Chi Chi chewed a hole in the satin lining of her favorite bag. Being a girl, she always gravitates toward the bag if its in site. Yesterday I noticed both sugar gliders were awake mid-day and so i checked them out. Chi Chi had wrapped a hind leg in a myriad of strings she tore loose. It seemed she had been like that for hours, her leg was swollen, pink and glistening with moisture. I cut off the bag immediatley and was horrified by the site. The vet hospital that treats extotics is a 2 hours bus ride away, so I ran thru my phone book looking for someone to give me a ride. The vet cut off the string that was too tight for me to mess with and gave me a $111.40 bill. Well worth it. I should have scoured the section of this site that lists off the unsafe items. How lucky we are. Hopefully at least someone can take something away from this.

I'm sure that was a very scary experience for all of you I'm glad that everything turned out okay and the vet was able to get the rest of the string off. I'm sure he already told you what to watch for, but just in case, you'll want to keep a close eye on her leg to watch for swelling & redness, pussules and/or black/necrotic tissue. Please keep us posted on her progress. And thank you for the reminder that we all need to be wary of loose strings in pouches.

Do watch for the signs Suz mentioned. If it gets infected, or hurts, she could start to chew on it-also known as self mutilation. How is she doing today? Satin and similar materials aren't a good idea unless supervised, such as for tent time, because of the potential for strings and such. I would recommend staying with fleece, which is much safer. I'm so sorry this happened! Please, please keep us updated on her and let us know how she is. There's a chance she could have severe damage from the loss of circulation, but time will tell. I'm worried for your girl.

Poor little baby. I'm so happy she is ok though. That must have been really scary!
