When I bought my 1st gliders(parents&their 2-3mo OOP female joey)they all shared a cage. I took the young female home first so that they were separated, and a week later, brought the parents home(The parents have since had 2male joeys, now 9&1/2 weeks OOP). About 2wks ago,my young female suddenly started showing early signs of calcium deficiency(although getting supplements and eating BLM, etc). I wondered if the stress of our recent move, etc could be to blame for her condition-she hadn't eaten well in a 2day period while I was away and son was caring for her. She also had a new lump appearing on her abdomen, but we (kinda)ruled out pregnancy or dormant pregnancy as it had been over 4mo.since being in the cage w/her parents(father)&no other male contact since. I immediately made the 3hr.drive to the vet. Well, she is pregnant. The calcium supply was depleted due to this pregnancy. the vet advised me that the pregnancy may not have good outcome(full term, or live baby, etc.)I have since inreased the calcium to support the pregnant female&joey, & the baby appears to be growing.
Now, here is main reason for this post. I have recently adopted a young male. He is supposedly older than her(according to the couple I rescued him from-originally from bad breeder in UT)-but he's fairly small. I know how important the father is in rearing the joeys&helping the mother,& was wondering if it would be okay to allow them to be together, where the male can become active father to the young joey when it comes OOP? We have completed the side by side cage, bag swapping, short nose to nose play time, and they get along great. I realize they will need monitoring for the safety of all, especially the joey when it finally emerges,if healthy, But I would really like a little extra input on the situation. Thanks [:"blue"] [/]

I think for her sake, it would be best to just leave her by herself for now. Adding a male will just stress her out and the male may try to kill the joey since it isn't his. He may also attack the female. Please don't risk it. Being a single parent is hard for anybody, including gliders, but it is managable.

Also, what diet do you feed? You said you feed BML, but can you be a little more specific, possibly posting the rescipe you use and a list of fruits and veggies you feed? A calcium deficiancy in a glider that young is very uncommon. Did your vet run any test on her to make sure that there wasn't a secondary cause to the HLP?

vet felt stress was her main health issue along w/being too young to be preg.(She quit eating while I was out of town for 2 days-fine when I left, lethargic when I returned)The vet also did stool smears for parasites(neg.)She is completely fine now, eating real well&the joey appears to be growing normally.I use Bourbon's modified recipe,rep-cal's herptivite& calcium supplement(also have vionate on hand)All of my gliders eat the BLM everynight, mixing in Boiled Chicken or turkey(3-4 small pieces/cubes)at least 3X/week-lightly dusted w/calc.I alternate veg's & fruit-Veg's frozen:green bean, pea, carrot, corn mixt./fresh:sweet potato, squash(zucc.,yellow crook neck, spaghetti, etc)Fruits (always fresh):Red seedless grapes, kiwi, honeydew, guava, papaya, apple wedges etc. Approx. 1/4 c. veg/fruit depends on the glider. Occ.small tsp. of yogurt w/live cultures-3Xwk. nectar/juice&bottled purified H2O always avail.&fresh.They get meal worms or crickets each night lightly dusted w/calcium &enjoy an occasional boiled egg.I also have suncoast zookeeper's secret that was given to me recently that I've been putting in separate bowl to see how they like that.

I wondered if it would be too much stress on her w/new friend, but decided to place cages side by side to help the new one adjust.(I received him from someone that couldn't care for him and it was his 2nd home in a short time.)They each have separate time out & gravitate to the others cage, clicking&sniffing. They will spend more time on the others cage instead of the usual curtain dangling. When Sleeping bags were swapped, each dove into the others bag instantly& continued to lay in the bag, peeking out occasionally. It's just that I have mixed feelings. Part of me didn't/doesn't want to allow them to become too close before the joey is OOP, but they enjoy each other so much, I feel badly not letting them be together more. There has been absolutely no quarreling or hesitation on either of their part, even share their food bowl when they take a playtime break. Many of you have more experience than I do in this situation-no matter how cute I think they get along,& will respect any & all guidance in this matter. They are a huge part of my life & only want what's best for them.

I still think it would be best to wait until the joey is OOP and weaned to introduce them. Yes, it is hard on females to care for joeys by themself, but they can do it. If you put the male with her, no matter how nice he is being to her, he will most likely eat the joey.

That is a tough one. Some males make very good surrogate daddies. I would consider allowing them together under a strict 24 hr supervision. Like in a pouch and with you during the day (with extra pouch in case separation is needed) and watching them through the night when in the same cage. That way you can determine for yourself through observation whether or not it will work or not.
I know it is definately not a good idea to put an unfamiliar male in when the joeys are newly oop as that will increase the chances of him killing them. However if they are still ip when you put him in he may be a great daddy for them.
Hope I helped and if anyone disagrees or has had a different experience please share.

The two spent the day and through dinner in a pouch with me.They're currently racing around my room, up curtains, across pc,etc.I appreciate everyones concern and advise. I will continue to monitor their time together,&watch when it is closer to time for the baby to be OOP.I figure another 4wks. If If they begin to change the way they act around each other for any reason, I will definitely separate til baby is OOP and weened. Thanks again.Sometimes just need a little reassurance now&then. And she ends the reply just as 2gliders land on her head..........

The reason I am so adminently against you putting those 2 gliders is because I last a joey once in a similar sitution. I thought the same thing as you, that I could watch them and intervien if anything were to happen. The gliders were together for over a week, no bickering or anything and one day, the joey was gone. They were actually in a bonding pouch, around my neck when the joeys "disappeared". There was no crabbing or anything that would make me think something wasn't right... No matter how friendly the gliders are with eachother, you are risking that joeys life.
