It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. My little sister has had a male glider for about a year now. As far as I can tell, she has taken very good care of him. Saturday afternoon my step mom called his name as she often does when she walks by his cage. He always comes and peeks out at her but this time he did not. She went to check on him and he was dead. He had been playing and eating a couple hours earlier. Upon further inspection they found that he had fuzzies from his fleece pouch lodged in his throat. He had suffocated or choaked on it. I have never heard anyone warn of this problem before. I have been making fleece pouches for some time now (I made hers) and have to say that I felt terrible guilt when I found out that it was the pouch! Fleece has a tendency to fuzz up into little balls and for some reason he decided to chew them off. I am not sure why he did this but he did and I am so sad! I checked my gliders pouch and sure enough there are fuzzies all over it. The only solution that I have thought of is to get a sweater shaver and shave off all the little fuzz balls every now and then. I did notice though that I used a different type of fleece on the inside of my pouch and it did not fuzz the same. So... I am now setting out to figure a way to create the most glider safe pouch that I can! My step mom did some deep research and found out that this has happened before.
I am sorry to ramble but I want everyone to know about the dangers of the loose fuzz on the pouches.
Thanks to all of you who read this and pass it on!

Thanks for caring! My little sister, Lilly is taking it hard. She is only 5 and my dad and step mom are of course the ones who take care of him but he is still hers. She is just like me and it breaks her heart to have a pet die. She has a lot of animals and tries to save every stray or hurt creature that she finds! I think she inherited that all from me.
I hope that it does at least help others to read this.

I am so very sorry, I know this had to be difficult to even write. I do thank you for sharing it though. When I recently bought some fleece, the lady who measured it out for me suggested washing it inside of a pillow case that was tied shut. She claims it prevents the pilling. Not sure if it works, I honestly forgot about it until I read your post. Also I have heard line drying them instead of using the dryer helps, but for those with many Gliders this may not be very feasible.

[:"green"]Amy,
Thank you so much for sharing this concern. I am so sorry for your sister's loss.
I do have one question... when you make pouches, do you know if the fleece you use is the "non-pilling" type? I always buy the non-pilling type and have not noticed any problem with the pouches developing fuzzies, so that is why I am asking. I will make sure that I minutely inspect all of my pouches, though, to double-check & be absolutely positive that they don't have fuzzies.
Thank you again for letting us know about this...

Amy,
I'm so sorry for your sister's loss. It must be very difficult for her. You shouldn't blame yourself you couldn't have known this would happen. I've never even thought about it until you posted this. So thank you for the warning.

I am sorry to hear about your sisters glider!!! I use a flannel and a fleece. My gliders LOVE the flannel. They are rarly in the fleece one any more. The flannel was just because they needed a pouch and I couldnt find fleece. I hope that she is doing better. If there is any thing I can do let me know.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Thanks for sharing your story as it could help to save many gliders' lives. As for the fleece- it does pill very easily if you don't buy anti-pill fleece. I noticed that in some of my pouches that are made without it . Another thing that really helps is hanging it up to dry as opposed to sticking it in the dryer. This isn't something I've ever thought about happening, so thanks so much for sharing. Again, I'm so sorry. Just know that you have tons of people here for you

I know your story can help save gliders in the future. since I did not see anyone post anything to this effect I wanted to share something that may also help..
I have never heard of anti-pill fleece or anything like that, so of course I have the same problem. For Christmas I asked for a lint-shaver. Its a small battery opperated thing that shaves those fuzzies off of material. Everytime I wash the pouches I use the lint-shaver before putting the pouches back in the cages. I was told that it was purchased at our local sewing store. I doubt they are hard to find. for those of us who are not material wise...the lint-shaver is great.

So sorry to hear your story. Your poor little sister must be devastated! I know how my sons are with animals. They are 7 and almost 5 so it touches my heart to think of how she must be taking this!
I too make most of my own pouches but I never put them in the dryer and have never had a pilling problem. Just some advise added with everyone elses.

You need to look up the link for the Rainbow bridge stories and tell your sister about it. It might help her a little bit.

I am so sorry for your and your sister's loss! But thank you SO much for sharing this story. I will soon be getting my pair of gliders, and I will be sure to check their pouches daily for fuzzies. *HUGS*

Amy,
I am so sorry for your loss. My son lost his pet hamster when he was 6 and I know what your sister must be going through. It is tough at that age...or any age..to lose an animal that you love.

Give her lots of hugs and kisses from all of us. When she can handle thinking of where her glider is now...maybe you might want to let her know he is playing at the Rainbow Bridge with my little Willow and all the other glider's that were so loved that passed away. Tell her wonderful stories of how they are happy and not sad like stray animals and sick animals can get. My son liked knowing his hamster was looking in on him sometimes and wanted him to be happy.

So sorry again for your loss.

Thanks so much for all of the hugs and nice encouraging words! I really appreciate it! My little sister Lilly is doing good. She is trying to get Dad to buy her a pair now! He says he will when he can afford it. I am going to buy a lint shaver for me and for her. That's what I told my husband right after it happened. I noticed that the material on the inside of my pouch is anti-pill but the outside is not. So at least I don't have to worry about the inside. Lilly's pouch was not anti-pill. I never knew that there was any such thing as anti-pill. I wish there were instructions on crafty things like fabric for newbies like me. Anyway, all is going well now. Screechy is in a happier place now I know!

This is so sad! Unfortunately, with anti-pill, I've noticed that if you wash it with things like towels & such (other pilling items) it will still pill. So, sorry to hear about Screechy!

I am so sorry. Are you sure there were no stuffed animals in the cage?

I am so sorry for your loss. For future reference it does help to wash fleece inside of a pillow case or one of those lingerie bags.

Just as a reply, yes I am sure that there were no stuffed animals in the cage. The pouch was the only item made of any fabric. She had washed her pouch several times but I have not washed my newest one that I made and it is already pilling. So I definately have to get the anti pill fleece and I will continue to shave mine with a sweater shaver.
