My joey eyes opened on Feb 6, which if I'm correct, would have made him about 10 days oop. I can't believe how fast they grow. They sure don't stay little long. Anyways, my question is, if I want to keep him with mom and dad, would he eventually want to mate with his mother? Also, how long befor he comes out of the nesting box? He loves to climb up the walls in the box, but dad is such a good sitter. Both mom and dad come out at night to play and eat while the little guy still stays behind. I'm afraid one day he will find his way out of the box. When will he start eating what they do? We haven't neutered the male yet, but are thinking about it as we don't want to many gliders. Thanks for your help.

A joey usually does not venture out on it own until around 45 days oop. Check out Joey Growth and development its a great guide to see were your joeys development is at and when they will start doing new things. As for trying to mate with his mom, yes it is a very good possibilty and would cause dad and son to fight. Your best bet would be to neuter him or seperate them.

I never saw the joey riding on the parents back. I don't ever see him out of the nesting box unless I take him out. They are very protective over him. I would say he's about 40 days oop, he has all his fur, he climbs very well, crabs quite loud. I just don't ever see him out in the cage. Should he be out climbing with his parents, are they being to protective? There are 2 holes in the nesting box that he could get out of at night while they are playing and feeding but for some reason, he stays in the box. They moved the nesting material in front of one of the holes, maybe so he couldn't see the hole. He seems normal to me. I'm just concerned when he should be out and moving in the cage. I went to the site above and it sounds like he should have been riding on mom or dad, I never saw that.

My Nickolas was 6 weeks oop before he came out of the nest box on his own.
Male joeys will start to sexually mature around 4-6 months oop so if you want to leave him with mom, he should be neutered at about 4 months old.

Also, there is a good chance your female could be pregnant already. Some gliders will mate again right after the joeys come oop. If she is pregnant (or has new joeys ip) you should look into having dad neutered too if you are wanting some population control.

I first saw joeys on their own at about 4 weeks OOP. It seemed like they would come out only in the dead of night while I was sleeping. And I never saw the parents carry them, unless I had the babies out and Mom would take them from me back to the nest.

Thanks for the advise. I definately want population control. I'm not in it for breeding, too much work. I will take Stitch, the father and have him fixed. Poor guy. Will this change his personality?
