Hello, all! My little girl, Priscilla, is about one year OOP and I just noticed that her pouch looks funny. It has a pink piece sticking out that is around the size of the cloaca, but more pointy (if you can imagine). She is acting perfectly normal and hasn't shown me any signs of distress by cleaning it, etc. I looked on BMX Girl's anatomy page and she features a "relaxed pouch", but it looks different from what's going on. I've read about inverted pouches and bacterial infections in pouches...anyone have any thoughts? I'm sure I should probably make an appointment for the vet tomorrow to be safe. Gosh...great timing with the lack of money for a vet visit, but what can you do? I appreciate any imput.

Thanks,
Katey, Petrie, and Priscilla

Isn't that the way it always goes, when we don't have the money. When in doubt, vet visit doesn't hurt. Are you able to post a picture of Priscilla's pouch???

No, I actually don't have access to a camera this late....wish I did. The coloring of the tissue is really light pink, looks like it isn't irritated at all, so hopefully it is no big deal...it just worries me. I'll definitely be talking to the doc in the morning.

Ok- now I just checked in on her and her pouch looks normal again- everything seems to be back inside! Very interesting...has anyone ever experienced or heard of this happening???

Thanks,
Katey

Oh, gosh- it would be a shocker if she was pregnant!! Her cagemate is neutered and I've never seen him even the slightest bit interested in her in "that way". It was about the width of a cloaca, stuck out about maybe a centimeter, and was like an off-oval-ish shape. Any thoughts?

Thanks again,
Katey

She may have just been grooming, and a little piece turned inside out for awhile (inverted). Keep an eye on her, and if she shows an unusual amount of attention to it, it turns inside out in a place and doesn't go back, or becomes an unusual color (like dark pink/red), then I'd go in for a vet check.
HTH.

Thanks, Xfilefan. I'll be keeping an eye on her for sure. Since the tissue went back in and didn't look irritated, I hope it is just an after-effect of grooming, like you said. I appreciate your help.

[:"green"]Katey,
I agree with Jen that it was probably just inverted from grooming. My husband panicked about one of our females yesterday for the exact same reason. She had left part of her pouch out after grooming. She is perfectly fine & the pouch went back in after a while. Do plan to double-check it for a few days to make sure it doesn't change color or look irritated (as Jen recommended).

I have had this happen a couple of times with my oldest female glider. And, I totally freaked when it first happened as well. I gather what took place is they are cleaning their pouch and a bit of the skin stays out and is relaxed, and than later it goes back or is put back into place. First time it happened, we made a trip to the vet, of course by the time we got there it was normal and the vet thought I lost my mind! Ran some tests and realized than what happened. If it is anything darker than a light pink though I would take her in immediately.

umm right after joey came OOP I noticed what you just described to everyone on my girl. Im thinking maybe its a nipple because her pouch is so stretched out and the joey is nursing on it and it comes out? I could be totally wrong though!

My Joy's did this about a week ago but it looked like a little outty belly button so i kept good watch on it and it just went back to normal i make sure i look at her belly every day now just to be sure it's normal..
She sure did give me a scare when i first saw that even to the point i was beginning to dought she was a girl and maybe a accident neutred boy.. she was a rescue.. so it could have been the case.

Thanks to everyone for your replies, but now it seems that the little piece is out again! I noticed it very early this morning and it is still there now. I don't know if earlier it was hidden by fur when I thought it had gone away, but who knows? When the whole grooming thing happened, how long did it take for your gliders' pouch to go back to normal?

-Katey

P.S. Putting a call into the vet to talk to him in a couple of minutes.

Katey, if there is any way possible to get a pic, it would really help. So far, with what you are describing, it sounds like healthy tissue, if you are concerned, I'd take her to the vet to make sure everything is ok. Without a pic, and not being vets it's hard for us to help you.
Please, to ease your mind and know she's ok, call your vet!!!!:hug2

Hi again, everyone. I finally got some pictures to share of Priscilla's pouch so you can see what I'm talking about. These were taken a few hours ago. Oh- and I talked to my vet and he hasn't heard of or seen this in a glider before, so he just told me to keep an eye on it and make an appointment if it doesn't go back to normal...so, I'll be calling tomorrow for an appointment. I spoke to the breeder I got her from and she said to have the vet do a swab of her pouch and get a culture done. Any other suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Love,
Katey, Petrie, and Priscilla

That is exactly what my gliders pouch looks like. It somtimes is normal for a day or two and then it looks like that again. I took her to the vet on Friday and he looked and said that nothing is wrong with it.

Whenever I took Priscilla in to see my vet, he said he hadn't seen this before. But, he said it looked like healthy tissue and he cleaned it and just poked it back into her pouch. He told me it probably would come out again and it did a few days later. He said it looks like it may be a hernia, but he did not seem concerned about it. He said the only problems that she may have because of it is if she was going to be bred (which she is not) and that she may be more suseptible to injury in that area. I sent the pics to a vet in Houston that deals with many gliders to see what his opinion is, but I'm still awaiting a response. If anything new is learned, I'll post about it.

Thanks!

My vet said the same thing about ponchess's pouch and that he had never seen it before. I would really like to know what the vet who you are sending the photos to says. Please let me know.
