I just read something that said since gliders have a low body temp of about 89 degrees...that keep gliders safe from many North America illnesses such as rabies. The body temp keeps them from getting or spreading it.
I am wondering how true this is or if it is totally true. I know nothing about the spreading of rabies...but since St Paul is trying ban gliders all together...I have to try some research. They stated there is no rabies vaccine for gliders...which is an issue according to them...gives them good reason to fight for the ban to pass...if gliders in fact can not get rabies though...that would be great info to help fight the ban.
Anyone that knows, or can find the info...please share!

I haven't been able to find anything that would help. However, the CDC would know what temps are required for rabies to incubate-might be worth giving them a call.

Rabies is spread by contact with an infected animal, either saliva, blood or brain tissue. I would think that yes, a glider could host rabies, as the most common way it is spread is through saliva, which is in your mouth, and therefore cooler than the rest of your body. However, I'm not a doctor, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so...I could be wrong. If they force gliders to have to have rabies shots, then all mamals should have to have them, including, but not limited to: rabbits, mice, rats, chincillas, hamsters, gerbils, STO's, flying squirrels, horses, whales and dolphins and any other you can think of. That was sarcasm. However, the point of a rabies vaccine is not to protect the animals, but to protect the humans around the animals, kind of using our pets as a barrier to nature. So, if gliders aren't exposed to it, then they would be exempt. Unless they are going to add a rabies vaccine to our childrens "before you can attend school" routine. http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/qanda/general.html#a1Read why does my pet need a rabies vaccine? http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/history.htmlTransmission http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/epidemiology.htmlSee the table at the bottom of the page, most cases are transmitted to humans by Bats.

Center for Disease Control. They can also tell you how many cases of reported rabies there are in your state/area and what type of animals were found infected. Small rodents such as mice, gerbils, hamsters, squirrels, chipmunks etc RARELY get rabies. It appears that the one rodent more suseptable to rabies are woodchucks but not many people keep those as pets! Rabies are most often seen in racoons, coyotes, dogs, cats, cattle, horses. This is a small part of one article... Go to the site to read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabies#Rabies_in_the_United_States

So are we saying here...it is in fact true? gliders do not get/give rabies? Is that documented anywhere?

I've been told that rabies need a specific temp range in order to incubate in a host...above or below that temp, even if exposed, it simply dies, so the animal can't host OR transmit the disease. I have not been able to find out what the exact temp range is, though. Most animals that get it run a normal body temp between 95-104 degrees. vets have measured a glider's temp between 88 and 90.
