After reading so much about gliders loving larger cages, I decided to build one for Joy & Noel. Their home is custom built to fit in a corner space in our family room. They love it more and more as I add toys.

to Home Depot for the necessary supplys: 2x2's, screws, staples, coated hardware cloth, hinges, pastic chain & shellac. The strange angles were the only challenging part .

If you build your own, make sure to keep the deminsions of the room doorways in mind. Mine barely fit.

Very nice cage! A job well done!

I have a question, though. How do you clean the bottom of the cage of their droppings and food? I don't see a pull-out tray at the bottom.

The pull-out tray is still not finished. There is cage material on the bottom that allows everything to fall to the bottom. The cage sits on a footing that is part of the room. So right now, everything falls onto the newspapaer that sits on the floor. I still have to build the pan that fits underneath the cage.

Just a thought...I wonder if you can find a shower pan that will fit in there. I bet Home Depot would have a few sizes. The shape of the cage reminded me of the shower we plan on putting in our bathroom.

Great job!

You did a beautiful job!! When I buy my new house, want to come build one for me???

Seriously, that is a very nice looking cage. More of a furniture look then a cage.

so much for the compliments! I would love to build one for everyone. I have learned so much from everyone at GC, it would be nice to pass it on. It's just too bad we live so far apart.

I don't have the receipts, but I think that it was probably around 1
$100 without the toys. i'm sure that there is an extra $100 in that area. Anyone with a little woodworking experience could handle the project themselves.

That is a VERY nice cage. Is it easy to clean? I am working on building a cage and I was thinking the wood would be hard to get clean.

Can I ask how you will be making a pull out tray? I plan on building your cage.. but I'm not sure about a pull out tray. Thanks! BTW it looks beautiful!

Wow, you did an awesome job. I'm making a cage very soon, I just saved the money to do so. It's going to be 2x2x5"3 It's going be so awesome. the cage they have right now is very elegent looking but small, 1"6x1"6x3....I'm going to sell it (it'll make really good money because it's very elegent and made out of copper) and then by a cheaper one that's a little bigger, for when I go places. Then I'll have a bunch of money left over! Once again awesome job!

Well, mine is a little different in that the back 2 sides are lifted off the floor by a 9" footing that is part of the house. You would probably have to see it to understand. Basically, I am building a box that fits underneath the open section. Since the cage will stay in place on the footing, I can just pull the box out to empty and clean.

If this cage was to sit flat on the floor, I would have the cage sit on a pedestal with a drawer. You may also find some kind of a drain pan(shower pan listed above) and build the cage to those dimensions. The odd shape would create a few problems. You would probably need a couple of drawers.

Also remember to Shellac everything wood. That way you can clean the wood parts.

If you want, maybe I can take a bunch of detailed pictures to give you a better idea.

What kind of wood did you use, and how did you get all pieces to be perfectly straight? I recently built a similar cage and all the pieces were warped a little so it was tough getting them to fit together right.

I just used regular 2x2's from Home Depot. We did however search through a large portion of the stack to find the straightest pieces.
