We returned from holidays today and experienced someting very sad.
Kika who was expecting twins lost one of her babies.
She is very comfortable with us handling her. As my son Eric was craddling her in his hands looking at her two large lumps in her pouch, she very carfully took one of her babies out of the pouch. We could immediately see that it was not moving and that it was very pale. At that point we put her back in her carrying pouch and kept an eye on her. She held her little baby in her arms and licked it for a very long time. She just looked so sad and looked at us as if she didn't know what was happening. She just continued to hold it and after about an hour we put her pouch back in her cage. She ventured out alone and started eating, leaving her baby in the pouch. At that point I took her pouch and baby away to examine the baby. It was dead, as we suspected.
Although I could see nothing wrong with it I guess Kika knew it was dead and that is why she removed it from her pouch.
I know some of you might find this grim but I decided to take a few pictures of the baby before I buried him....It was a little boy...that I will name Angel. He was very tiny and had no hair at all but was fully formed..even down to the little toes and tiny pompom.
If the pictures turn out I will post them...since many of us here on the board never get to acually see an intact baby before they come OOP.
Even though I am extremely sad right now, I was very impressed with the gentleness that Kika showed to her dead baby. She is an extremely caring mom.
Please pray that her other baby will make it.

Oh my gosh that is sooo sad! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> What a sweet mom Kika is. Geez, I never heard of a glider being so caring to a baby that was not going to make it. Hope her other baby will be okay.

That was a very sweet story! I had never imagined them being that sweet to a baby they lost either. It definitely makes up for some of the more gruesome losses of joeys.
I really hope her other baby makes it just fine. How much longer does she have?

I am very sorry about ANgel and I am sure his daddy is taking are of him up there over the rainbow . I will so be praying for her baby that is still in pouch and it's health that it makes it to OOP day healthy as can be and that it is a lil girl so she can stay with momma.
Glider prayers and hugs to you all ...
Just a note I was just thinking while typing this maybe he went to be with his dad so he would not have to get neitered to stay with momma so that his twin would possibly be bale to keep momma company and him keep his daddy company ? Just a thought.

Sorry about the little guy not making it. It is always sad when you loose a baby of any kind. Hugs to you and yours. I hope that the other joey will be just fine, sad stuff. We have to take the good with the bad, even though it doesn't seem right. Makes breeding harder for me each time we loose a baby boa.

Sorry to hear of the little one. I don't think there is anything wrong with posting pics of him. We did it when we lost our little girl. Look in the gallery under tager's girl and you will see her. She was found in her dead mothers pouch and was only about 1 1/2 - 2 inches long (not including tail) and was hairless with her eyes closed. We nursed her but to no avail.
I think it is wonderful that your glider is such a terrific mommy <img border="0" alt="heart" title="" src="graemlins/heartpump.gif" /> . You are very lucky.
Take care. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Tager,
My joey looked exactly the same as the one you have in your pics. It too was about that big,
1 1/2 inch long. Do you know about how old it was?

The other joey in Kika's pouch is much bigger. You can see it stretching it's legs and the tail sometimes sticks out. It already has gray fur on its tail so I think that it must be much older than the other one that died.
So far the other baby is doing fine cause like I said, you can see it wiggling around in there. I hope it is a girl!!!!

Pam, I am very sorry.
Heartbreaking how kika was still caring for her poor little baby. He is in <img border="0" alt="[Glider Angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gliderangel.gif" /> a better place now.

I am so sorry about the loss of your little joey. It really hurts when any pet or glider goes. If Kika was such a good mommy to the baby that had already passed away, I am sure she will take just as good or better care of her baby in the pouch. Best wishes to you and your glider family.

Pam....

Cheeko's story is one I will never forget, and although Angel's passing is so sad...he and Dad are both <img border="0" alt="[Glider Angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gliderangel.gif" /> 's now. I look forward to seeing photos of Angel. What a sweet Mom he had, both glider and human. We will be praying for the other little one <img border="0" alt="heart" title="" src="graemlins/heartpump.gif" />

The other twin still continues to do well....
Once I looked back on the dates of when I first notice lumps in Kika's pouch I realized that it should be in the next week that they should have come OOP. That joey was nowhere near developed to where it should have been and the other joey still in pouch has a lot of growing to do yet.
With Kikas last set of joeys, I remember how big and awkward Kika got and she is not very big this time. I am really worried about the one remaining.
Please pray that he?, she? makes it!!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

I am very sorry that the little one did not make it. Nature can be both wise and seemingly cruel at the same time. Again, I am sorry for your loss!

What a sad story. She sounds like she's a great mom, not many are that caring for a sickly baby. She will really appreciate the joey she has in her pouch right now. I'm glad to hear there are some glider mom's who go the extra mile for their babies. Good luck with the other joey.

Oh, I am so sorry about your little angel. Doesn't just break your heart when you loose one?

Tager, your poor little one too. I commend your efforts to keep it alive.

They are now furries in heaven
