I got a suggie today, and my dad cut a branch from our ELM tree and put it in his cage. Is this kind of branch okay? Also, if it is safe, is it alright for it to have the little twiggy stems sticking out? Should I cut those off and leave the thicker parts of the branch? Thanks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

as far as I'm aware, ceder is not a good wood for suggies
another thing to be concerned a/b is the fact that if you take limbs from trees outside they might have gotten chemicals on them, such as an insecticide, which would be harmful to gliders

Yes, get rid of the cedar! Pine, cedar and other "aromatic" trees are not safe. Go for hard woods like oak. I think there's a link to safe trees somewhere among the green buttons up at the top of the page.

elm isn't on the safe list or the toxic list, so I wouldn't let my gliders have it personally there is still the issue of pesticides on/in the wood, which is another reason I wouldn't use it

K - I just talked to Peggy - Elm is safe. Go ahead & cut off all those little sharp twigs and wash the heck out of it with soap & water. Then rinse it really well. Then let it dry out for at least a day before giving it to them.

About Oak, really? That was the only one I was pretty sure would be okay. Where is the list of woods that are okay or not? I looked at the toxic plants list from the green button link above, but it didn't seem to list trees. reject5grl, I bet the confusion came in because there is a such thing as a "Cedar Elm", but it's not related to cedar trees. It just got the name because it tends to grow among cedars. I wouldn't think pesticides on trees would be that likely. There's not that much reason to spray way up in the trees, unless you have some strange infestation, or I guess if it were in a fruit grove. Just regular backyard trees shouldn't have pesticide in them. If the branches come from your property or your uncle's, you or he would probably know if any pesticide had been sprayed up there.

Pepper, yes, Oak is a bad wood. Beautiful, but bad. It contains tannins in it which are not a good thing.
However, with you being in Texas, you have tons of mesquite trees you can pluck branches from! Just make sure to wash them off really good and than a good rinse and allow to airdry for 24 hours.
It is recommended to wash all branches not only due to the pesticides which could be on them, but also the parasites and the diseases that some trees and plants may carry.
Another safe wood one could use is Poplar or Birch.
There have been different view points on Dogwood and I believe RedBud trees are safe. Cottonwood trees are another good one, I like to hide mealies in the bark of a branch I put in the cage! Getting a bigger *stump* to put in the glider room to do this with! Ahh Enrichment methods we come up with!
But yes, to get back on the question that brought this thread to life, yes, Elm trees are safe as long as they are cleaned real good.
