Last night I checked on my gliders out in the glider room about midnight. A few gliders were running in their wheels. I heard a baby crab and looked up and saw Binky with her baby on her back inside a wheel and just laying there. Thought nothing of it as the overhead light was on and just thought Binky was waiting for me exit the room. All looked well.

For some unknown reason....I was up at 7:30 am. Went out to the garage to get a Coke and while there decided to check on the gliders in my glider room. Looked at the cage where B.J. and Binky reside...baby was inside the wheel and appeared to be walking and parents were in bed. I thought perhaps(baby who is just 4 weeks oop.) did not know how to get out of the wheel so I offered my hand. She came out but one leg did not. After several attemps and with the baby crabbing now and also biting me....I finally figured out something was diffenately was wrong. Her foot or leg was caught. The wheel would turn from her other legs being free...but one being caught.... meant she had her leg somehow pinned between the spindel and the cover....so I thought. Once I got the wheel off the cage... and popped the cover off...I could see the problem. About an inch of skin and fur was caught between the bushing and spindel of the wheel. Did not want to pull as I was afraid I would tear her tiny leg off or worse yet...more of the skin. I doused the leg with olive oil but that did not work. From there I knew we needed help.

Got dressed and then took the little one with the wheel still on her leg...to the Grain Valley Fire Dept. If they can get people out of mangled cars.... I was counting on the idea they could get the wheel off of my little ones leg. The firemen were so kind. Several went and got some wrenches and a cutting tool. Then we discovered ...by turning the wheel counter clock wise we got most of the skin out but leg was still stuck. With the wrenches they were able to loosen the nut on the back side of the wheel and within minutes we had the little gliders leg free.
You have no idea how releived I was. I thanked everyone for their help.

Returned home and after re-examining the leg...the skin is ripped off the front side of the lower leg below the knee. She must have got pinched and with the wheel turning...it sort of grabed onto the fur and then pulled the skin between the bushing and the rod.

Called the vet and could not get help till 11:30. So, put the baby back with the parents for a couple of hours so she could feed. At 11:15 went to get the little one to go to the vet and found her curled up into a ball on the bottom of the cage. Dehydrated and cold.

vet sedated her, cleaned the wound and then glued it and a shot of fluids. I am concerned with how he treated it but will have to wait and see what happens. From experience....the skin may die and thus if this happens it will not heal.

I hand feed the little one and now am unable to put her back with the parents. vet feels the adults will try to remove the glue from the wound thus making a worse problem. So for now, back to hand feeding. This little baby girl is so sad looking....her ears are flat from being depressed from the pain of her injury. She still has olive oil all over her back end from me trying to free her leg. Have given her some pain med. but it will take a bit to work.

Only time will tell how the leg will heal. On my way now to Hallmarks for a big box of Chocolates... for the firemen at Grain Valley Fire Dept. As for the wheel...it is permenantly retired.

Ohhhh, Judie, Prayers being sent your way! It just really reinforces checking on them frequently and not EVER letting too much time go by without making sure they are ok! Those firemen surely deserved that box of chocolates! I hope she is ok! Give her lot's of love, and we are sending lot's of prayers!
At least she is 4 weeks oop, a little easier to hand feed, and a little better than if she was only a week or so, at least she's had the benefit of a a month's worth of mom's milk! I do hope she is ok, I know her chances are about as good as they can get being with you!

Oh, it just breaks your heart when you see your human child hurt, and for me, it does the same when a furr child is hurt. Poor little thing. I will pray that your baby has a speedy recovery w/o any ill effects and is also able to emotionally recover from his trauma. I am sure he is in the best of hands with you Judie.

Hi Judie!! How's your little one doing? Quick thinking on the fire department deal, I don't think I would have even through of that. Great going
Oh, Java is doing great and growing like a weed.

Little one had a rough night. Became dehydrated again and did not eat much at all yesterday. Than at 3 am she was excessively thirsty which was attributed to being dehydrated. I feed her and then followed it with water....

This morning she is a little more perked up. Is eating better and has finally pooed and urinated.
Leg...very sore. Glue still somewhat in place...skin is really dry feeling like hard dried skin. Not sure if it is the glue or the skin is dead. To keep her warm I put her in a zippered pouch with a window with several pieces of cut fleese and took her to bed with me.

I did try to put her in with her parents and sibling but it did not work. Mother did not want her...dad tried chewing on the leg to take off the area of skin that is glued. SO, had to remove her.

She is going to fine...but the skin may come off of the leg if it was damaged. If this should happen...then the dead tissue would need to be removed. Bradley is out of town till next week so will have to wait till then for her to give me an openion. The vet who did the emerg. care is not very knowledgeable about gliders and has his own way of treatment. But emerg care was given and for now that is all I can ask for. If a further problem develops I just hope it does not happen till Bradley is back in town.

If I can keep her hydrated and monitor for possible infection....and stay on top of things as they develope....she should be fine.

Keep the prayers coming this way. Prayer is a powerfull tool. I Thank each of you from the bottom of my heart.
