I posted a story about 2 mons ago and it was about my gliders eatting their (pink) baby. I was devistated.Anyway, Satine had another baby pretty much right away. I was so exicted. I Saw the tail last night and I beleive early this morning, around 1:00a.m the baby was out of Satines pouch, and in their polar fleese pouch. Dad seemed very protective never left the baby. Mom came out to eat. Everything seemed fine. This morning,8:00a.m I went to check on them and found baby on the cage floor. I strted to panic and put the baby back in fleese pouch. Checked on them every 15mins. Baby thrown out all the time. At lunch time I finally went on line and read the article about handfeeding a baby. Shot some video of the baby and went out Petsmart to buy supplies. In petsmart there was a women that seemed to know everything about glidders. convinced me the best thing to do was to buy one larger hammock so that all 3 of the glidders had room to sleep in it. She told me that their pouch was too small and that this would solve the problem. I had all the paper with me thatI printed off this site. She told me it was all wrong and people on the net don't know what their talking about! I bought all the supplies anyway, but came home and did what she said, and within 2 hours, they ate the baby. I am so angry that I didn't follow my gut instinct. I have all things here to hand feed him, and we lost him. So please don't listen to people that think they know everything, and go with what you think is right. I have learned a grat lesson, and hope you don't make the same mistake as me. Here is a little video taken at lunck time....We named him Spunky because he was a little fighter.

Words are so inadequate at times like this. Just know that there probably wasn't anything you could have done to save Spunky.

Please know that I am very sorry for your loss.

I am moving this to Real Stories for you.

I am so sorry. I watched your video of little Spunky. How hard it must be for you, but you certainly did all you could. We never really know if what we are doing is right or potentially not going to work out. I have been hand feeding a joey since she was day 2 OOP. So many times I wondered if I would be able to take care of her and have her grow up. The parents killed the twin and I had to make a fast decision. Like you said I had to just go with my instinct. I still do, in fact, and tonight for the first time she ate some fruit by hand which I felt she might now be ready for. She is now almost 7 weeks old.
Please know that you did what you could and tried to do like we all do.. listen to those who say they know whats best... what more can we do?

In memory of little Spunky may your story help others as we all face these situations.

Patti

I'm extremely sorry for the loss of your Spunky. He will be missed I'm sure. Your video was great and I am sure that It will have great memories for you. That woman should be well, I'm going to be nice. I'm sorry, just try not to blame yourself, you thought she was helping. Your story scares the poop outta me. My first pair that I purchased is pregnate and the momma still has them in pouch. I haven't seen a peep of them yet, this is her first time and I am terrified that she will lose them. I see the peanut type shapes, but no tail, no butt, no nothing. I am glad that you shared your story with us, but It seems so morbid that their own mother would do that. It makes me wanna cry! Well, I hope you don't take it all out on yourself, you thought you were helping the baby.

God Bless You!!

My heart goes out to you, that is terrible. I guess never put your child's welfare in the hands of others personal opinions, is the lesson here. I sorry and know that your glider is in my thoughts tonight.

Thank you for your kind words.I still feel terrible guilt inside me knowing I should have done something different. My 13 year old son came home at lunch and babysat Spunky for me. He called me every 2 minutes to update the situation. We had made plans that we would set the aquarium up in his room and we would take turns feeding him. Before I left for petsmart he got his video camera out and we wanted to start a little documentary on abonded joeys. He is really good at doing this kind of thing, he does all the computer stuff, not me. He is very sad now and says he hates the Bats. That what he called them. I know he will get over it I know. But we both know what to do the next time. I just eveyone to know---Never put a rejected joey back in with the parents.
Thanks again... Renee

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Just know that you did what you thought was right. If it had been the other way around and you had pulled him and then he passed, you would have felt that you had made the wrong decision also. It must have been his time to be called to the Rainbow Bridge. Your video is a wonderful tribute to him. I was in tears watching him squirming in his little blankie. You and your son are in my prayers. He will learn to forgive your babies in time.

Hugs and Prayers sent your way

It's entirely possible that even had you done all the right things you might still have lost Spunky. Elva deliberately killed her first twins (but didn't eat them.) She then raised two wonderful children who are almost as big as she is now! Wishing you all the best for next time.

