I rarely read the real stories section of this message board. I usually only get on here when I have a question or something. I think this is like the chicken soup for the glider lovers soul. This morning I went to feed my gliders and all six of them where on the floor of there cage!! Three of them were dead and the other three where barely moving. I picked them up and rushed them to the vet... (thirty minutes away) One of the three remaining died an hour later and as of 6pm this evening the two remaining where alive but the vet said they do not think they will make it. I moved about four mnths ago. I built my gliders a huge cage as soon as we moved it was TOP PRIORITY!!! One of the things I looked for in house shopping was a room to put my gliders in. The cage is 5'x5'x7'tall. I got on here when I built it to check about paint because I wanted to paint two of the walls in the cage. I got the assumption from what I read to make sure the paint was non toxic when dry. So two walls where painted. One wall I used acrilics and painted a mural on it and put plexiglass over that wall so they where not exposed to the paints. The other wall did not have the plexi glass. Well the gliders chewed the wall not long after they where in the new cage. I covered where they where chewing, monitored them closly after I noticed it and covered the spot they chewed. They seemed perfectly fine. They have been in the cage for three months. I did not notice any more chewing. However the vet thinks the paint caused this sudden insident. My gliders where fine 24 hours before I found them!!! I just don't know what happened. I have a guinea pig in the same room as the glider cage and she is fine. So the vet feels it was something the gliders injested and not fumes. I am haveing the nacropsy (SP?) done so I know what I did wrong. I have had my gliders for more then three years. They have all been so healthy. I don't understand it. I never thought I would loose them. I just don't understand how it could have been the paint issue and hit them all at one time. I feel horrible about it. I just felt I needed to share my story and will post an update when I know more.
Hoping and praying for my remaining babies. Crisi

Oh, this is such a sad story. It is sooo hard to loose one glider but 4 and perhaps two more is hard to comprehend.

For so many gliders to have died at one time does sound like they did injest something. Since you have had your gliders for over three years would leave one to beleive they were on a sound diet. Did you by chance change it? Did you feed crickets by chance?

Only way to know for sure why they died is to have nucropsys done on each of them. Ask for an H&E.

Prayers coming your way.

Only one of my gliders is left. The vet says she is really weak and it is just a matter of time. She also says that they were seizing. One was sent away for the nacropsy and the vet is going to open one up to check stomach content to see if possibly that gives us any closure. She really feels it was the paint. I did nothing unusual with the diet. They had BML and veggies, fruit, chicken, etc.. no crickets lately so that was not it. I feel horrible. I never imagined I would loose them ever. Especially all at once. I will make major changes to the cage. I may just get rid of it. I'm an idiot and do not deserve sugar gliders. I took my babies for granted and now they are all gone. I still don't understand it, they where fine one day and dying the next. Its not fair, I will keep you posted on the nacropsy results. Thank you everone for your support.

Please don't say you don't deserve gliders. You had your babies for three years, cared for them and loved them. It is so weird that it struck them all at once. Even if it was something they chewed it seems strange it would hit them all at the same time unless they all ate the same amount. You may want to take a sample of the cage paint in to the vet. I wouldn't totally rule out something airborne just because the GP is fine, particually if the GP's cage is down low, gliders tend to stay up high where odors collect, so they would be struck first. I hope the vet can figure out what happened if for no other reason than to give you peace. I know from experience what it is like to loose gliders and the wringer we put ourselves through trying to figure out what happened. I'm praying for you to find the answers and closure you need.

Just a thought! ...Do you have gas up there?...Could be a small gas leak that you can't smell, and not enough to affect humans or larger animals, but lethal to small gliders...Please keep us updated on the necropsy...Our thoughts and prayers are with you...

It is so strange that they got sick at the same time - makes me think along the lines of a small gas leak in the house or something of that nature.
It has been on my mind since yesterday - such a tragic story.

Whoops - just read Patches' post so I guess this possibility has been mentioned - sorry.

Patches, and Charlee good thought about the gas leak, I have a propane detector in my kitchen because I have a gas stove (we loose our power a lot) It also makes me wonder about other gases, carbon monoxide, or radon? (?SP) Just a thought. How is the 6th little one doing? Any update?

i am so sorry for your huge loss, this is such a shocking tragedy and donnot balme yourself for a second. Fumes do sound like a likely culprit.
It had to be something to effet them all at once like that. have u checked the water bottle for clogs, dehydration can cause siezures aswel as other things... its all so sad. pls keep us posted.

You certainly do deserve to have gliders and they were lucky to have you as their owner. It sounds like you went through a lot of effort for their home and that shows how much you care rght there! Any kind of loss is always terrible but I hope your heart heals in time.

sorry i have not been on the computer lately. Thursday the vet recommended putting the last one to sleep. She was in a comma basicly and they said it was only a matter of time. The vet was waiting to here from the Toxicologist. I did check the cage thoroughly and did find the water bottle was clogged, I told the vet and she said she did not think that it would be just dehydration that would cause them all to die so quickly. I am supposed to here from her today and give her more information on the plywood, rather it was interior or exterior. and there diet. I really have not been told much, just that they suspect it was the paint. We have no gas lines in that room or anywhere near there. How would I check for a gas leak anyways?? I know in town I would call the gas company, but I live in the country and have propane? Is there a detector I could buy? I have a Carbon Monoxide detector, I put it in the room but it did not go off. No closure yet... I was I there cage cleaning it out on Saterday, I have hardware clothe across the middle sort of a landing. I bumped it and just bawled, it was the sound I would here when I came in the room all of them running around. It is still so hard to believe they are gone. I used to bring home leftovers from work (carrot sticks, jello, scrambled eggs) on occassion just as a snack. Friday at work they had the eggs and I thought of how much my babies loved when I brought home eggs. I will definitly let you know more when I do.

