Right now I only have my boy Cosmo. However, I would like to get him a girlfriend. I was supposed to before this, but it just has not worked out. I thought I would be fine because when I first got my glider I was told as long as I don't have 4 or more females I would not need a license. But someone else said differently. Does anyone here know for sure?

If you will only be getting him a girlfriend, then no you won't need a liscence. Do you plan on breeding multiple females at all? If not..then your fine smile

My husband and I have talked about getting a 2nd pair someday - but that wouldn't be for a few years it if did ever happen. We would first want to make sure we could find good homes for the babies and such. I can't ever see going over 2 pairs though - the cages we have for them are quite large and so too many pairs would end up being a not enough room issue. Plus I would want to make sure I have enough time to dedicate to each of them and my time free time is already split between my current glider and my horses.

If you have more than 3 intact females (of any species) then you need a breeders license (as the USDA sees it). So even if you are breeding only one pair of gliders, but have two intact female cats and an intact female dog, then you are supposed to have a license. Also, if you have a cage of female gliders (3+) and a couple of breeding pair, you should still have a license, because there are are more than 3 intact females (does that make sense, sorry if I over-explained it!)

That's a good question. My vet told me that you have to have a license to sell the joey(ies), no matter how many breeding females you have. Is that true? Maybe it's just an IL thing?

What is the "deal" in Illinois, Cindy?

When I lived their I spoke with the USDA, and it was the standard breeding female amount that requires a license, but they did not include domestic pets, becuase I had 5 cats at the time and they told me that did not count.

As a matter fact I wrote it all down, I believe I still have it, I'll dig thru my file cabinet tonite. smile

The USDA changed the law in 2005 nationwide to what sugarlope said. If you have more than 3 breedable females of ANY species in the home, you must be USDA licensed to sell your joeys.

This is all I could find, and this is per 2003.

To sell ANY suggies or give them away you needed a class "C" License, class "A" (I think was to breed 3 or more females) but did NOT include domesticated house pets dogs, cats ect. And I think the A, or B was for retail places, pet shop, swap sales ect. This is old, and it's a pretty beat up sheet I have had it for 4 yrs now..lol

My friend in Chicago was a breeder for 15 yrs, and has all sorts of cool pets, I'll call her tonite to see what's for what, and what's changed, she does the pet expo in chicago in March, you IL folks should go! It's a BLAST and their are some awesome critters up there!

Federal law, that is USDA laws and regulations state that if you have more than 3 breeding females of any species regulated by the USDA AND you are selling the offspring, then you must be licensed. This would be a class A breeder's license. If you are selling gliders for someone else who breeds them, you must have a Class B Broker's license.

As I put, this is FEDERAL, each state, county or city may have additional laws/regulations you have to follow as well.

According to the Virginia office, you only need a license if you have more than three breeding females. They specifically said "breeding" and not "intact". Of course, that doesn't mean they chose their words carefully...

Sorry, but USDA is Federal and the law applies in ALL 50 states. So, despite what they may have told you, the info is wrong frown

I am USDA Licensed, and live in IL. They don't care if they are domestic or exotic... if you have more than 3 breeding females, then you have to be licensed...

Although, I had to "argue" this. When I called the USDA they said that only exotics count. In other words 2 sugargliders & a dog doesn't count but 2 gliders & a hedgehog does. confused
Maybe that is just b/c I am in NY?

From what I am told if they are capable of breeding (ie intact) then they are a breeding female. Does not matter if they are actually producing.
