We are thinking about eventually beginning a colony (not for a while!) so I figured I may as well start researching it. I have a few questions

1. What have people found to be the ideal colony size?
2. Is it recommended to try to get as many related gliders as possible if the males were neutered right from the start?
3. If we got an unrelated male for breeding, is it a good idea to let him 'have his pick' and then separate him & the wifey to be a breeding pair, and keep the rest of the colony together?
4. How many neutered and/or unrelated males can be kept together?

Ok I hope it's not too many questions! I tried doing some research on GC for related topics but couldn't find much information!

Thanks everyone!

Colonies are trick. Honestly, it all depends on the gliders. Some females won't accept other females, some males won't accept other males (neutered or not). The trick to colonies is finding compatible gliders. You need to be aware that some gliders just won't work in a colony situation. That means you'll most likely end up with cage upon cage upon cage of "rejected" gliders... Personally, I think the best way to start a colony is with a male/female pair or 2 females (sisters) and a male. Allow them to breed and then neuter the male. Then bring in another younger male once the origonal males hormones calm down. This arangement would be much more similar to what happens in the wild vs. having several unrelated gliders put together. The only thing is, you'll have to either neuter or remove all male joeys produced to prevent inbreeding...

I have to add that even established colonies will sometimes reject a glider. I have a colony and had to remove one of my gliders because her twin brother kept beating her up. My colony consists of:
Dexter
Dixie
Chip (Dex and Dixie's son)
Missy (unrelated female)
KoKo (Dex and Dixie's son, twin to Dayla)
Nickolas (Chip and Missy's son)

Dayla was in there too but when KoKo and Dayla were about 4 months old, KoKo kept bullying her and beating her up (even after neutering) so she is now housed with CiCi and they are the best of friends!

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