I know this must have been hard for you to give us an update. So sorry to hear about the last remainging glider having to be put to sleep. You did your best with your little family and I am sure they knew how much you loved them. Let us know about the findings in the necropsy report.

Sending prayers to help you heal with time.

There are no words I can think of to express my sympathy for the loss of your babies. You have some wonderful memories and they will be with you forever. May you soon gain some closure so that your heart can begin to heal.

Dear dear one-

Oh sweetie. I always HATE finding new posts here. It means someone is crying and in pain.

Mourn. Mourn them and the joy that you gave to each other. There is not one single person here that has not made one mistake or another. With these kids ranked as exotic pets, we are in the minority. We are all learning. Even the pros are. There are places and times that we learn, and I am so sorry about the pain that you feel. I cannot even begin to understand how you feel.

The simple truth for me is that none of us DESERVE anything! If I got what I deserve, well, I don't even want to think about it!!! I for sure would be divorced and petless! The truth is they love us and we love them. And we guard each other's hearts. What hurts right now is that you are feeling the loss of so much for what seems to be so little. Fault is never the point. Neither is Guilt. Turn those away. They are liars.

I cannot say anything to make you feel better. No one can. God bless you now. We all offer you hugs, glider prayers, and over 700 broad shoulders for you to cry on and to lean on when you need it. PLEASE USE US. We all mourn with you and for your pain. You are never alone here.

In stillness and love,

Gliderbuff

Your story is one of the saddest I've read. If I had a joey (none right now) and a way to get it to you, I'd send it to you. My heart breaks every time I read a portion of this thread. While I am a breeder, I'm a glider lover FIRST, and all of my gliders are precious to me. I am so very sorry for your loss and I wish I could do something to help ease the pain of it. Will you be able to get another pair of gliders? Take care, and thank you for sharing your story. It had to be difficult.

You all are so wonderful. At work I get treated like an idiot for careing so much about them. To those people they are just "rodents" which of course they ARE NOT!! My family have been good though. I do not plan to get anymore gliders, not for a while anyways. I definitly need to make some changes to the cage, and find out for sure what the problem was. I also know if I do get more I will look for older gliders that people are getting rid of, A few of mine where rescues. I think the oldest ones need homes the most. I had all my males altered and spent so much time getting them all into one single cage together. I know I could handle it again in time be not for awhile. I still have not heard anymore from the vet. They are waiting to hear back from where they were sent. just waiting..

Hi, I'm new. You might have seen my new topic about keeping your babies away from ferrets. I know how you feel. They are the greatest pets! Mine died a few hours ago at the mouth of my other pet, which is a ferret. It was all my fault. I didn't provide a secure cage for her, and it was an easy-access for Furby (ferret) to get ahold of her. The guy I bought her from said that it was okay for sugar gliders to play with ferrets. Now I learned. To find out, she paid with the price of her short, precious life. I still have her body here with me, I don't want to let her go!! The trauma expression is still on her face. She must have felt so betrayed. I keep picturing the horror she went through before she passed away. She was sound asleep in her pouch before she was brutally murdered. There was blood splattered around her cage. Just knowing that she died because of my improper care, I could just kill myself. I've only had her for 2 wonderful weeks, and I visioned my long future with her and couldnt wait for her to grow up to become a bouncy adult and having her own babies. I just cant stop crying.
Although it hurts deeply to lose a loved one, the show must go on. I suggest that you buy a nice cage from a pet store instead and get you a new set of babies. Your late sugar gliders love you too and would want you to be happy. If I was a late sugar glider, I would- wouldn't you?

You are not an idiot. I recently lost one of my gliders, the way you describe them when they were sick is the exact same way mine was and he also was fine the day before. They have no paint in or near there cages. Please let us no what the vet said. Time helps heal even though it doesn’t seem like it. I am sorry about your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Airhead,
i see that you're still in pain, but sometimes gliders die, though we feel at the time we've made the right decisions.
I know if you had known this would happen, that you would have done something to prevent this.
Please let go of your glider, and remember her by improving for the next one..... I'm sure you will not let this happen again, and be a much better glider mom cause you have learned.

Tanja

Has there been any information on the cause of death of all these gliders from the any of the neucropsies by chance?

I finally got an answer from my vet last night. My gliders appeared healthy over all. They found no specific chemical that could have killed them. She said maybe some chemical in the wood, My vet said they are still puzzled because with all the testing they came up with nothing, she said they are sensitive critters. So, I guess no real closure. The only thing I can do is change the cage. I was going to get more gliders this weekend. With a safe cage and all. But, financial problems that just arrived caused that deal to fall through. I guess the only thing I have learned from this is never take your babies for granted tomorrow they may be gone.

Oh honey I'm so sorry. I had hoped that the vet could give you the answers you needed. I wish you luck with your new gliders when you are able to bring some home. They will not replace your babies in your heart but will make their own place there.

I am so sorry the report did not come back with any findings. It would have given you some closure as to the cause.

Take care...and when the time comes...you will know when it is time for another Sugar Glider.

I am still learning about gliders but I do know a bit about wood. It may not have been the paint. Was it MDF "plywood"? MDF is a composite of wood and bonding agents and some very toxic chemical to cure it. It is very durable and easy to work with, however it is toxic. There are other "plywoods" or particle boards that are cured or "treated". These also contain some deadly chemicals. Check the type of wood you used. Get a piece and take it to the lumber store and find out. Please let all of us know so if it was the wood, it won't happen again.
I am sooo saddened by this story and I agree that some people don't understand the bond between pet and owner. It's a love that only an animal can provide; unconditional and unquestioning. You can't get that from most people. Time and faith will see you through.
God bless all of your "family", here and "there".
