Hi i'm considering getting a glider but i'm going to be going to college in about 2 years and i was just wondering if it would be a bad idea if i was to get one and when i go away to college leave it with my friend who is getting his new glider in a week? How friendly would my glider be to his? And would it be better to have two boys or a girl and a boy?

If you get a glider and leave it with your friend, your glider will become more of her glider since they will most likely bond to one another. If you're planning to go away to college, your best bet is to either take your glider with you (which doesn't always work out and isn't always an option), or just wait to get a glider until your life is a bit more settled. I waited two years to get my gliders, and I think it's the best decision I've ever made. Now I'm at a time in my life when I can care for them and give them the attention they deserve, whereas before it would have just been unfair to them for me to have them.

There really is no definitive answer to whether the two gliders will get along. They may, or they may not. If you decided to go this route, you would have to go through a formal introduction process. This consists of putting the cages side by side, switching pouches, letting them get used to one another's scent, and introducing in a neutral area. Some gliders experience love at first sight, and others just don't get along. There's no way to ensure that they will get along.

If you get two males, you would most likely need to neuter at least one of them because two in tact males will fight for dominance. If you get a male and a female, prepare for joeys unless you have the male neutered.

I got my first glider when I was in highschool, and I have to tell you it is not a good idea to leave a glider behind. Ive seen them go into heavy depression if they do not get the love they need. Most dorms would not allow them. I would have to say that if you do, you should figure out a way to take him/her with.

Misiababy86 – you are completely correct I work for a college and pets are not allowed, and I don’t know of any college that allows pets in the residence halls. However if you plan to live off campus you still would have to find an apartment complex that would allow them also.

Babygal835 – It’s a difficult decision to make SouthernBell is correct if you leave you glider with your friend and if those two gliders do get along it will be difficult to separate them after they bond to each other.

Let me tell you from my experience. When I first started college, I discovered about sugar gliders because I desperately wanted an animal companion during my college years, but as it turns out, I was busy, besides that, my idiotic roommates who complained about my having a pet in our on-campus apartment. I am not saying all roommates are bad, but never know when one does come in the way. Like the other person said, the residence halls don't allow pets. So I never got any, until now, I just graduated. The best luck to you! The waiting will be worth it, knowing you will have more time for your precious sugar gliders.
