WOw. Uh OH.

Maybe they'll have a grandfather clause, for those who already have suggies?

Talk about government encroachment! (okay, maybe that's a little harsh, but I'm kind of upset)

You can keep a pig but not a tiny little ol' suggie who can be CAGED? I won't be going back to that area. NC doesn't have defined laws on exotics, I worry that when some politician/s get the mind to draw them up...

Will it be legal to own anything anymore? I'm sorry for such an emotional response. I love exotics for their special needs, not in spite of them. So many people DO know what they're "getting into" and successfully own them, but because of the growing number of knuckleheads making their way to the news, people are terrified. *take a deep breath*

I wrote letters against these regulations while they were still just being proposed. It sux that they've been adopted. I live right over the city line in Baltimore County, so I'm still safe, I just worry the county will take up the same regulations as the city. Does anyone know if they made grandfathering an option?

OUCH!! - I feel for the SG onwers that live in Baltimore, hopefully a grand-clause will go into effect and it will not be like the state that out lawed Pitbulls, with no exceptions.

Ok, that article revealed a lot of stupidity on the part of those lawmakers. first of all they are not a kind of flying squirrel. next if he wants to make the argument that lack of constant handling would return them to their wild habits of scratching and biting then ALL animals should be illegal. He stated that as if that were not the case with dogs and cats. I know for a fact that coming upon a ferral dog or cat will result in the same scratching and biting that he referred to with the gliders and coatimundi.
If the concern is about lack of knowledge in ownership then the regs should be made to reflect the need for a license or some other such regulator for ownership of an exotic animal.
Besides, consider the length of time that gliders have been around in the states, over 15 years now right? and yet they are still considered 'wild animals' I would wager a guess that at least 99% of gliders currently in the USA were captive bred and raised.
So sorry that you all in Baltimore are facing this challenge.

We should find out the office addresses of these "law makers" and show up at their office with our friendly pet gliders to show them how ignorant they are about sugar gliders as pets!

Actually, it sounds like a lot of their concern is for the animals themselves. They are absolutely correct that many people get gliders, now knowing how difficult they are to care for and the gliders end up in rescue. They are also correct that without proper socialization, gliders can become difficult to handle and therefore more difficult to find homes for.

I do hope they will have a way of grandfathering in people who are already experienced with caring for gliders, or they will end up with a city full of gliders in need of rescue. cry
