Hi!

Wll i'll get right down to it. I am going to purchase a glider, but I need to take it to my college with me because my family can't take care of them. So I need to find colleges that will allow gliders. If at all possible, I would like to a college that specializes in acting and drama, as that is what I will be majoring in. I would also like to know what colleges allow dogs. I think there should be a college database here on GC now that I think about it.... what do you think?

Thanks in advance for the help! Happy Holidays! :bring:

P.S. (Sorry if I posted this o the wrong board, but it seemed the most appropriate)

The majority don't. You would have to check the schools code, but most will only allow a pet if it can be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium. I don't know of ANY colleges that allow dogs. There would be too much liability risk in allowing dogs. If someone was bit, the college could be sued. Your best bet would be to live off campus in an apartment or other housing.

Each college is different, but I think it's more likely for a public college to allow pets than a private one. Also, if you can get into an apartment near campus, that'd work.

To be honest, NO dorms allow animals. This is due to: 1. people may have allergies. 2. Animal escaping thus having babies thru the dorm or creating choas. 3. if they allow if for one person, they must for all. 4. responsiblity/ neglect of pet issue...

my dad's second cousin is the assistant to the dean of admissions at Penn St. The only thing you can have on campus is a fish.. you would have to live off campus. sorry..

Actualy I have read of colleges that will allow dogs. But tey have a designated area where they have to live, and the dogs can't be over 40 lbs.

No clue, but they're talking about Stephens College, a four-year women's college in Columbia, Mo., on the first page.

And "The State University of New York in Canton, Ohio, allows non-canine pets on a case-by-case basis, said Courtney Battista, director of housing at SUNY Canton."

I've never heard of schools allowing animals other than small caged animals with the exception of a few school with large animal programs, which allow students to bring their horses and such to school to work with... Usually you have to pay high boarding fees though.

So would sugar gliders meet the despription of "Small Caged Pets"?

No because most of those colleges require that the cage be an aquarium or hamster cage. Both of which are unsuitable for gliders.

It's a difficult thing to deal with actually. I had a young iguana when I lived in the dorms. I went through a whole mess to get him there (getting everyone on my floor to sign a petition saying they were ok with him, explaining his dietary and caging/cleaning needs, etc. and having a vet thoroughly explain keeping a reptile). I helped to start a very long process which ended up with UMC allowing small animals (caged) as well as cats I believe but not dogs into some of the dorms for a couple of years. I really don't know where their policy stands now, as that has been several years ago. I think part of the problem is with the students changing so often, you have to keep getting everyone's 'ok'. I think it is much easier to just tell people 'no'. But if you live off campus, you have no problems with it.

I took my first sugar glider to classes for 2 years (I got an ok from all of my professors first, which I would highly recommend, of course) and never had an issue there either. But I also lived off campus by that time, so having him in my living space wasn't a concern.

So, most likely i'll have to live off campus. But how much did that cost for all four years?

The dorms are more expensive than an apartment. On average, it costs me about 70% of what I paid for a year in the dorm. But most schools require you to live in school housing for at least the first year, if not more. I hate to say it, but you're going to have a really tough time finding a school that will let you have gliders in a dorm. Sorry I'm not more help!

Rent varies around the US. It really depends on your area, rural, urban, etc.

Also realize that many colleges require you to spend your freshman year in the dorms; at some schools this may be required for all four years.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but distance schools are also an option. I'm doing most of my Bach. of Science degree that way "at" Grand Canyon University, in addition to a few fun classes at the local community college

add that to the fact that the school needs to be a good one, and you have mission impossible 4!

On a side note, while a lot of colleges say that you have to live on campus for the first year, it's generally a loosely enforced policy...

As far as what animals specifically are allowed, it's going to vary from school to school... You are going to have to contact the schools you are interested in to find out what they allow. Also, most dorms just don't have adequate space to allow for pets frown

I have to agree with Leyna here, while most schools 'say' it's a requirement, if you are nice and upfront about why you cannot live in a dorm, most will wave the requirement (many, don't really care anyway).

1) See if you are required to live in the dorms your first year for the colleges you are interested in

2) Call the people in charge of housing for the college and ask about pet policies. DO NOT try to sneak your glider in. I remember in the dorms, people tried to have hamsters, rats, etc (those weren't even allowed where I was at), and worst of all a scorpion...all got busted and had the animals confiscated AND got kicked out of housing...not worth it

3) Depending on where you are going to, living off campus can be comparable or cheaper to dorm pricing. Just also make sure the gliders are OK by your landlord too, and get it in writing to cover your butt! It's well worth the extra hassle for the peace of mind...I also had a landlord wig out about the suggies before, it was quite the disaster, so be sure to cover all your bases.

Hope this helps thumb Schools will vary pretty widely on their policies.

I go to college and I live off campus... so I can have all the pets I want!!
Honestly living in a dorm never appealed to me at all. I like my freedom and the dorm kids have all kinds of rules and stuff they have to follow. Plus I checked into the costs of it and really it's cheaper to live off campus. Plus more privacy/freedom/etc. I mean this is like your first chance to be out on your own without parents telling you what to do and all so isn't it just that much cooler to have your own place at the same time? The only thing is you pretty much have to have a car if you live off campus but other than that it's way better in my opinion. And then the times when vacations are and you have to find somewhere to go because you can't stay in the dorm.

But the school I go to (University of New Orleans) is mainly a commuter college anyway so it's pretty typical to live off campus. And I have a reliable roommate to split my rent with. That makes it a lot easier.

Now a days, it is very common to live off campus. We don't even live in the same city as ours and I have 4 gliders and a large outside dog. Good luck!

Most universities do not allow pets in the dorms. I am a student at the University of Florida, and when I lived in the dorms (the first year) they allowed certain pets:

Small reptiles and amphibians (no snakes)
Small rodents (hamsters, are okay but no mice or rats)
Dwarf rabbits

However they did not allow cat, dogs, or exotic mammals.

Students are not required to live on campus their first year.

Your best bet is to live off campus. I've been living off campus for a couple of years now and the pet policies off of campus are a lot more relaxed.

Although it is great that you care about your animals, you should not base your college decision on what allows animals in the dorms. Find a college that suits your interests, and then live off campus to suit your pets smile.

Many universities have great bus routes from apartments and town homes to campus so really look into those options smile

I attend The University of North Texas. The only animals they allow are the ones in the school's Service Dog Training Program. People bring them to class and everything. But there are many apartments adjacent to campus that do allow pets. We also have a huge arts program. I assume that includes a good drama program. They do shows all the time but I've never read anything as to the quality of the program.

I decided to go to Texas State over A&M because of my animals. If i would have gone to A&M there is no way i would have been able to keep my cat and sugar gliders and gliders aren't the kinds of pets you can leave with someone to take care of while your gone.

Also, I know this is probably something you don't even want to consider but have you thought about holding off on getting sugar gliders until after you go to school? That way you can go to any school of your choice and when you do get gliders you can be completely focused on them... I know that studying takes up a lot of time and energy. Just a thought.

there's a college in florida called Eckerd that allows dogs but they must be under 40 pounds, you have to have owned them for 1 year and they must be friendly. that's the only one i found so far...i have been looking for a pet-friendly college as well. i know this doesn't really help out with the glider issue, but if they allow dogs, then i don't think a little glider will be a problem. i'd check them out or email them to be sure though.
