Ok, so I've been looking at all kinds of stuff on this site trying to learn before I get my next 3 family members smile And I don't know what this Het stuff is?? Sometimes 100% sometimes 66%, what does this mean?? I really like the leus, but to make baby leus, what do the parents need to be??

Thanks!!

Go to my website it talks about what the het means. My site talks about albino but it is the same for leus. On the left click on sugar glider genetics. I hope this helps. If not let me know.

Roxanne,

It might help if you correct your signature and put the right website address in it.

thegliderhouse dot com is not correct

Yea, I found your post right after I posted mine actually! I understand genetics really well, and I was wondering if anyone knows the actual genetics? I'm assuming that Het stands for heterozygous, so they would carry one dominant (non leu) gene and one recessive (leu) gene... Is that right?

I'm just trying to figure out what 66% is? And if you buy a 66% leu het, it's possible that this glider has actually no recessive leu gene at all, right? It just MIGHT be because of it's parents, but it might have just gotten the plain grey gene instead... is this correct??? So confusing!!

Basically, my question is this: If you want to breed Leus, you need to breed leu-leu; leu-100%; or 100%-100%, right? Obviously those pairings would give different ratios of leu joeys, but that's the only way for sure to get leu babies right?

Breeding leus or 100% leu hets with anything less might never ever give you leu joeys because even if the other mate has a % of leu in it's 'name' it might actually have no leu gene at all???

Het does stand for heterozygous.

Leucistic is an autosomal recessive trait. I'll use L for dominant and l for recessive. To have a leu phenotype, your glider must be ll.

When people say 66% leu het, it means that there is a 66% chance that the glider is Ll, or carries the gene for leucistic. So there is a 33% chance it does not carry the l gene at all.

To get a leu, there are several things you could do.

You could breed two leus (ll) for 100% chance of having all leu offspring. Most breeders stay away from this because leus are so rare there is a concern with inbreeding and other possible deleterious genetic effects. There are some that worry that breeding leu to leus may create health problems or sterility in the line, and some leu owners have reported noticing that their leus seem to have weaker immune systems. This has not been subjected to any rigorous scientific study or statistical analysis though.

You could breed two leu hets (Ll x Ll) and approximately 1/4 of the babies would be leus, and 1/2 of the babies would be leu hets. Any gray babies from this pairing would be sold, I believe, if my math isn't fuzzy, as 66% leu hets, because there is a 2 in 3 chance that they carry the l allele and a 1 in 3 chance that they are LL and have no chance of producing a leu.

Hope this helps. thumb

See here I get a little confused again..lol

I thought if you breed two 100% Lue Hets together their grey joeys would be 100% het as well.

But of the 1 out 3 grey babies and not knowing which one would be what, I can see how they would be considered 66%

Am I way off here?

Thanks Jen, your post is really helpfull, even though my head gets all foggy with genetics smile

Jen: Thank you! It makes sense now! :):)

So, if you have Ll and Ll parents (100% leu hets) their babies could be ll; LL; Ll x2, right? So the ll is leu, and the three others would be phenotypic greys (but two of them would carry the leu gene), so all three of them would be 66% leu hets, right?? So it's possible that if you purchase a 66% leu het, you have a LL genotype and it will never produce leu babies... Am I right??

So my next question is: Why would anyone invest in a 66% leu het if you might have no leu gene at all? I understand breeding leu-leu would be probably cause genetic problems from small gene pool. So wouldn't the best scenario be breeding 100% leu het- 100% leu het, so that at least you have a 1/4 chance for sure of getting leus?

Cindy, in order for a glider to be a 100%, they need one parent who is actually a leu wink

Oh Gosh...Becki that's right!! Duhh..lol Off I go to read more about the Lue! roflmao

As for breeding 100% Het with 100% that always did make more sense then Lue to Lue anyways IMO.

When I do get into this, I am going to breed a pair out to another color like WF for instance to help this gene pool out thumb I do want my own Lue of course... wink