Oh my gosh! That is the saddest thing! I would def. go back and tell that lady that maybe next time she gives advise she should first know what she is talking about! I feel so bad for you and your son! It totally wasn't your fault. I mean, how could you have known that she was full of it!

what diet are you giving your glider? Is she getting tons of Protein and Calcium. Nursing mothers need plenty of both.

P.S. Tell your son that the video was so cute! I feel like crying now.

Just a suggestion, instead of slamming the lady who was only trying to help, maybe direct her to this site, nicely say thanks for your help, but this is what happened, and this is what I learned about what to do next time, if she doesn't want to learn, then leave it at that, but we will do more educating of the public by being nice, and in turn save more gliders. I am so sorry about Spunky. I have been hand raising one myself since she was 2 weeks oop, and fortunately she is doing great. It was rough, it's only been the last couple days that she was really energetic and playful. But, man, she can sure chew me out! Hopefully it was only because mom was a first time mom. And hopefully in your case is was because mom was a first time mom. As has already been mentioned, increase protein and keep stress to a minimum, zero if possible.
Again, sorry your lost Spunky, I know how it would crush me if I had lost this little one. Until she is full grown I am going to be constantly checking on her!
Chey

Reneel,
I'm sooo sorry for your loss of that lil preccious joey !! Cute video, really !!!
But you can't beat yourself up over this, instead you can learn from this.

Unfortunately i doubt, that even if you tell that lady, that seemed to know it all, what happened that she would be inclined to admit that she was wrong.
I have unfortunately come across that type of people too often, and they don't hardly ever want to admit they didn't know, much less take any advice.

My rule of thumb is and has been for a long time now, trust your instincts, especially if you had your instincts confirmed over and over in different situations.

As mentioned above, protein and extra calcium is a great idea when a glider is pregnant.
Often in nature the mother will reject a baby for various reasons, of which one is lack of adequate nutrients in food, and the others being not enough food, or something wrong with baby.
In nature, animals try not to waste any unecessary energy for self preservation reasons.

You have my sincere sympathy for your loss. Don't berate yourself so. There may well have been a reason that the parents kept putting her out. Nature often does take care of it's own in it's own way. Perhaps the little one had problems that you couldn't possibly be aware of, but the parents knew and handled it. That video was just precious.

i have herd about some sugargliders eating there babys but if this has happend more than once you need to get the girl sugar glider fixed so she cant have anymore or they will have more bays and they will eat them again most of the time when you try to take the baby from them at birth and try to feed them and take care of them yourself they mostlikely will die with out the care of there real mother and separating the boy and the girl would be a really bad idea cuz they will greave themselfs todeath and then you wouldnt have any sugar gliders anymore

Aww Im so sorry about your the lil guy. I know exactly how you feel, because I just lost my first set of joeys (Zoe and Duke) a week ago. True there were things both of us could have done to help, but we don't know if it would have been successfull. I guess it just wasn't meant to be, but its okay. Spunky, Zoe, and Duke are all together in heaven now, warm, full tummies, and happy. I hope you feel better soon. Also the tap reminded me soo much of the joeys, I put them in fleece too while they were squirming around, they are so cute when they are that age.

"try to feed them and take care of them yourself they mostlikely will die with out the care of there real mother"

This is not true Kristin. I know several people that have sucessifully hand raised many joeys to breedable age.

"separating the boy and the girl would be a really bad idea cuz they will greave themselfs todeath"

Again this is not always true. Rarely when two gliders are seperated will they die. I am not saying it cannot happen it is just not as frequent as you lead on.

My female rejected her joeys because she had worms and I tried to hand raise them and medicate them but they eventually sucommed to the worms. You might want to have your female check by a vet. If the female is sick she will reject the babies.

Next time she is pregnate try putting some powdered protien mix, about 2 tablespoons in the BML.

We forgave our gliders last night. Nature does have a way of taking care of themselves. Thank god we don't follow their behaviors, I would have eatten my kids years ago.(ha ha). I feed my gliders BML. I use frozen mixed veggies everyday,as well as fresh fruit ,Yogurt(twice or 3 times a week) and lots of licky treats. Maybe protein powder would help. Thanks for all your help....

I use protoplex lite bioactive support formula. I would also like to point out I add one tsp more of the calcium suppliment to offset the increased phospherous from the mix.

It is very sad that you had to lose a joey this way. I am glad to hear that you have forgiven your gliders now, as it is just nature to them sometimes. You heart will heal with time. I know you did what you though was right & in your power.
Your video is a wonderful tribute to Spunky.
