Oh Geez Randy! I hate when someone does that! I don't even need any copper or brass, but now that you've done that, I will go nuts until I know which it is I'm off to do a search
Ok, there's a cage maker that uses copper in their cages, so copper must be safe! Brass is too, probably!
Go with the copper Teresa!

[:"blue"] OK....time to get serious. But first, a trivia question. Know who makes those cages with the copper decorations and trays.....it's our old friends CCW!!!
And now for the $64 question....actually answer. I think the answer to your specific question is that copper and brass are equally safe as far as the gliders are concerned. However, there is another issue that you did not ask about. If your little project is going to be inside the glider cage and subject to marking by the animals, then there is another concern. The copper is going to discolor and stain quite a bit and start to look bad pretty quickly. The brass won't be as much of a problem; but it, too, will tarnish a little.(Even if your project is not subject to marking, the brass will probably look better longer than the copper will.) Depending upon exactly what you are doing, there are alternatives available including gold leaf which is not as expensive as you might think. If your problem has been resolved, great!! If you feel like you need some more info, email me and we can chat about it privately. I'm pretty good at keeping secrets!!! [/]

Thanks Randy. I do appreciate it. I was concerned about the tarnishing. Can it be coated with shallac?

[:"blue"] Teresa: Now you are asking me something I don't know. I can't remember what people use to keep their copper pots and kettles from tarnishing and whatever it is, it might not be safe for gliders, anyway. Maybe someone else on GC will have some help for you.
We know, of course, from all of the GC posts that shellac is safe for gliders so the question is whether it will keep the copper from discoloring. Since SGGA is a ways off, you might coat a piece with shellac and stick it in a cage for a month and see what happens. Not much help, I know. Sorry
I'll take a quick run around the Internet to see if anything pops up. Will let you know if anything interesting shows up. Seems to me that I have seen some clear aerosol spray coatings at Home Depot and the like; but you would have to check labels to see if they are "safe." I remember seeing some posts about "baby-safe" paints that were recommended for the wood in glider cages.....maybe there is a similar spray that is clear???[/]

Randy, thanks so much for you help. Really. And I like the suggestion about trying out a peice in the cage first.
