Here's a link for ya: http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/darcy.htm

That should answer most of your questions. All my kids are on it & are doing fabulous! They like the vanilla and the strawberry. I haven't tasted it, but it smells like a milkshake! Just make sure you use regular Ensure & NOT high calcium or high protien as those types contain a lot of sodium!

Mine LOVE it. Before switching my Kiwi was small. She was healthy but small. Now she has gained the little weight she needed, is maintaining it and her coat is so fluffy and beautiful. My second glider was on monkey biscuits fruit veggies and vits, she was a good weight already, but since switching to Darcys I have noticed a difference in her coat. Also beautiful and fluffy now! Neither has gotten fat.

I have my two boys on Darcy's and they are doing great on it. They have an excellent coat condition, their tails are extremely fluffy, and they clean their plate almost every night. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/muchlove.gif" alt="" />

Mine like vanilla best but every now and then I'll give them some strawberry or mixed berry. I even refrigerated and drank a vanilla one and a strawberry one, and they really do taste like a milkshake, they're awesome. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

I recently switched to Darcy's from the monkey biscuit diet (not because it wasn't good, but because I can't get monkey biscuits anymore). My guys are doing great on it, and they like it just as much as their previous diet. Don't know whether or not they look any better, but they sure are good and healthy. I think it's a great diet. And, like the monkey biscuit diet, it is VERY easy to make. That's always a bonus!

I printed off a copy of the Darcy diet from thesugarshack.com that stated you could use the high calcium or high protein version of the Ensure. I went by what it stated and didn't realize there was a difference in their version of the diet and the original. I didn't even look at the sodium content when I went to the store. I wonder how much of a difference there is? I guess I will have to check into that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Yes, there is a difference. Donna Fritz, the inventor of the diet, specifically has said not to use the high calcium or high protien due to the sodium content. If you wish to ask her questions about the diet directly, her GC screen name is saharanfox & she usually checks in about once a week.

This link:

http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/darcy.htm

say to add 3/8 teaspoons of Calcium Carbonate (Ruger's, a human-grade pharmaceutical powder.)

However, can you substitute this ingredient for REC-CAL Phosphorus-Free Calcium w/Vit.D3 Ultrafine Powder (neon pink label)?

If not, there where can glider guardians purchase Calcium Carbonate (Ruger's, a human-grade pharmaceutical powder) i.e. Walgreens, CVS, etc.? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanx.gif" alt="" />

I have had all my gliders on Darcys diet for over 2 years now. I mix 1 can ensure to 1 crushed Jamieson 250 mg tablet calcium citrate.

Yes, calcium citrate is much better, they can digest it easier. That is what I use as well. Did some research into it before switching to Darcy's. Glad to hear that's what you use Karen, maybe that's why Noel took to it so well, LOL! Glad that was a smooth transition for her, hahahaha.

No, you cannot substitute RepCal w/D3 as the Ensure has D3 in it already and too much D3 is bad for them. I've found that the best calcium to use is JurassiCal as is stays suspended in the Ensure whereas the crushed citrate tabs tend to sink to the bottom.

Yep- I second the Jurassical. It's one of the few vitamin supplements that will stay suspended in the liquid, so you don't have to worry about whether or not they're eating around the vitamins.

Jackie- Donna only recently changed the suggestion for the type of Ensure from High Calcium to regular for the reasons Gina mentioned. She made a post about it just a couple months ago. Until then, I think most people were using High Calcium or High Protein (not me though because all they sell around here is regular lol). I don't even think the suggestion has been changed on most websites yet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

Where can you purchase JurassiCal? It sounds like something strictly found off the web.

Also, what is the dosage recommendation? Is it the same as Ruger's? 3/8 teaspoons? Thanks!

I just got Jurassical in petco. I know they have it in most pet shops or it is online. I bought the liquid one, its 3/8 teaspoon,I pour it into the ensure bottle shake it up, measure out a tablspoon in the ice cube trays and freeze it. Gizmo LOVES his ensure, he looks great on this diet.

if you grind calcium citrate tablets to powder, it blends extremely well. Yes it is much more easily digested into the body, therefor you actually need less then you would if you used calcium carbonate, but each to their own. It is an extremely easy diet to use too. This is also the only diet ihave found ALL my gliders will eat.

Oh fine....of course I just went to a local health food store yesterday and bought a different brand of the calcium citrate. I guess I will have to return it along with the high protein Ensure. None the glider diets that I have tried have I ever gotten all of that diets ingredients right on the first trip to the store. LOL...If it ain't one thing it's another. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tantrum.gif" alt="" />

Darn! We do not have a local Petco here in Evansville, IN. The closest two (2) would be in Bowling Green, KY or Terre Haute, IN! Both stores are a two (2) hour drive from me! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tantrum.gif" alt="" />

All we have is a lousy PetsMart! I guess it will be on-line shopping for me! Thanks for information!

I have an unopened bottle of Natural Oyster Shell Calcium (Calcium Carbonate.) They are tablet form and each tablets is 500mg.

IF I were to use this (and I am NOT saying that I would,) but IF I were to use tablets then how do I get 3/8 teaspoon dosage? Do I just keep crushing pills until I fill 3/8 teasoon or do I use one (1) tablet per can of Ensure?

Also, what about mg dosage? The Ruger Calcium Carbonate that is listed as an ingredient does not specify the mg dosage of the human-grade pharmaceutical powder.

Do I use 250mg, 500mg, 1000mg, etc.? The diet does not state this imperative information.

As far as calcium mg dosage goes, what dosage do other sugar glider guardians use and why?

I just read that 1/2tsp of 250mg calcium citrate per can ensure equals out the same as if you where to use carbonate on the bottom page of:

http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/darcy.htm

Does everybody who is currently using the Darcy diet agree with this dosage?

Yep, that is because the gliders can digest the calcium citrate more easily than they can the carbonate. More of it is absorbed, so less is needed to fill the requirements. I really like Darcy's diet and in my opinion it is one of the best. Never heard of a glider that didn't like it. And it fills them very well. You don't end up with as many thin gliders.

I have a quick question too. when I was trying to find the calcium carbonate at the store I ran across a liquid coral calcium. I didn't get it because I wasn't sure how the 3/8 teaspoon would transfer to a liquid measurement or how safe it would be for the gliders. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Thanks

I would ask any questions about altering the calcium to Donna Fritz (saharanfox). She's really good about answering PMs!

chipsmom, jurassical is only something that some members have found useful. The diet actually calls for Calcium Carbonate, like you would buy for yourself in pill (or if possible, powder) form. I don't think I'd use rep-cal as you could give too much D3. I myself do not use calcium carbonate or jurassical. I buy calcium citrate as it is more easily digested, but this jurassical sounds very good as well. Just remember, research is key!

Yes, Nick is right- Don't use the Repcal w/ D3 because that's just too much vitamin D in their diet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />.

Southernbell,

I visited my local PetsMart and I DID see that they carried the Jurassical (in the reptile section) just as you had mentioned; however, it was in powder form.

Does the 3/8 teaspoon only apply to the liquid version of Jurassical or can I use this dosage with the powder form too?
