Im a new user on here and need some help already! I went into my room yesterday and notcied that Bandit and Crystal were on the floor of the cage, (Bandits 1 year and 5 months, Crystal would have been about 1/2 years) I took them out individually and was holding them for a while. Bandit has been suffering from calcium deficiency for the past 8/9 months but is on medication for it. I noticed Crystal was making no attempt to do anything she was just sat on the floor with her head down, at 10pm last night she was worse and I said to my Mum that she needed to go to the vets now, but my vet is on holiday and there are no other vets around that treat sugar gliders. I was so worried that she wasnt going to make it throught the night that I sat next to the cage all night checking her and giving her water from a dripper, gradually she became worse and worse and she started having what I thought was fits, she would suddenly roll over on her side go really tense and clench her feet so Id pick her up and just reassure her and eventually she would calm down. Over night she had roughly 10 of these, anyway I had to go to school so I made my Mum go in and check her every half an hour and ring me if anything happened. When I got home I went straight upstairs and just sat there waiting for her to come out of the nest box, slowly she crawled out and just sat there again, over a 10 minute period she had had another 2 of these 'fits' so I made my mum ring the local vet just to see if they could diagnose what was wrong with her. We took her round, they injected her with antibiotics, gave her liquid and gave us some drops to give to her regularly. Just as we were about to leave she went still in my hands and I brought her out of the pouch, and she died in my hands, the vet checked her over again while I waited outside because I was too upset, she had just stopped breathing whilst I was holding her. I loved her so much, I was never as close to her as I was to Bandit, but thats because I had him since he was a baby, when I first got Crystal she would bite etc, but she calmed down. She was always so active and healthy and this suddenyl happened. Im now worried for Bandit, I dont know what to do, Im comforting him and stroking him etc but hes wandering round the cage as if hes looking for her. Do you think I should get another glider for him, or should I concentrate on him getting throught his calcium deficiency with just me for now? Please help and sorry for such a long post.

I'm so sorry for your loss. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> If it hasn't been very long that Crystal passed I'd have a necropsy done on her so you'll know what it is in case it's contagious. You may can prevent anything from happening to Bandit with a necropsy on Crystal. I know it sounds odd, but if it hasn't been very long since she passed, put her into the refrigerator until you can get her to the vet for the necropsy.

As for getting another glider....I would be more concerned with making sure that Bandit doesn't have the same illness that Crystal passed from. Will your vet be back from Holiday soon? If not you may try calling around to find another glider vet to see Bandit.

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

This is really sad to read. I am so sorry about your loss.

As to the remaining glider...my suggestion is to get him well before you get another glider. HLP takes several months to correct and then only with a good diet and meds and lots of love and patience.

The fits were seizers which are usually a seconday issue from an infection or parasitic problem. I do not know if your vet did a direct fecal with a cytology from Crystal...it sure would have helped had he been able.

So...as to the remaining glider...he should be vet checked again....needs to have a direct fecal with a cytology. This will let you know wither or not he possibly has a bacterial or parasitic issue.

Also...what diet are you feeding your gliders at night?

I'm not sure if this applies...but a little while ago I rescued a kitten from the dumpster behind my work. She was covered in fleas and only about two months old. We tried everything we could to get the fleas off without poisoning her, but couldn't. We hand fed her milk replacer and stayed up with her for two weeks until she died. Before she passed she started getting very lethargic, unresponsive, and would occasionaly stiffen and cry a little bit. The vet told us that because of the fact that she was so weak from near starvation and the fleas, she had relitively no iron in her system, very thin blood...in my experience tremors and stiffening followed by death are signs of dietary deficiancy.

I'm sorry for your loss but you should try and find out what went wrong and keep your eyes on Bandit for now. You can think about getting him another friend later.

Thanks for all the replys. I know it might be contagious but I dont think I could let anything be done to Crystal now, as I blame myself anyway Id rather just let her rest now. They both had an appointment with their vet on Monday but its only Bandit now and Im going to ask her to do a full health check on him to eliminate any problems there could be. Im going to ask for calcium drops that can go in his water aswell as ones I give him from a dropper and anything that can get him better as fast as possible as I couldnt cope with losing him aswell. The diet they were on was just a mixture of fruits such as apples, pears, figs, kiwi, mango, grapes, pomegranates, banana, avacados etc with a supplement sprinkled on. They also had mealworms everynight and a few crickets each once a week Im also going to ask the vets what else I can do for Bandit to make sure he doesnt suffer from losing Crystal too bad. Anything else that anyone knows of to help Bandit? Thanks
