Hey Everyone,

Has anyone ever fed their Sugies Butterworms? Since the babies love variety, I am considering checking out Butterworms in the future, just to throw in an occasional treat. They have a very high Calcium content (2 to 1 over Mealies, aparrently), which is desirable.

They are native to Chile. Since they are fairly rare as far as Insect breeders, I am reluctant to purchase them. I think I will just stick with Mealies, Supers and Crickets. Still, I am curious if anyone has ever fed one to a Sugie. The one thing that attracts me to them is their high calcium content and "sweet" smell.

Butterworms sound like a great idea, but unfortunately are very expensive (compared to mealies) because, from what I'm reading, they're all unable to mature (irradiated) leaving Chile and so the whole supply comes from Chile.

sounds like a great food, naturally calcium-rich, but expensivo.

Yeah, the irradiation has me a bit worried too. Makes me wonder what the side effects could be. If irradiation can stop the metamorphasis in Butterworms, why not in Mealies and Supers? Makes me wonder

My girls seem to like butterworms. At one time they ate mealies, but my little one Mel took a dislike to the hard shells on the outside and both of my girls stopped eating them. So I tried butterworms next. They seem to love them, but they are expensive. Several good points though, they can keep from up to 6 months in the fridge and they seem to be able to withstand a varied vartiety of climates. My butterworms survived 4 days in the post office with no air conditioning, the waxworms did not . Also, I toggle between the worms as a live treat and chicken as another source of protine, so it's not too too expensive.
It's funny to watch them eat the worms. Those worms keep squirming after they've taken several bites out of them, so my girls will beat them against their wheels, trying to knock the last wits outta them.

Butterworms, I believe, are all taken from the wild and shipped here. Anything wild has parasites which can be passed on to your sugar gliders. Just a thought. (I doubt that any irradiation which doesn't kill the butterworms themselves would kill the parasites inside them.)

Grey Glider I get mine from http://www.butterworms.com/
Super quick shipping and they send them with a little cool pack to keep them cool for a short time.
Make sure to order the FEEDER worms, not the worms used for bait. You can also order wax worms, meal worms and red crawlers from them and they will ship them in the same package. It's super convienent if you want to just buy a couple (packs of 25-20) of each of their worms so you can test which your glider like the most.

What a great site - THANKS!

Do you feed your gliders wax, red worms too? Do you know the nutritional difference?

Well, most are larger than waxworms and mealworms, I think they are about the size of a Superworm. They are a form of Moth Larva. They are from Chile. They have twice the Calcium content than any other feeder bugs. And I guess they are super tasty. When I give my girls a choice between the Butterworms or the waxworms they never even touch the wax worms those silly gits!!

As for paracites, so far I haven't had any probelms in the 4 months I've been feeding them to the girls.

I guess you can feed your gliders Red Crawlers One of my vets told me that he recommends Red Crawlers to all glider owners. I still haven't tried them. I'm afraid that they will lose interest in a earthworm half way through and leave dead carcasses all over their cage eeewwww. The girls eat every bit of the butterworms, the only draw back is when they get a chin full of worm oooze, they'll shake their heads and get the ooze all over me LOL
Hmmm the nutritional differences between Waxworms and Butterworms. I'll have to look into it. Basically, I'm just happy when my girls actually eat something! They are such picky lil twits. I was happy with the calcium content and having another source of protein. Boiled chicken doesn't last very long in the fridge. I end up throwing most of the chicken away by the time it goes bad. Maybe I should cook 1/2 of a chicken breast as apposed to a whole one.

EDITED!!!

I found a table of nutritional content for a lot of the feeder bugs. (EEEK!!! Don't buy worms from the below website though!)
