When we moved recently, the hubby and I started to talk about converting a huge walk-in closet into a glider "cage" of sorts. It has double doors, so we were thinking, maybe take the doors off, get some coated mesh and rebuild the front entirely (and build another door so we can get in to clean it), and then just screw in some fleece ropes, toys, etc in the closet, like we have in the playroom... dunno. I think it would be great for them to have so much space when we're at work so they can still glide around... but we're pretty unsure of how to go about this. Has anyone else here done something like this? And what would I need to consider before jumping into such a huge project?

Thanks, Glidrz5! At this point, we're just wondering about the specifics, lol- like what type of flooring (we were thinking tile or hardwood, maybe, for cleaning purposes, and so on and so forth). And what types of washable paint may be acceptable... I know that things like this usually take quite a bit more effort than what you originally estimate, though, so while I'm expecting that, I'm hoping for any advice out there I can possibly get.

A pull out try for droppings and such.. and polyeurethayne.. shellack.. the walls so they don't eat the latex (I assume) based paint if it somehow manages to chip. Um.. that's all I can think of really. Just keep in mind shelves etc you may want to put in there. Oh and don't forget the glider kitchen space.

My thought would be to put the mesh on the walls of the inteior of the closet as well. My playroom is a walk in and Skit tries to "walk" or glide up the walls, having the mesh would give them something to "hold" onto. I'd go laminate for the floor. Cheap, easy to install and easy as heck to clean. I know some members have used astroturf for the flooring, so some of that on top? Wish I could do this! Oh, another thing to think about is possibly a "roof" of mesh to protect them from the light source (and possibly changing the light source to a different color (blue?)). Lights get HOT and you wouldnt want them to burn themselves playing on/by it. Good luck, post pics as soon as it's done.

Yes I agree with the dimmer idea. I put my gliders in my extra bathroom, no windows and their sleep patterns got all screwey because they never saw the sun. They got confused.

I used to have a 5 foot iguana and we did the same thing for him at our last house...We took the door off and put on a screen door, then I made a ramp, fake mountain, vines, installed special uv lighting, basking lamps, etc...and basically turned it into a mini rainforest. I asked my husband if I could share his closet with him, and turn mine into a sugar glider room, but he said he had to draw the line somewhere.....lol

Thanks for all the good suggestions, guys! The lighting is a definite important feature, and I like the idea of the timed dimmer switch... also, shellacing the walls would be a good idea, since I've been thinking of painting the inside to resemble their natural habitat, and coating it with something safe would be needed. Another thing I'm curious about is what type of mounting/wall brackets and such would be best for ropes, leaping ledges, etc.? I need to be able to remove the toys and such for cleaning... I started on some design sketches for it today, too- I think this will be a fun summer project! I'm so glad my hubby understands my love for my pets... this was his idea originally, lol!

I'm still going to go with my idea of putting the mesh over the walls. Then you can zip tie shower curtain rings to the mesh which you can attach ropes, pouches, toys and other stuff. For ledges I'd get closet organizor shelves and screw those in, then just scrub them when it's cleaning day. I thought of something earlier too. It's kind of construction related so if I lose you, PM me and I'll get my dad to explain it in layman terms. Okay, most homes have textured walls. This means there's bumps and such from drywall compound that's been put on the wall and then "knocked down". Okay, if it's heavily texurted and the gliders can get it, they'll try and eat it (mine did). I'd suggest re-compounding the wall to get a smooth knock down. God I hope your hubby can understand that (or you) because I'm unsure of how well I did that. As for the shellack over the wall, I don't know if that's a good idea b/c I think it's supposed to soak into wood and if you have paint under it I don't know how well it'd absorb and become non- toxic. I think someone will be along soon with that answer, I could be completely off base. You're making me (er, Skit and Stitch, my gliders) jealous, by the way.

Hmmm... good point with the walls, youreyesxonmine... although it sort of wrecks my painting idea, lol! (what can I say? A true artist at heart) You didn't lose me with the wall thing, I followed it okay, but I'll have to check the walls out- they looked smooth, but I haven't examined them in great detail just yet.
Lol, and I don't mean to make you (er, Skit and Stitch) jealous, BTW- if I ever get this thing worked out and you're in the area, we'll make sure you guys can come over and play!

[:"green"]My gliders are jealous, too. My husband & I are looking for a new house right now. I think I'll have to broach the idea with him. lol. Of course, having 4 clans of gliders, I would have to use 4 closets... hmm... might be a problem there, eh?!?
