Being how corn is high in phophrous does that mean that "LIGHT corn syrup" is to?

Admittedly, I sometimes use this as a quick substitute when I accidently run out of honey.

However, I never give my babies any kernel corn whether it be frozen or from an exotic dried mix.

I really couldn't tell ya, but I do know that it's definately NOT a substitution for honey. Also, it's perfectly fine to give corn, as long as it doesn't make up a large portion of their diet. What kind of "exotic dried mix" are you refering to? And what diet are you feeding?

I'm not sure about the phophrous. I think the proccess breaks everything down to basic sugars.I just found this (I do not know the creditability of it) dangers of HFCS

peterfranks,

WOW! Thanks for the link! If corn syrup is bad for us, then it is definitely bad for our babies. I will look into the issue more thoroughly tonight. Thanks again! I sincerely appreciate it!

Monster,

I know "diet" can easily become an "flamed" topic among the community, but I have been feeding my gliders the "Original Leadbeater's Mix" for over two (2) years now.

http://www.skinhorse.net/gliders/syd_diet.html

Warm Water 450ml (2 cups)
Honey 450ml (2 cups)
Shelled boiled eggs: 3
High-Protein baby cereal 75g (1 1/4 cup)
Sustagen (Vitamin Supplement): 3 teaspoons.

NOTE: I do NOT use Sustagen as my vitamin supplement. I use REP-CAL Herptivite w/Beta Carotene Multivitamins (navy blue label) and REP-CAL Phosphorus-Free Calcium W/ VIT.D3 Ultrafine Powder (neon pink label.)

Also, I add 2 1/2oz jar of Stage 2 Heinz chicken baby food. Quanty: 2 jars.

This added ingredient is to help "boost" the protien that may be lacking in the High-Protein baby cereal 75g (1 1/4 cup.)

As far as the "exotic dry mix" goes, I ONLY use it sparingly as TREATS. It is NOT a staple to ther diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the staples.

The "exotic dry mix" is called Brown's Extreme Fruit & Nut. It is formulated strictly for exotic parrots and not designed for human consumption.

However, I did some thorough investigating of the product before purchasing it and discoved that it contained much of what I dehydrate here at home. (I own a dehydrator for my fruits, preferably to make banana chips out of.)

There are absolutely no additives or preservative. The nuts i.e. peanuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, brazil nuts (I eat those. They are WAY too big for my babies.) are shelled and contain NO salt.

The rest of the ingredients are: Raisins (Golden & Dark), Pineapple, Papaya, Banana Chips, Apple Rings, Apricots, Mangos, Coconut shavings, Carrots and Pumkin Seeds.

As occasional treats, my babies love it. However, I tend to feed them more of the dried fruit than the nuts, due to the high fat content.

I would be wary about adding babyfood to make up for the protein in the high protein baby cereal. Are you just shooting in the dark hoping that's the right amount of protein? Have you crunched the numbers to make sure of it? That could throw off ALL the ratios and I assume the calcium ratios would be affected the most by the extra ingredients.

Also, most seeds are toxic and should not be fed at all. Nuts are super high in fat and should only be fed sparingly.

As for the corn syrup, I have to agree with Gina that it wouldn't be a good substitute for honey.

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS VERY BAD FOR ANYONE! and all LIGHT corn syrup has it. Dark corn syrup does not. Sorry- I have some severe stomach issues personally, and HFCS is in MOST mass produced foods and was one of the items I removed from my diet to make myself healthy- amazingly, removing that MSG, Carageenan (a relative of MSG), and Dairy (which I was unknowingly allergic to) has made me healthier not just stomachwise. From further research- the issues with HFCS seem to be common and yet because people want sweet things cheap it is still used. even most storebought breads contain it. I would never give it to an animal though, especially a small one. Something that hurts many human tummies can't possibly be good for them.

Amie

Amie,

Sweeie I truly enjoy your postes. Thanks for this one (1) too.

As I told peterfranks I was completely unaware of the significant danagers of high fructose in light corn syrup. I suppose there are many individuals that are just as oblivious as I was.

Unless you develop health related problems from HFCS people may never understand how dangerous it is or unless they find out by accident (like I have.)

I have used light corn syrup all my life without complications, especially with pancakes, but that is going to change, starting immediately.

I am extremely aware of additives i.e. sugar, salt, etc.,

preservatives i.e. Potassium Sorbate, Titanium Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide BHA, BHT, Citric Acid, Potassium Chloride (a commercial dietary salt substitute) Calcium Sulfate (non-sodium salt of calcium), etc.

artificial flavors and colors in a lot of human AND pet food i.e. cat food, dog food, etc. just to name a few and NONE of these were listed on the "Nutrition Fact" label. Which is why I thought Light Corn Syrup was sufficient to use.

I thought wrong. Thanks again!

SouthernBell,

If you were referring to PUMPKIN SEEDS they are NOT toxic to Sugar Gliders (as long as you do NOT fry-cook them or add salt) and I DID mention that I used nuts treats sparingly due to the high fat content!

If you happen to know the 2 1/2oz jar of Stage 2 Heinz chicken baby food (quanty: 2 jars) Ca:P ratio, I would absolutely LOVE to cross-reference the information, for it is the same amount required in the BML diet.

The light corn syrup was an one (1) time emergency substitute when I accidently run out of honey, that otherwise did not know was harmful to humans let alone Sugar Gliders.

However, I have successfully received an answer to that issue and will never again use that ingredient as a quick substitute.

I have been meaning to ask this.

I just recently switched one (1) of my male gliders to the Darcy diet and most (if not all) glider guardians agree that any form of corn syrup is not ideal for sugar gliders.

However, on the back of the ingredients label of every can/bottle of Ensure "corn syrup" is listed as the third ingredient in this particular product!

If corn syrup is harmful to sugar gliders should glider guardians consider discontinuing the Darcy diet?

Personally, I do not know what exactly to do. The Darcy diet is such a WONDERFUL diet with awesome reviews of success, but at the same time glider owners look down on corn syrup as a diet ingredient.

I sincerely like the Darcy diet, but am leery of corn syrup.

Any comments?
