I have a one year old male suger glider named Loki. He was getting depressed so we got him a mate Pandora. He was so thrilled to get her and she loved him very much. However, today I found that he had brutally murdered her in their nesting box. They had been introduced to each other 6 months ago and seemed to get along fine. He has always been more agressive and she was always rather domisle. I am heartbroken and have no idea what caused this BRUTAL attack. He has been biting for the last few months but I figured that was due to maturing. He didn't want to come out and play as much as Pandora did. My husband yelled at him and when I finally got home I tried to talk to him. Loki seems pretty sad about it. I am so mad at him though--I just don't know why he would do it. If anyone has any insight please let me know so I can learn to forgive Loki. They are are children and it is so hard to have one of your children kill the other. I'm just lost...

OMG! I am so sorry!!! I've never heard of grown gliders killing one another! I hate to say it, because I know that you are going through a terrible, terrible loss, and I wish there was something that I could do , but are you sure that he killed her? I don't know what you found in the nest box, but there could be other possibilities. For now, I would watch Loki, if he seems to be acting strange I would take him to the vet, I mean if he killed his mate, there could be something seriously wrong with him... Be careful!

Please keep us updated!

Im so sorry...
what an awful thing to have to go through...

Im sorry I dont know what to tell you or have any really great advice...
If it was me, I would take him to the vet and get a check-up... if thats all clear, then more than likely its some sort of behavioral problem, that may need lots of Love and lots and lots of patience to correctheart . He may always be somewhat the way he is...it might just be his personality as hes gotten older ... too- even though this happened after they had already been together for a few months, there may be a possibility that he may be more of a lone glider....
I do know of a glider that is very old, that cannot be put with a mate...he gets excited and lives with them for a few months, then kills them for some reason? It happened more than once till the owner gave up and let him remain alone...and just spent lots of time with him and kept him stimulated with lots to do....
I suppose there could be several reasons why this happened to you... Im so sorry...Hugs to you... (I dunno.... wish I knew something to say to help....)

I am so sorry that something like this has happened to you!! But like everyone else, I'm really not sure why he would have killed her; and I do agree you should get him to a vet. I'm so sorry. You must be going through so much heartbreak right now..

Athena - I feel so badly for you!! I know your heart is shattered and yet you don't know why this happened. Like everyone else, I wish I had some knowledge as to why. Maybe BMXgirl is right on - he is just a lone glider personality? Try the vet visit just in case and try to forgive the little guy. He is probably lonely now also - poor guy. I'm so very sorry.

I'm afraid I have no pearls of wisdom either for this behavior, and my heart goes out to you.

I did have glider that would possibly have gone this far because he gave plenty of warning. He was wonderful when it came to mating, but then became extremely abussive once the joeys were in the pouch to the point that he had to be separated from her. After having this happen twice I decided to leave him as a "lone" glider which didn't seem to bother him in the least.

Some gliders just do better as an "only" or "lone" glider, and we will probably never know why.

One thing you can be sure of ... I was definitely not your fault.

I am so sorry to hear of this happening. It must be a terribe thing to go through. Pets can be like children and it must hurt so much to have one of them do this to the other one. I don't know what to say other than time will heal your pain. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can forgive your little boy.

I'm so sorry for you. I lost a glider to murder too but the murderer in my case was a dog, so I guess that is a lot easier to accept and explain. Love and good thoughts to you, please forgive him, I know he didn't mean to do it.

We had a similar situation. We had a female glider who seemed lonely and got a mate for her. From the beginning, the male seemed a little mean. They got along fine, tho. He didn't care for human contact, but loved getting out of the cage. He would head straight for my husband's ears, and bite them. It got to the point that no one would feed the gliders except for my husband. When they mated, Snickers killed the offspring, until we realized what was happening, and separated the mother and father. Then we had some survivors. When the babies were weaned, and quite a bit older, we put Orbit back in Snickers' cage--the cages were on top of each other, and they seemed like they really wanted to be together. A couple of days later, Orbit was dead!! We had two babies, so we found a home for Snickers. We explained the situation, and told the new owner that we believed that it was best if Snickers lived alone. They seem to be happy. Snickers didn't work out for us. We still have the two offspring, tho, and two other gliders. We love them dearly.

I called a vet and they said sometimes they will just do that for no reason. Loki has been moping around for the last 2 days. When we decorated her coffin (their nesting home) he came out with little perked up eyes. We explained she wasn't coming back and Loki made some snifiling crying noise. Now he is lathargic and when I pet him he makes some shaken motion (violent shake as well as the scared shake). We think we will keep him as a lone glider and give him a fake rat (per the vet) to cuddle with. We aren't mad at him anymore- he's our first baby and we aren't even sure what really happened. We loved them both soooo much. I want to have more suger gliders though so perhaps we will start a new pair. Last night Loki slept in Pandora's special hut--I think he wanted to smell her because he has been smelling himself.

I am so glad you were able to forgive Loki - he sounds sad also. I think the fake rat, rabbit, whatever, is a good idea. That and lots of human contact should fulfill his need for companionship, I hope. Bugsy was a fine, happy, healthy lone glider before I got Marge so I know it can be done. I spent a LOT of time with him and he was always pretty spunky. Good luck to you and to Loki!!

This is just so sad. I'm glad you were able to forgive Loki. Give your little guy lots of love and attention. He also lost someone he loved and the grieving process is hard for all.

My thoughts are with you!

I took Loki to the vet today. As I was reading your responses and holding him I noticed that he was chewingon his balls. I called the vet and they said they could get him in on Thursday. After reading the self mutilation section I called and said I was brining him in TODAY! It turns out that he had a urinary tract infection. THey also said that sometimes when a mate dies the other glider will bite the body to try and waken their mate. I am going to beleive that this was the case. Most likely Pandora also had an infection and self mutilated also. Loki is staying overnight and is on some antibiotics. I really appriciate the oppertunity to talk with you, it certainly helped and maybe it will help some others to know that gliders bite their dead.

I am so glad to hear you found out Loki was having a problem and got him to the vet asap- and hope he returns to his normal self quickly. I would also like to believe he did not cause her death, maybe it was as you guessed. Give him, and yourself some extra pampering to get through the next few days. I have not had a glider die, but I imagine it is very difficult. We are all thinking of you and Loki. Best wishes.

I feel so sorry for you! But I know you'll pull through this and so will your little guy! That must be hard to have a glider die and then see the other mutilate itself! Glider hugs and kisses being sent!

Oh my, you have had quite a time lately. I'm very relieved to know there is a reason Loki is chewing on himself; when the infection is gone he will probably return to normal.

As for Pandora, sounds like he was just being a good buddy and trying to wake her - right?! I know it is still a very sad situation but things are not as bleak as they once were.

I sincerely hope all of you can get back to loving one another and be happy. Glider hugs!

I am so releived to hear you took your remaining glider to the vet.

UTI's are very painfull and will make the gliders very ill and thus die. Usually there are some warning signs associated with this kind of illness. Gliders will usually go off their feed, may have excessive thirst, excessive urine with a bad odor, become somewhat vocal when unable to urinate and often will self mutilate due to the associated pain in that area of the body.

It is unusual that two gliders were infected and both at the same time.

I think I would try to find the cause of the problem...diet or housing conditions are primary canidates as to the villian.

Prayers being sent your way for all of the family during this sad time.
