I got a glider on Saturday. He's usualy sweet and he doesn't bite much or crab at all. He's been letting me hold him and going to sleep in my hands. Then, for some odd reason, I come home and try to take him out of his cage today, and CHOMP! He bit hard, and he wouldn't stop. I can't think of any smell on my hands that would bother him. Could he possibly be trying to get food from my hand? He licks licky treat juice off of my fingers, so that might be it. Or is he just in a bad mood?

awwww... It's hard to say why he bit. There maybe a smell on your hands that bothered him even if you would think it would or you could have spooked him or he may just be in a bad mood.

My glider did the same thing when I first got her. She has not bit me since and it's been 3 years. I don't know why either.

Whats the age? Boys tend to get nippy for a while between 6-18 months depending on the glider?

He's about nine weeks old, so he hasn't got to his 2nd nippy stage. Oh well.

My oldest glider, Mojo-jojo, hates the smell of dogs. Even if I didn't pet the dog, if I went near a dog he will bite me. Sometimes my gliders just dont' want to be bothered through the day. It depends on the glider. When my gliders were bity I would hold a piece of dehydrated papaya or a snack they liked, so when they would bite, that is what they caught in their mouth. I know it doesn't sound like a good idea b/c it sounds like they might think you taste like that, but soon they realized I was just attempting to please them. I'm not recommending this idea b/c as I mentioned, it depends on the suggie, but it worked for mine. They rarely bite unless I annoy them. I look at them like another memeber of my family. WOuld you want to be bothered during hte day? How would you feel if you were hanging out and then someone/something 700 times your size suddenly tried to touch you. When you put yourself in the suggie's position it is easier to understand. It is hard to be patient though when you are anxious to bond.

I agree with Candy: you probably spooked him & that's his defensive reaction. With him biting more than once, you must've had some kind of scent on your fingers...mine will do that when I've been fishing in the jar for crickets: they'll bite my finger mistaking it for a cricket. Just remember that your intelligence level is a few steps above theirs, so leave him alone for awhile til your emotions are back in check & continue your relationship.
