How Many Gliders Per Cage? #41123

Hey, Folks!

I may not have posted this thread in the correct forum; therefore, if it is not please feel free to "move" it.

I feel like I have a REALLY stupid question, as if I should already know the answer BEFORE adopting gliders, but here it goes...

Currently, I have a cage that is 30 inches in Length X 33 inches in Height X 17.5 inches in width.

The cage comes with a stand, but the stand itself is NOT included in ANY of the dimensions. Matter of fact, the only dimension the stand would alter is the height.

Anyway, I only have one (1) glider using the cage, but obviously it can inhabit more. I just do not know HOW many gliders I should place inside without overcrowding them.

Eventually, I would like to see a family of four (4) using this cage, but I wanted to get a second opinion before doing so.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Well, I'm going to guess you have the same cage my boyfriend has. He has a pair of brothers in there right now and it's a good size for them. I think 4 gliders would be a bit crowded in that cage though...

I agree with Leyna. That cage is a little on the small side for anything more than two gliders. If you end up with a colony of four, you should probably upgrade to a bigger cage

Actually, the smallest size cage recommended for even a single glider is 36" tall. You should really consider investing in a bigger cage - your suggie will love you for it.

A 24" by 18" by 36" tall PVC coated cage with 1" by 1/2" bar spacing, is the minimum size allowed for a single glider. The bigger cage, the better, especially the height.

I have a single glider in a 3'x2'x6' cage and he loves it!

Although suggies are so tiny, they need lots of room to be happy. My cage is 3X2X4 and I'm making a bigger one this summer and I only have 3 gliders

My cage IS 36 inches in Height if you count the tray.

I subtracted the additional three inches (in my original post) because the gliders cannot utilize those extra inches. It is basically dead space.

I did not know that glider owners messured the entire cage as "accurate" dimensions!

When calculating cage sizes, I have always eliminated the dead space from my dimensions, otherwise you end up with a actaul 33 inch tall cage instead of a 36 inch!

As far as a bigger cage goes, I already have one, but was contemplating on selling it. I guess I will continue to keep it.

You're right. Your cage is probably fine for two gliders, as long as they get out of cage playtime regularly. Mine is about the same size, maybe a couple inches smaller. I've got two gliders in it, but I definitely plan to build a larger one soon. The thing that's held me back on building the larger one is that I like where I have it sitting right now, (on a dresser where the bottom of it is shoulder height to me, and it doesn't take up any room I would otherwise be using) and a larger cage wouldn't really fit on the dresser, not to mention I wouldn't be able to reach the top of it. Also, I've been able to be really good about keeping it clean because I can easily fit it in the shower to rinse the whole thing off, and I'm afraid a larger cage would be much more difficult to clean and therefore I may get lax about it. I may get fussed at, but I'm just being honest with myself and you.

By the way, is anyone going to be selling cages at the SGGA? Chaser? I bet that would go over really well! Hey, maybe I'll go ahead and build my bigger one and build an extra too to sell and make up the cost of mine! Except I wasn't planning on being vendor. Oh well.

PixTrix,

Which numbers are length, height and width of these dimensions? 24" by 18" by 36".

If these numbers read 24 inches length, 18 inches in width and 36 inches in height, then my cage IS bigger than this (minus the half inch in width.)

30 inches in length x 36 in height (counting try area) x 17.5 inches in width.

Funny. I have read that the average cage size for one or two gliders should be no smaller than 2x2x3. (I do not know which numbers goes to length, height or width.)

Well, having read around on GliderU, pretty much all of the cages people keep their suggies in are "too small". This is if that is the gliders permanent all-day residence. If the gliders get 4-5 hours of outside running and jumping playtime in a "glider playroom" of some sort that is larger, then the incidental time they spend in the smaller cage (eating, sleeping, eliminating, running on the wheel) is better.

By your dimensions, I think you have the same cage we do for our two. We want to get four to get a pet-colony going (all neuts and girls) because I agree with GU that, as a colony animal, they'd be better off with a little family unit to hang around with.

I'm chewing my nail about that cage as well. We're going to be moving in six months, though, so I don't want to build any implacements I'm going to have to take down again, so we'll probably wait on two more until we have a better room for them. I don't want to have four in there if it might cramp them. But, again, the longer we wait the more inured our current two will be to their smaller colony and, I imagine, the harder it'll be to successfully introduce new guys in there. Plus we'd want to buy any new ones from a reputable breeder, which most likely means getting joeys, so the OLDER ours get the harder it'll be to introduce young gliders.

suggie love,
dimensions are usually given in a LxWxH format so 2x2x3 would be 2 wide, 2 long, and 3 high

SuggieLove, the smaller cages I have here are actually 34" high in cage space. The height of 36", I just measured from the bottom of the cage and on up.

I used the LxWxH dimensions format, as babybird719 has stated.

I would consider the lower limit of 36" to be 36" of USEABLE space. That means that stands and trays and whatnot shouldn't be included. It doesn't really matter if you have a cage that's 5' tall with a stand if the actual space the gliders inhabit is only 2' tall, y'know?

GU takes a rather extreme stance on cage size - I believe they say a cage should be 9' tall and some extreme number of feet in length. I think that's too large. But I also think that the minimum requirement by the USDA and other organizations of 2x2x3 is too small.

But. Regardless of how I feel about the matter, the point is that it's up to the particular owner to make a judgement call. Do you honestly have your gliders outside of their cage, actively playing, for 4-5 hours a night? Jumping, running, and gliding? If not, you need to get a bigger cage. Keeping such an active animal in too small of a space is unfair.

Besides, it's fun to watch Glider Air-Ballet if you have a big cage

Becca,

I totally agree! This is EXACTLY what I was trying to say!

Unfortunately, which means I am still approximately three (3) inches short of usable height space and about 6.5 inches short in width space.

Maybe I will sell is particular cage instead of my other one.

Glider Guardians, you really have got to watch for those "dead space" inches when measuring, building or shopping for a new cage. Like Becca said, be sure to properly omit tray areas and stands when messuring.

babybird719 & PixTrix

Thanks for for LxWxH format. It helps out a lot!

I have always used the USPS format which is LxHxW. It helps to know which format to use when discussing common dimension.

Regardless, of which format used, (if you are careful with the dimensions) you would end up with the same cage measurements, just in a different order.

Anyway, thanks for cluing me in. I appreciate it.

I think your cage is small for 1 glider but 2 gliders, definitely way too small.

With these tiny furry butts and cage size bigger is always better.. I currently have three, we built the cage they are in (and I am not really happy with it) it is 4ft (L) x 3ft (W) x 5ft (H). it gives them lots of room to run around and play.
