better zoo exhibit since the marmosets came out and fed on the gum thus giving the visitors more viewing pleasure, and the marmosets also had something fun that they instinctively enjoyed. They just used plain gum, but my gliders are spoiled brats and find plain gum to be boring so I added little treasures of bee pollen granules and sweetened it with some passion fruit juice, mmmm. Mixing the stuff is a royal pain in the butt though, be forwarned!

The gum can be bought in powder form from exotic nutrition's website. Also, they sell the pollen. The branches are common Manzanita cage branches that you can find in the bird aisle of the pet store.
