Thanks so much for posting this wonderful list. I noticed that Watercress is missing the 2nd part of the ratio. I assume that it is 2.0:1

It appears that several of the fruits are healthier with the skins than without. How many gliders actually eat the skins. Joy & Noel seem to ignore them.

Excelent post! Very helpful. Where did you get this list or where did they get the information/statistics on these?

Tedscastle,

Yes the Ca:P ratio for Watercress is 2.0:1. Sorry about that.

Teresa,

I believe Helen posted them in the Glider Central's diet & Nutrition links.

I got the list by using the group's search engine.

However, I am not 100% certain if the following web addresses are the links in which Helen found the Ca:P ratios or not (I have not had the time to compare yet), but I am going to list them here anyway.

A word of caution on choosing from the list. Although the C:P ratios are listed for the fruits and vegetables there other factors that need to be considered when picking them.
Just as an example. Although Spanich is listed as having a positive C:P ratio when you factor in the oxalic acid spanich contains it offsets the effect of the positive ratio. Oxalic acid blocks the absorbtion of calcium and forms tiny crystals that can lead to kidney problems.

I just used spanich as an example. You need to do a little research on any item you choose. Selecting food items is much more complicated than simply looking at the C:P ratio. Here is a good place to start searching for nutritional values of different foods:

Lots of information.

Based on these numbers, does anyone have an "ideal" mixture of Fruits and/or Veggies that would mix best with BML? I want my babies to have the best diet possible and, considering the comments like the Spinach/Kidney Problems, I am curious what fruits and veggies would be best for my babies without wicked side effects.

Your basic vegetables are best. Green peas, corn, carrots & green beans. If you use frozen vegetables pick the lima beans out of the mix. Most gliders will eat very little of the carrots. Your fruits should be the common fruits you find in most markets. Be leary of exotic fruits and citrus.

Ooops! I haven't been picking out the lima beans. Just outta curiosity, why should they be picked out? Have I done something that is gonna cause harm to my lil furrbutts? I'm worried now.

Lima beans can cause gas.

[:"blue"] I'd like to add another comment to the point that Charlie was making. Looking "ONLY" at the Ca:P ratio of a food doesn't give you the full story. You must also consider the actual amount of Ca that is available from a particular food. As an example, collard greens have a Ca:P ratio of 14.6:1; but a cup of greens contains only 52± mg of calcium. Turnip greens, on the other hand, only have a Ca:P ratio of 4.5:1; but a cup of turnip greens has 104 mg, of calcium. In this example, it turns out the food with the better ratio actually does "NOT" provide as much calcium as the food with the lower ratio. Don't get fooled by looking only at ratios......you need to be sure that you know the full story!! [/]

That's right. I agree fully! It's a biological principle called bioavailability...! Simply due to the state in which the substance (in this case calcium) exists, it has a direct effect on how the substance is absorbed and utilized by a given organism.
