Alright...I've posted about this same situation a couple of times...but I either get ' <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />' or suggestions that have, unfortunately, not worked.
My gliders have never been biters. I have only been nipped once or twice and only in the begining. They trust me, they let me do just about anything to them. They are sweet, give me kisses and are very understanding of me being human and all *laughs*.
There's just one problem. They seem to HATE my clothes. Along with biting my armpits every chance they get, they attack my arms when I'm wearing something long-sleeved. The only place they will bite me other then my clothes is my armpits. They've never BIT me anywhere else. I've tried changing deoderants, I've tried unscented, I've even tried not wearing any at all. I've changed my soap, I've changed my laundry detergant, I've tried taking a shower before I handle them..heck I've even tried NOT taking a shower for a couple of days. I've tried wearing the same thing whenever I handle them. Nothing works.
It seems like if they catch a whiff of anything, I'm in trouble. If I dropped a crumb on myself five hours prior...if I hugged someone with perfume on in the begining of the day...anything and nothing will set them off. They start biting my sleeves, my shoulders, my back. They only bite my clothes, but if I wear and tank top to keep them from biting my clothes, they bite my armpits <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />
When they bite me, they really don't understand that they are hurting me. They are probably thinking 'hey, what's this? *bite*' not 'oh, mommy's skin is under there'. They always look surprised when I blow on them or hiss for them to stop, but nothing I do can stop them.
Last night was particularly bad. I changed my shirts so many times but they still bit at it. I actualy found myself thinking "You know what? That's it. No more for tonight. I can't take it." But I stopped myself...I forced myself to play with them even longer then normal...I endured the bites, teeth clenched to tears. They've made holes in my shirts, they've left blood blisters and open sores up and down my arms. I'm at my wits end. I'm starting to wonder if I should even have gliders. I really don't know what to do anymore. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/upset.gif" alt="" />

I really don't know what to tell ya honey - I call them love bites! Mine do it in a fashion that makes me think it's part of marking - in which case, I won't stop them. I just grit my teeth & bare it. I have holes & markes ALL OVER - the hurt, I should own stock in Band-aid & Neosporin+Pain but I love them. I've had those nights though, where they've had to be put away because I literally couldn't stannd it anymore. But I'm actually getting used to it, I think my skin is getting harder! LOL - perhaps I'm evolving!

What about wearing a sweatshirt? Can they bite through them? I hope you figure something out...maybe it's just a phase???

ooh Waker...they bite through everything...*lmao* I've worn a long sleeve shirt and a jacket over it and still gotten bit. I don't think it's a faze since they are both a bit over 3 years.

Have you tried wearing leather?

I have heard of using bitters spray that makes you taste bad. I have no idea if the ingredients in it are safe, or if it works, but several glider sites sell it. If you taste bad it would make sense that the biting would stop. It would stop me.

How long have you had these little taste testers?

Have you tried folding up a long sleeve shirt...one of your thin ones and putting it in their cage/sleeping pouch/nest box, etc...it probably won't all fit in but most will. Keep it in there for at least 3 days. Take it out and only wear it when you are socializing with your cuties. I have 1 fleece sweatshirt that I wear only when playing/socializing with my kids....I never have washed it...(I know that sounds gross, but I haven't had a problem. They will give love nibbles though!) Try it out if you haven't already....keeping my fingers crossed and hope it works! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

My youngest has started to do the same thing. I am pretty sure it is a faze with her, but I can imagine what you're going through. I agree with zenexotics if you keep something in their cage for a while maybe they will associate it with something comforting and not bite. I hope that you find a good solution. Let us know.

I've tried leaving a shrit over their cage for days before and only wearing it to handle them, but it hasn't worked. I don't want to use bitter spray because it's too much like negative enforcement to me and I don't want to teach them what's bad...only what's good. I'll try to suggestions though, thanks!

Have you thought about this....maybe they really dont like the smell of the laundry soap you use. I noticed when my babies were young, that if I held them while I was wearing freshly washed clothes, they did not like to be held close to my body. Maybe they are biting at your clothes so much because your laundry soap irritates them in some way????Just a thought.

mine do it too but i thought this was normal.. Does this not happen to everyone? Mine jump on my head and start biting it! but I just gently push them off or i wear a beanie! But if it hurts that bad then maybe you should wear something that's made of thick plastic, like some sort of raincoat or something- here's a plus- the pee will drip right off! - but then it goes onto your carpet....sooo...

I have tried changing laundry soap and washing clothes in just water. Brooklyn, your gliders are trying to groom you. That's pretty normal. I doubt my gliders can grip onto a rain coat...they'd bite right through it too..that and they wouldn't be able to smell me at all.

My glider who I started calling Vampire Harry started biting me really bad when he was about a year old. We were bonded and I was totally bewildered. One time he bit me on my booby and really hurt me. I came to the board for help and a moderator suggested a spray called Elimina that you spray on their food. I ordered it and to this day use it every day. After a couple of weeks it stopped his biting. Oh he nips occasionally because he is Harry but he doesnt hurt me any more. We are buds again. Maybe this spray could help your problem. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried to email one of the head people at a glider rescue? I am sure they have seen every type of glider behavior imaginable. Maybe they can tell you why they are doing this and what you can do to make them stop. Try one of these places and see if one of them can help you.

Well you know all my gliders... I only have one biter that comes anywhere near close to what yours are doing. But he will bite the top seem on all my shirts, the one that runs right down your shoulder... He has gotten me threw it plenty of times, but he is the only one out of all of them. I would love to hear anything you find that works as i cant break his habit either. I just have to watch him good. He will nibble on my nuckles or my elbow now and then if its in his way, but he has never drawn blood, just a quick nip... The shirt thing drives me crazy though. If he starts that, i put him away. He has figured that out to some degree. I almost think he does it when he is done with being out with me now... lol...

I wish you luck girl! The biting the armpits thing i would just die. Someone would have to lock me up because i think my reflexes would take over and i would fling the suspect off without being able to help it. YOUCH!

The bitter spray does sound like a good idea. I wouldnt push that one aside just because its a neagative reinforcement. Biting isnt something a glider should do. I think a negative reinforcement is necesary to prevent that. Seems like the most humane thing if they simply think you taste bad now vs. blowing on them or hissing.

All animals are like kids i think. If your kid came up and bit you in your armpit, i think a good time-out or grounding is in order. You just need to figure out the glider equivelant for time-outs... lol...

I hear your frustration, Oestaira! My boys bite me when I first let them out at night, too. Donner's favorite spot to bite me is on the elbow! My solution for that is to tap them on the head with my finger & say 'NO' very loudly! It only takes 1 time for me to remind them that what they're doing hurts me and that's NOT acceptable! Perhaps they don't understand what you're trying to say by hissing at them or blowing in their faces...?

Don't give up on your suggies! I know you love them & somehow you're going to find a working solution to this problem. If not mine, then get in touch with the rescuers & see what they do.

I just thought of another idea, Oestaria: Give them something to chew on when they're IN the cage! I found some sugar cane swizzle sticks in the produce dept of the grocery store: I attach one to the side of the cage with a clothespin on the OUTSIDE. I put it in AFTER they've had playtime (they get too "wired" if they get one before!) & they spend the rest of the night chewing on it. Maybe that'll satisfy their need to chew....and not use YOU for that purpose.

Have you tried taking them out one at a time. I have to take Sebastian out first and play with him for a few minutes before I can take Shorty out. If I do it in any other order they both bite me. I think it's an alfa thing. Sebastian is older and male, it's like his scent lets Shorty know it's Ok for her to come and play.
