Today is one of the worst days of my life. My ferret murdered my young sugar glider!! I've only had her for 2 weeks- well, they were 2 wonderful weeks. She changed my life and made me happier than any pet ever has. I have dogs, cats, a blind hamster, and a ferret.
I purchased my first sugar glider at a swapmeet from a man displaying them in a pet store. I asked the idiot if the gliders would get along w/ ferrets. He said, ' oh yeah- dont worry'. I was still skeptical so I kept my baby running around my bedroom w/ an open cage (bad idea) and my ferret ran around my living room w/ his open cage. My boyfriend and I usually make sure we keep the door shut to avoid a collision. Yep, you guessed it- my absent-minded boyfriend didnt shut the door all the way. So when we walked in the bedroom after realizing the door was ajar, I chased the ferret- who had my baby in his mouth. He released her and when I picked her up, she had blood coming out of her mouth and I knew right away that she was gone. I cried harder than I do at funerals. Her lifeless body is here next to me. I feel like she was cheated the 15 years or so that she could have lived for- a long happy life with me. My heart is broken. Her death was all my fault. She never did anythin wrong, except using the restroom on my friends. I don't know if I can get over this pain I feel- knowing that my baby died because of my improper care.
I plan on getting more sugar gliders, and selling my ferret. Please, please protect your babies from other animals. I could'nt find 'sugargliders for dummies' guidebooks anywhere. And if you do have another animal, keep your babies in a secure cage. I will go cry some more now.

I'm sorry to hear of your tragedy.
It still appears that you tried to to keep your glider from harm, so don't beat yourself up over it. It wasn't like you didn't care.
I know this will not lessen that pain, but you made a great step by coming here, and learning, and you will be a good glidermom again.
We all learn from mistakes, some really bad, and some with less impact.
Take heart...

Airhead,
I am so sorry about this. There is no point beating yourself up about it, things happen and sometimes no matter what we do, it happens anyway. The important thing is to remember the lesson involved, and not make the same mistakes again. I am sure your baby knew she was loved while she was with you, and there are alot of animals that never feel that, so she was very lucky to have you in her life. Remember the fun you had, and push the horror to the back of your mind. It hurts, but time will help with that until good memories surface first, and the pain fades. Good luck in the future with with a new glider.

Let me get this straight -

You are going to get rid of your ferret, who was your pet FIRST - to get MORE gliders?

I personally find that reprehensible.

I just got 3 gliders I adore - but also living in the house are 3 ferrets, 3 cats, 5 rats, and 2 hamsters. I would NEVER get rid of one of them, for any reason. I made a commitment to these animlas when I brought them into my home. They are with me for LIFE. If something happens to me arrangements have been made for their care for the remainder of their lives.

I cannot believe you would consider discarding your ferret in favor of some new "cool" pet.

What happens when something cooler comes along, and the gliders are becoming a drag?

Madrone, I am not trying to offend anyone, first off.
I am sure it took alot of courage for Airhead to post what happened to her glider and the pain she is going thru is enough without recriminations being heaped on her also. If she feels that is the best choice for her to sell her ferret, we are not here to tell her she is a horrible person for doing so. Maybe after the freshness of this pain has dimmed, she may consider keeping her ferret, may be not, but it is her decision.

People, please, this forum is for people to vent their grief and pain and we should not attack them for doing so. She may never come back to learn even more about gliders in the future, and we definitely do not want to run people off who are willing to learn as much as they can.
Now, since I am not a moderator, I will step down .

Thanks for saying that Bonzai...She is feeling so much pain right now...it is not for anyone here to tell her she is wrong or make her feel even worse. I am so sorry for your loss Airhead...and I hope that you make the best decision for yourself about what to do with your ferret...Don't get rid of him just because you're mad at him...But if you really feel that it's the best thing, you know in your heart what is best for both of you. I am also sorry that you were so rudely attacked during your time of grief over this loss. I hope that you soon begin to realize that it was not your fault, and that you love your second glider just as much as your first, though none will ever replace your first baby. hugs.

I do apologize for my "harshness" - but the fact still remains that these animals depend on us, love us, and never asked for us to bring them home in the first place.

That said - I do understand how horrible she must feel and did not mean to make light of her grief. I think what happened is terrible, and do not blame her for what happened - it was a terrible accident and I truly feel for her. I do not feel she should in any way be chastised for what has happened to her glider.

The "disposable pet" thing is just something that raises my blood pressure big time - I can not stay quiet on that issue (although I didn't mean to be so harsh, especially during an already difficult time) - and I am sure most of you here would have a problem with it if someone had a glider for awhile, got a ferret, then decided they didn't want the glider so much anymore. In my opinion that is cruel!

-------------------------

Airhead -

I am truly sorry for your loss and understand how terrible you must feel. Do not beat yourself up too badly - accidents do happen and you were being responsible in keeping play areas seperated and doing everything you should have.

As you can see, talk of selling your ferret has pushed one of my "hotbuttons" - and I do not mean to make it personal against you. Please reconsider getting rid of your baby - animals do not choose to come into our homes, we choose them. When we do so we make a committment to them to care for them with love and compassion for their entire lives. Even when doing so may not be convenient! They bond to us and love us and cannot understand being bounced around to new homes.

