As I write this the hysterics have stopped but the tears haven't. The worst happened early this morning. Last night I was playing with my firat and favorite glider Petrie, I've only had him a few months but he is so sweet he made me love all gliders. I adopted him as a young adult when his original owner went to college. His sweetness made it impossible for me not to want to help other gliders so I am up to six already (rescues).
Anyway we had a wonderful time playing with the new feather teaser I got him,He did not want to go to his cage but I needed to get to bed so in he went, I told him his wife missed him, for some odd reason Amelia didn't want to play much. Anyway this morning my hubby was working the early shift. I got up and let the dogs out. After I brought them in I decided that at 6:30 the gliders would be up for some play time. As soon as I opened the door to the glider room I knew Petri had been out. He is the only one who climbs to the top of my computer desk and pushes everything off the top. I closed the door to keep the dogs out and started looking for him. I have a shelf under the cages where I store exta pouches and toys. I was sure I would find hin there. I had just finished looking when I heard a noise in the living room. I never thought an adult glider could have gotten through the small crack under the door but he had. I was too late. I found him dangling lifeless from the mouth of my Jack Russell Terrier. I held his still warm body praying that he was just stunned and would revive and crab me out, but he slowly grew cold. I knew that the puppy could not be trusted so I have been very carefull to keep him away from the gliders except under the most controlled of conditions, I thought that with time he would get used to them and ignore them like my old dog. Not carefull enough, I never thought a glider could make it through such a small space. I found out how Petrie escaped. When I closed the cage one of his climbing branches was up against the bottom of the door, it kept the bottom latch from closing, he was able to just squeeze out. Poor Amelia will miss him as much as I will. At least he got to have a mate for a little while befor he died. My husband was at work when I found him and couldn't leave so I called my Mother and she came over to be with me while I burried him. The pupply was so scard by my hysteria that he hid under the bed for an hour. I had screamed at him so bad. I can't really blame him though, he's just following his instinct, it was my responsibility to keep Petrie safe and I failed. I have to go now, I'm crying too hard to continue. I only wanted to post this to warn others. If you think they can't fit they can.

Oh Hon, I am so so terribly sorry, what an awful thing to have happened. Please dont be so hard on yourself, you did not mean for that to happen or cause it in any way....it was an accident.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, as I know how heart broken you are right now, I know it will help save anothers life.
Again, Im so very sorry...
Petri knew you loved and cared for him.
Hugs to you and prayers of comfort.

Dear Peggy - I know just how you feel, I too lost a joey to my dog and I still have trouble forgiving myself. I fell asleep on the couch after playing with the little one and when I awoke, my dog had "played" him to death. I never felt so helpless in my life. My first instinct was to blame the dog but as you said, he was not being hateful, just being a dog. I know it's oh so painful and I feel so badly for what you're going through. I have never told anyone this but wanted to share this with you because you have to know that accidents such as this can happen to anyone, just like they happened to you and to me. It is so sad and we can only learn from them. I know, without a doubt, that no animal will EVER be trusted around Bugsy except another glider. Please try to think only about the happy times and in time, believe me, it will get easier. Email (charlee@ev1.net) me if you want to talk some more - I'll be there for you just as I wish someone had been there for me those years ago.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Please know that you weren't to blame. Accidents can happen no matter how careful we are.

Petrie will always be alive and well in your heart.

That just breaks my heart. It's awful when you're so careful and something like that happens anyway. They always seem to do things you never think they could. I'm not surprised that it was a Jack Russell. They're hunters by nature. I have two miniature pinschers and they are not allowed around my babies as they are the same way.

I am so sorry about Petrie, my heart hurts for you. I too lost one of my sweeties just a week ago and its as hard as losing family. I would like to be able to tell you it gets better in a week but I won't lie ... I still cry every day. I cannot make it better but I can grieve with you as I am sure everyone else here who has ever lost a baby to accident (and that is all it was) will. We need to consider a therapy group for miserable people like us, I know I need it. Seems it really helps to talk about it.

Thank you for posting this, though I know how hard it was. Recently there have been a few posts by people who think it's perfectly safe to have dogs and gliders out together. You've done a great service by posting your story -- maybe others will take note and realize that dogs and gliders really don't belong in the same room together.

My heart goes out to you. Thank you for sharing the story.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss...I know a piece of your heart is gone too. I cant say that I know how you feel, but because of you I will be EXTRA careful about closing my gliders cages because i have three dogs whom I would NEVER trust around the gliders and I would be in pieces if it was me (as you seem to be as well). Thank you for sharing your story and in NO way was it your fault. Sometimes life has a way of letting the unexpected happen. I am so sorry for you and my heart goes out to you. {Glider hugs and kisses for you }

Thank-you all so much for your support, it means the world to me right now, As soon as my husband got home from work today he took the door off the glider room and added a piece of wood to the bottom. It is a bit hard to open but it not even the tiniest joey could get under it now. He's a typical guy, words come hard, he just wanted to fix it for me. He's wonderfull too, just like all of you. Thank-you again.