Ultimately, the decision is yours. I just hope you really think about it before making a hasty decision.

Good luck to you, and again, I do not mean to make light of the situation with your glider.

Peace.

Airhead,
I can fully understand why you consider giving your ferret up, after all you witnessed a murder.
But understand that animal instincts are to blame, and all you can do is ensure each pets saftey.
I can understand that you may not be able to love your ferret for what has happened, but really it wasn't like your ferret did it on purpose to hurt you, it was animal instinct kicking in.
You alone can make a choice on that and i'm not condemming you either way, i just wanted to let you know that you could make it safe for both type of pets to exist in your life.
As for your boy friend, i'm sure he learned his lesson too.
Please stay and give us a chance, we are normally a very friendly place, but tensions do arise at times like anyplace where a lot of people meet.
I can assure you that you will not regret staying.

Tanja

Airhead- My eyes just flooded with tears when I read your story. I am so sorry for your loss. As for ferrets, I have never had one, but I have had many friends with them. From what I can tell, Sugar Gliders are much cleaner and less intrusive. However, you did have the ferret first, but it is obvious the two couldn't live in harmony. SO, if you think suggies are the more appropriate pet for you, please find a GOOD home for your ferrett and make sure it will be cared for. I wish you luck in whatever you deside, and I am so sorry for your loss.

It's ok Airhead...we all make mistakes. It sounds to me like you were being a responsible pet owner and an accident just happened. And that's exactly what it was an accident. Please don't be so hard on youself. We have all been in your shoes to some degree. I have left my gliders cage door open so many times when I just forgot or I was going to back and do it and forgot. I'm lucky that nothing has happened. Give yourself time to heal before making any decisions where your pets are concerned so when you do make a decison it will be one you won't regret. Hugs coming your way!!!!!

Steph

Airhead, I'm so sorry. I suffered the same type of loss several months ago with My glider Petrie and my Jack Russell Pup. I was broken hearted but I could not blame the dog since he was only doing as nature intended, just like your ferret. For awhile I questioned keeping both ( I had other gliders at the time). I relized I had made a comittment to all my animals and came up with new safeguards to keep them seperated. They are all doing fine now. The gliders have their own room and are out only when I am watching them. The dog is never allowed in the glider room and the door always stays shut. It can be done it just takes planning. Again I'm so sorry for your loss.

Airhead--
Keep the ferret, dump the careless boyfriend.

But first, bury your tiny friend in a special place. I just smooched all of my gliders in memory of your little girl (even Hotspur who hates when I do that.)

Glider Greetings,Airhead

I'm sorry for your loss. Accidents happen... don't beat yourself up over it. Learn from the mistake and move forward. I think ferrets and gliders can live successfully in the same home.....you will just have to be extra careful.I used to own a ferret) But it is your choice.....do what you think is right for you. But, take a little time to think things out before you make a final decision.

Just for the protection, of others in the DFW area, who was the person that sold you the gliders? Is he a breeder or just a private owner?

Airhead I am so sorry for what happened to your baby. Unfortunately when you have other pets it gets to be a challenge to keep them safe and secure. I have 2 frogs, 1 mountain lizard, a hamster, 3 gliders, 2 dogs, a bearded dragon, and a fish. Any animal that is a predator will kill another because its instinct. In my classroom a few years back we had a rat who was the class pet. Later in the year a parent gave us a hamster. I explained to the children how they could never be together as the rat would naturally go after the hamster. The last month of school I was absent. You guessed it.. one of the kids opened the rat cage to play with the rat, another opened the hamster cage and the rat raced to the hamster. I got the phone call from the secretary to come there fast as they could not get the dead hamster from the rat.It was awful.
Take some time to heal and please understand that your ferret did just what they do in nature. I hope that you tell that "idiot" at the swap meet that any animal could possibly attack another and he was VERY ignorant to tell you this.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about what happenned. I know how it feels.I had my gliders in a hamster balls, one cracked open the ball and my glider almost was a expensive snack, I have a retired race track greyhound, who was train to race on live animals (very illegal, I had no idea). Well one night my hamster got out, and I woke up to, watching my greyhound eating my hamster. I was so angry with her, I felt like getting rid of her. I literally hated her. Then my voice of reason boyfriend stepped in, my greyhound knows no better, for generations she has been condition to kill live meat, ferrets have the instinct to kill, they are meat eatters, your ferret was being a ferret. Love is unconditional, and we have to realize animals are human like, but not human they don't have the morals, and reasoning we do. Keep your ferret, these things happen. I was able to forgive my greyhound, and move on, u will too I promise. Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way. My lesson, keeps animals of different species separated from each other. We all make mistakes, so forgive yourself. Animals have become such a part of our lives, we believe they think like us and understand human cognitive reasoning skills. Your ferret does not understand being a pet, it saw a live food source being a carnivore. We eat meat, and we are consuming animals, we are no different. Your gliders eat mice etc...its the food chain....
